Just seen my first advert that it's back!!!! Japan to Indonesia starting 10th April, brilliant, my absolute favourite!

Yes I assumed they have the attractions and benefits of the job in those booklets. But how do they know how to get to them without a map?

When they show the possible routes on the show I assume the participants are given those too. What is to stop them otherwise doing some other unthought of weird route?

Yes! Thank you for explaining this, they must have set routes to follow I’ve wondered about this as I’ve often thought if my daughter and I were doing this we could easily get lost and end up 2 weeks behind the others.

OutOfTheHouse · 10/05/2024 12:43

I think they are given some basic information, otherwise it would be very dull.

Im always amazed that no one gets the shits.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/05/2024 12:43

I wonder if the production team suggested it as their relationship was getting so difficult. They must have welfare people on hand or, at least operating remotely, in case of real problems including this sort of thing.

Just caught up. I really enjoyed the episode and it looks like they all get on well together. I'd love to see the pink dolphins.

The production team do investigate the possible routes beforehand to check it is possible to do (that's how they can do the "the teams could choose route a or b") - I believe they're quite broad though and the jobs mean that teams don't end up all going to the exact same places. It's not on TV but I wonder how many times a team thinks "that job looks cool" only to find another team has already secured it.

Aslockton · 10/05/2024 17:59

Stephen reminds me of quite a few old school teachers. He obviously adores Viv and is always paying her compliments and telling her how much she means to him. It is nice to see and hear a man of his age being so affectionate. I always admired my grandparents' relationship for this. My parents were more like Jack and Vera Duckworth... moaned about each other constantly, but loved each other deep down!

GrandHighPoohbah · 09/05/2024 21:26

The duck herding is hands down the best moment of the series so far!

I am bored of Eugenie and Isabel sniping at each other. I put them on mute this episode.

I loved that too. I used to do pet sitting and have to chase daft ducks around a garden into their enclosure. It's my calling. Quack.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/05/2024 18:50

we dont need so much eugene and isobel
enough now

Diddlydays · 10/05/2024 19:13

I think Viv and Steve could win it. I'm impressed with how many spas they've been in on the way too. For Eugenie and Isobel I get the impression that the mum has worked hard to give Isobel a good education, my bet would be on an all girls grammar followed by somewhere like SOAS hence the grasp of Korean , but they are portraying her to consider herself more highly than her mum at times.

I really like the honesty of Betty's brother and I think he'll come out of this with a plethora of dating requests, but my favourites are the boys. They are respectful, well rounded and looking out for each other.

How many episodes do we have left?

Newgirls · 10/05/2024 19:16

I’m not such a fan of Betty’s brother - such a lad and doesn’t seem respectful of women after his early lad trip remarks? But Betty seems great very switched on.

I haven't noticed him being disrespectful, but I think he's young. His experiences are based on being "boyz on tour " and Betty is hoping to expand his outlook. I really respected his account of not getting on to the cricket team. This may be an unpopular opinion but alot of people have an excuse with this kind of back story and he just said I wasn't good enough, I tried, I didn't make the cut...and I found that really admirable (although I wish the outcome had been different).
I also REALLY want a Thai massage and am super impressed with how well the locals speak English.

Newgirls · 10/05/2024 19:28

Yes it was the lads on tour comment. I don’t really like those types of men. And yes lots of young men think they are going to be sports stars - he’s had a wake up call. I much prefer the two other boys and I think it’s interesting that the show has chosen such contrasting young men.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/05/2024 19:59

He was very laddish at the beginning but I think he's developed a bit. I think he has more respect for his sister for a start. He expected her to be furious with him when he lost the money because I expect that's how he would have reacted. She was so calm and reasonable about it and I detect a change in him since then.

Newestname002 · 10/05/2024 20:15

I really like the two young men. At age 20 yes, they do show some rough corners, but they often show a remarkable maturity, considering each other's needs and giving each other space but still bantering and enjoying the experience as well as having an eye to the finish. Even if they don't win, and I think they stand a good chance, they will both be changed for the better at the end of this experience. 🌹

I wonder whether production have emphasised a sort of “lads lads lads” vs “seasoned cultural traveller” thing with the siblings? Because tbf, we’ve not actually seen anything disrespectful from the brother - I’m thinking especially of the couple of home stays that they’ve done

That's my impression of Isobel and Eugenie as well. Her daughter has a more middle class accent and I wonder if she sees herself more sophisticated than her mum. Could be way off, of course. I wonder if her mum has made quite a lot of sacrifices for her daughter's education but feels Isobel isn't grateful/appreciative of that.

Newgirls · 10/05/2024 21:33

Yes Betty’s brother (can’t remember his name!) will get a lot from this and has been fine with the people he’s met. Betty seems great right away and seems to be helping him grow up.

RefreshingCandour · 10/05/2024 22:13

I think Owen and Alfie are exceptionally mature for their ages and don’t think comparisons with James are fair. He’s only 21! I think he’s coming across really well, and maturing fast and learning lots. Really nice bond he’s developing with his sister. 🥰

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 11/05/2024 02:38

Betty and James are my favourites. Eugenie is coming across as sulky and spoiled but I think with no sleep I’d be the same.

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 11/05/2024 02:40

I also wonder what on earth possessed Eugenie to apply for the show, from the beginning she’s come across as someone who wouldn’t enjoy it, and wouldn’t enjoy spending time with Isabel. I just can’t imagine them chatting at home, and putting in an application.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 11/05/2024 07:40

Owen and Alfie remind me so much of some of DS1’s school friends - he was in that slightly nerdy, geeky group - and they have all developed into fantastic young men, thoughtful, in touch with their feelings etc.

Riverlee · 11/05/2024 09:32

@Diddlydays I agree, Steve and Viv could win it. They’re being most frugal with money, so will probably have the largest budget at the end which could be beneficial. As they’ve said at the beginning, they haven’t got the physical speed, so have to think smart.

I actually quite like Viv, and Steve, despite all his faults, I’m warming too. They seem to be very supportive of each other.

Lollybridge · 11/05/2024 19:18

It was quite funny how James was keen to see the Thai boxing and enjoyed that whilst Betty seemed horrified then Betty took her brother off to see some culture. He didn't moan about it though. I do think he's a lad and used to the 18-30 scene in Ibiza, for example (that's probably old hat now!) and this sort of travel with is big sis is opening his eyes a bit.
