Just seen my first advert that it's back!!!! Japan to Indonesia starting 10th April, brilliant, my absolute favourite!

Me too. I thought he explained the blow to his cricket ambitions really well and it’s maybe why he’s been a bit directionless since? For me it’s the siblings or the two friends to win.

Owen and Alfie remind me so much of some of DS1’s school friends - he was in that slightly nerdy, geeky group - and they have all developed into fantastic young men, thoughtful, in touch with their feelings etc.

Ditto

Piggywaspushed · 12/05/2024 19:57

Is anyone else watching the BAFTAs?

Celebrity RATW just won Best Factual Entertainment.

Newgirls · 13/05/2024 07:58

Well deserved. It must be so complicated to organise!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 13/05/2024 08:05

very well deserved!

OriginalFloorboards · 13/05/2024 08:25

Very well deserved. I’m really enjoying this season. I’ve just caught up on the last episode with the duck job. That was brilliant.

I see they keep extending the date for applications for season 5. It must be hard to get that much time off work for people. I wonder if once you are out at the legs if you get to stay or immediately go home. I might have asked this already. I’ve got peri brain fog!

Piggywaspushed · 13/05/2024 10:59

Yes, good point - and that really affects the demographics of participants.

True, hadn't thought of that

TokyoSushi · 13/05/2024 22:55

Yes, I think it really does affect the demographics, and why most people are broadly 'young' or 'old' - you very rarely see a couple in their 40's for example. It would be really difficult to get the time off work/somebody to look after DC for that long etc.

Indeed - the only ones I can think of that kind of fit that brief were the newish couple who lost their money a few seasons back (and fought and then split up).

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 13/05/2024 23:07

My friend and I have just applied for this year and were very grateful for the continuous deadline extensions as we took so long to get our shit together!

We can both do it as we have earned sabbaticals from work but appreciate that there will be so many applicants that it's unlikely we'll get through. Let's see!

Oooh fingers crossed for you - how exciting, even as a prospect.

Wonkypictureframe · 14/05/2024 05:42

Good luck!

Jen and Rob from series 2 were working age demographic, and Zainab and Mobeen from the last series.

Piggywaspushed · 14/05/2024 05:50

Yes, true - although as highly paid doctors , I think they could afford a sabbatical. And Zainab had taken time off to get some head space hadn't she in regards to her fertility struggles.

RefreshingCandour · 14/05/2024 07:13

It’s interesting re the age thing - we notice it when we go out in London to eg comedy clubs and pubs. Lots of twenty somethings and fifty somethings and hardly anyone 35-50.

Kids eh?!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/05/2024 07:18

you could say that about Bake off couldn't you
i remember one of the contestants saying she would have to ask for more time off work Grin when she got through another week.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/05/2024 07:22

and the sewing bee

I got the impression Sewing Bee was over a series of weekends and they go home in between although you would probably need some time off and child care.

I think that's the same with Bake-off as well, so you could in theory do full time work/childcare during the week, but you'd need to fit in a hell of a lot of practice for your two pre-prepared challenges in the evenings.

That's why the contestants so often say "I've never done this bake/sew (within the time)". I always think "well you should practice more then?" But when you think of the logistics of practising a three hour bake/sew in a family home squeezed around a job and childcare when it possibly takes the first two days to get the ingredients/fabric delivered, then it's more understandable.

TokyoSushi · 14/05/2024 09:02

I think with the UK-based ones you could probably go backwards and forwards to home to some extent, so a bit easier, but RATW is completely 'away' for such a long time. Regardless of that, I would LOVE nothing more than to do it, the only thing I think that would hold me back is that I get very, very travel sick and all those buses might just finish me off!

It's the loos for me. I could do everything else, but being reliant on long distance bus toilets is a dealbreaker.

I was going to say the same.

Riverlee · 14/05/2024 13:09

Me too.

scissy · 14/05/2024 17:33

It's something I'd love to do. However I'm aware that it's not really feasible due to:
Allergies
Medication (I'd lose a lot of space!)
I'm a dragon with lack of food/sleep

Oh well.
Saying that though, there's been contestants with medical issues who must be taking medication. I wonder if they are allowed an extra "allowance" for it, or have to fit it in their rucksacks? I've never seen that question answered.

RefreshingCandour · 14/05/2024 18:25

I find myself counting the days til the next episode 😂

I may have to rewatch seasons 1 & 2 😂
