Just seen my first advert that it's back!!!! Japan to Indonesia starting 10th April, brilliant, my absolute favourite!

OP posts:
Higglings · 09/05/2024 08:28

Loved seeing Thailand, have been there and seen a small area, but would love to go back.

Eugiene was in awe of her daughter’s abilities in the first episode. So now it would help if she could make a big effort and give her praise instead of the looks and comments which her daughter has probably learnt from her and possibly holds her back now. Lack of regular decent sleep may be showing with Eugiene but somehow not affecting the others. Viv seems so chilled! Her comment that Stephen won’t say how she’s changed was maybe not how she meant it but to me it sounded the alarm bells because it made it sound like he knew stuff he was holding back which good or bad I’d be very frustrated by.

I would be an absolute wreck with no sleep or regular food - at any age.

Uncooperativefingers · 09/05/2024 09:04

I am really enjoying this series, but I am struggling to like many of the pairs.

I find the boys so incredibly annoying and juvenile. Actually it's just the dark haired one. Any little set back and he throws a tantrum and leaves it for his blond friend to fix. Last night he was insisting that waiting an extra day for the direct bus was the best plan then complaining about it all the way through the next day.

Isobel and Eugene are also getting on my nerves sniping at each other, but Stephen was much better.

I do like the siblings, probably because he reminds me of my brother. They seem to be getting into their stride slot more and are working well together. They strike a good balance between racing and experiencing

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/05/2024 09:11

@Uncooperativefingers I'm similar. I don't feel any affinity at all to any of the pairs. I find them all annoying in different ways, and in varying levels. From the first episode, DD was team Boys, whereas I'm Meh. If I had to choose someone I'd like to win, I'd probably go for the brother / sister although I don't even know why.

Oldmansissnoring · 09/05/2024 10:47

captainmycaptain absolutely! It makes me wonder how the others are managing throughout this race. There must be something helping them along not just when they reach the lovely air conditioned hotel bedroom and stock up on full meals and drinks and fresh laundry at the checkpoints.

Do we know how old Isobel's brothers are? I'm wondering if Eugenie had them when she was younger, then there was a significant age gap before having Isobel? Might explain the different relationship with the brothers which has been alluded to.

I think they’re older, but not sure by how much.

EverybodyLTB · 09/05/2024 14:06

I liked Isobel so much at the beginning, but now I just feel like her criticism of Eugenie is becoming ridiculous when she herself isn’t communicating well. She’s got no business moaning about her mum’s poor communication when every time she’s asked to be clear, she clams up. They’ve clearly got deep rooted issues and I do sympathise, but you really can’t criticize someone and then do the exact same thing on repeat. Isobel has lots of skills, and pretty much feel that her mum isn’t massively acknowledging that (or didn’t before the trip) you can feel the hurt coming off Isobel in waves, but again, communicating it terribly.

Stephen and Viv, meh! The stroke story was upsetting, you feel for Viv obviously it was awful, but S response to it was I don’t know, an oddness to it.

Betty and James are alright. They’ve been kind and fair to one another for the most part, I’d be proud of them if they were my kids. A bit uneventful, I guess, not much jeopardy or substance.

The boys I’ve warmed to, but then they’re going back into the slightly hysterical mode of getting upset about where they are in the race. Fucksake they’re enjoying themselves and not at all far behind, they’re too uptight for me it’s annoying. I feel so irritated when people aren’t throwing themselves into it as an experience, when the amount of money they’d win isn't the most life changing amount, and there’s no elimination. Enjoy it whilst racing. Wherever you are in the race, you’ve gone as quick as you can and enjoyed yourself along the way, what’s the point of getting all moody?

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/05/2024 15:49

I think after a few weeks of travelling often without a night's sleep for several days at a time anybody would be feeling moody and snappish from time to time. These are probably the bits they show to add tension.

shearwater2 · 09/05/2024 16:19

I haven't taken to Eugenie. When she had that face on with the neck pillow yesterday that just summed her up for me.

Lovemycat2023 · 09/05/2024 20:29

I do think these teams are doing really well with the overnight transport on trains and buses. Do you remember when the night in one of the Montreal cost loads of money because of the GP? No one has been completely screwed up by anything like that yet, although James and Betty don’t seem to have much left? Stephen and Viv did really well to hitch part of the journey but I couldn’t have coped with no sleep sitting up on a train for two nights.

GrandHighPoohbah · 09/05/2024 21:26

The duck herding is hands down the best moment of the series so far!

I am bored of Eugenie and Isabel sniping at each other. I put them on mute this episode.

Wonkypictureframe · 09/05/2024 22:08

I laughed so hard at Isobel’s ‘she really very old’ comment. It’s so much the perspective of youth.

Stephen continued to annoy me I’m afraid. The stressing about being first off that boat (I realise the boys didn’t help that) but it really really doesn’t matter. The only way off that island will be another boat and they were minutes apart. And the third class carriage. DH told me he knew I’d divorce him if he forced me to sit without AC for 13 hours overnight for the sake of what was probably less than a tenner.

True! But I wonder if Stephen and Viv's frugality will pay off towards the end so that they have the money to race to the finish. I'm not sure how some of the other teams will manage without upping the amount of work as most are on around 35% (apart from the siblings who are even lower!) and they've still got 3(?) legs to go at least.

I wonder if the siblings will have to drop out due to lack of funds. There's usually a team who doesn't make it to the end for that reason.

SoupDragon · 10/05/2024 07:25

That was the first time I thought he was just messing about and it was banter between teams.

awaynboilyurheid · 10/05/2024 07:43

It was nice Viv greeted the boys so warmly when they met up, after all they are just young lads. Think the ending was to show maturity ( unlike Stephen I’m not saying old) can beat youthfulness. The boys should have went for it themselves instead of their plan to just follow Stephen and Viv then at the last minute out run them!
I can’t warm to the sister and brother really they seem nice but that’s it, same for Eugenie and Isobel.
I wondering if Eugenie was going to leave so they had to go to relax by the falls she seems miserable a lot if the time, wish she would openly praise her daughter it might help reduce the tension.
Agree with the poster that said you can feel the hurt coming off Isobel .

pootleq5 · 10/05/2024 07:53

Isabel strikes me as very happy to dole it out but not so happy to take it. That said she clearly was scared of the fish and her mother Seemed quite cruel in her mockery . Of course it’s all in the editing .

I like the boys , I like the fact that despite their differences they are unfailingly supportive of each other . One clearly hates clubbing but he was happy to work there for his friend and the other was really supportive in Hoi An leaving his friend to light a lantern for his mum. They also had obviously decided to have a great time in Thailand regardless of time and that was lovely to see.

I’d like to see the siblings finish I hope they do . They really seem to have a great relationship . I might just kill Stephen , his miming of a race with his arms is so annoying .

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/05/2024 07:55

They should rename this programme "The Eugenie and Isobel bickering show" <grumble>. The side trip to the waterfalls set piece - how would they even have known they existed as they supposedly don't have a map 🤔.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/05/2024 07:56

I might just kill Stephen , his miming of a race with his arms is so annoying . I think this is what annoys me most. As if anyone else is going to care that he's in a race anyway.

That’s a really good point…..

equally, Isobel could stop sniping at her mother and looking sulky. She's very patronising.

If that isn't how their real relationship is, the editing team have been really nasty to them! They are the only ones not coming across as a team.

Wonkypictureframe · 10/05/2024 08:24

Stephen’s banter with the boys was good natured but he was deeply tedious before that.

I assume they knew in the same way both mapless teams are navigating successfully.

also, they have the "book of jobs" so maybe there's a book of attractions too.

Yes I assumed they have the attractions and benefits of the job in those booklets. But how do they know how to get to them without a map?

When they show the possible routes on the show I assume the participants are given those too. What is to stop them otherwise doing some other unthought of weird route?

SoupDragon · 10/05/2024 09:03

The same way they know where anything is I guess. Either they are told or they ask someone.

The loss of the maps has thrown up several questions and makes me doubt certain aspect of the programme. Someone has to be telling them all the routes they can take rather than just leaving it up to the teams to decide (map or no map)

also, I still don't understand why they haven't bought another one or got one from a touristy place. Or taken a photo of a map from someone (competitor or local person with a phone)
