Just seen my first advert that it's back!!!! Japan to Indonesia starting 10th April, brilliant, my absolute favourite!

The thing that floored me this episode was Alfie talking about what a fantastic job Owen’s parents had done. From a lad who didn’t have parents growing up. What fabulous young men they both are.

Can you imagine Owen's parents watching that episode? I'd be in absolute bits.

Momstermunch · 02/05/2024 22:12

I'm surprised at the negative posts about Eugenie. I don't think Isobel comes across well at all. She absolutely gives the impression that her mum irritates her. She's rude to her and doesn't seem interested in hearing her opinions at all. I'm actually not convinced that this is the right way to fix a tricky relationship though. Like a previous poster said, even a really good relationship could become strained under the conditions they're in.

I thought it was lovely the way he talked about Alfie looking after him and taking his mind off things. I always thought they were a bit of an odd friendship pair before but they’ve been through a lot together and it makes sense now.

Yes he is really mature beyond his years in many ways, the experience of what he went through means he looks at others parenting and it was such a lovely thing he said about Owen getting through because of his good parents, I would imagine they have taken Alfie under their wing too, bless him.

Oldmansissnoring · 03/05/2024 12:02

Totally agree about Alfie and Owen. True friendships like theirs are to be cherished. Stephen yep still totally agree with posters comments, though I wonder from the clips for next week if they are going to start showing a better side of him. Betty is coming across very well and hopefully having a good influence on James who could do with a mature influence now (can’t forget his remarks, lads holidays and leg over, in the first episode - apologies now if I have that wrong). Glad they are still in the race after the passport panic. Eugiene and Isabel - difficult one as we only see dramatic edits. Just hope they don’t watch this back with regrets about the editing and how they come across especially in the one to one snippets or when we see Eugiene roll her eyes, otherwise they could be in a worse state than when they started.

Who knew after ep 1 that I would be rooting for the boys by ep3? So young, yet so mature in other ways. They are a really good representation of young men today with their loyalty, empathy and support for each other.

I feel something severely dysfunctional has gone on in Isobel’s childhood. I’d love to know more about the dad, the brothers and what the timeline was there. But she needs to speak up rather than be snide and Eugenie needs to listen and perhaps explain her point of view more.

Can you tell I’m totally invested?

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 03/05/2024 20:02

Had the boys always planned to go rafting? It seemed one minute they were in the middle of nowhere and it was all a disaster then they were rafting.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/05/2024 20:23

i thought they were going rafting but then seemed to rule that out, and next minute they were rafting!

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/05/2024 20:26

Didn't they miss their transport and it was hours for the next bus so used the time to go rafting then got a taxi. Something like that.

SoupDragon · 03/05/2024 20:57

No, they always planned to go rafting. They messed up the timing of the bus to the rafting (or something before the rafting - getting out of the national park maybe?) but did it anyway. I think they said they'd get there for the "last raft" but this meant they were stuck there.

I do kind of love that they both went "I'd rather lose the race because of doing this than miss the chance to do this". It felt like such a shift from where Alfie was in Japan. Alfie so annoyed me in the first episode but the different sides of each of them we're seeing now and the generosity and love in their friendship is just brilliant. I'm watching it with my two boys and am loving them seeing such a positive representation of male friendship.

GrandHighPoohbah · 04/05/2024 08:32

I found the Eugenie/Isabel negativity rather wearing in this episode. There's clearly a backstory and I wonder if we will get to know it or not. At this point we probably need it, or they should stop showing all the bad vibes.

Alfie and Owen are my faves, and I think Betty and James really stepped up this episode. Even Stephen wasn't as awful as he has been!

periodiclabel · 04/05/2024 12:18

I feel Betty and James have somehow gone under the radar – they seem like a nice pair and I’m quietly rooting for them. Interesting how the Alfie Owen narrative completely turned around once we got the backstory, I wonder if it will be the same with Eugenia and Isabel

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/05/2024 12:48

yes, betty has travel experience and she treated james sympathetically

Apolloneuro · 04/05/2024 21:05

NCTDN · 02/05/2024 21:44

I really hope the boys catch up. I think I've taken in the motherly role in wanting them to win !

Oh me too. What an absolutely wonderful pair of lads. I want to adopt Alfie and mother him to within an inch of his life.

Apolloneuro · 04/05/2024 21:12

Stephen and Viv - bleurgh. Gives us boomers a bad name! Horrible.

CrushingOnRubies · 04/05/2024 23:07

There is such a back story between Isabella and Eugenie

Sometimes I imagine what mumsnet threads tv people would start and I think there's would be the most shall we say

The two lads grew on me this week

Newgirls · 05/05/2024 08:30

Got to hand it to Stephen and viv in that they are doing very well and not complaining. They are the type you expect to see in a bar in a dodgy resort but they are actually resourceful and adventurous

OutOfTheHouse · 05/05/2024 08:45

I did think the racing at the end was a bit silly as it won’t make a scrap of difference.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/05/2024 08:48

yes but you want to be the first names on the page

Newgirls · 05/05/2024 08:51

I think the first on the page should get a cash prize or something else it seems slightly irrelevant?

SoupDragon · 05/05/2024 08:54

I imagine they're told to do it for the "excitement" value and teasing of who's first.

OutOfTheHouse · 05/05/2024 09:15

I understand why they were doing it but I felt for Val being patronised by Stephen and Eugene being pushed on by Isobel.

RefreshingCandour · 05/05/2024 09:42

As irritating as Stephen is, there is something satisfying about the older ones doing well in RATW! I adored S1.

Thing is, a lot of it isn’t about physical prowess - yes you need a decent level of fitness for it, but more is about smarts and planning.

And luck 😂

Well that was what was disappointing about the series in Canada. I understand why they had to do it like that due to covid restrictions crossing borders but a lot of the check points had one or two trains per week so if you didn't get on that train you were snookered. One team were over 24 hours ahead at the first checkpoint but the one train to their second checkpoint was three/four days later so they lost any advantage not due to strategy just train time tables.

Consequently there were several times where all the teams were getting off the same train and literally having to make dash for the checkpoint so it literally was the fittest, and generally youngest, who benefitted.

This series is much more interesting as there are many different routes to get to the end.
