Do you remember that awful dad in the last series? Where the daughter grew up alone above a pub. She was also a bit annoying but he was godawful

I went right off Isabel tonight. That "did you, though"? when Eugenie said she had tried (about something in their past) was very cutting and Eugenie seemed extremely hurt by it.

Stopsnowing · 02/05/2024 04:52

There was one father son pair in the first series where they had had a distant relationship but at the end grew close and since then it seems the producers have been trying to replicate it but it makes for boring and uncomfortable viewing. We watch this for a bit of escapism not to watch people bicker.
isobel started off positive - I would like us to eat more meals together. Her Mum says they used to and she tried and then Isobel blames her. No point.

I have a great relationship with my children.

no way would we survive this level of intensity though! They're together 24/7 under stressful conditions. Horrendous!

exactly what i said,
they wouldnt show the best of me either , i would be knackered and all that time together would be exhausting - they seemed to be as bad as each other and not good telly for me

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/05/2024 05:45

i cnat believe the boys still went white water rafting, i was sure they were going to go straight to check point then!

I agree and we don't know the back story . Eugenie isn't living up to Isobelle's idealised view of her .

RefreshingCandour · 02/05/2024 06:44

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 01/05/2024 22:26

It is upsetting as Eugenie very obviously doesn't like her daughter and I suspect Isobel has been trying for a long time to get her mums approval but never found it.

And Eugenie is so defensive, she absolutely refuses to accept any of the issues could be anything to do with her.

I feel sorry for Isobel tbh.

I don’t read this like that. I see Eugenie biting her lip - I suspect there is a lot she has been through with Isobel that she doesn’t want to be seen on camera, and is very protective of her.

Yes, they are different people. That doesn’t prevent a deep relationship. Remember Eugenie is a teacher, I think there is likely way more to this than what we are seeing.

Im sure there is a back story to their difficult relationship, I think Isobel is snippy to her mum because she is angry about something, they reference that they dint seem to know each other well , I’m wondering if Eugenia was an absent mum somehow? Or just maybe there physically but not interested in Isobel? Time will tell but I think Eugenia has to accept her daughter is hurt somewhere along the line.
Good to see the boys having fun even if it did make Alfie’s head spin that they weren’t in race mode! I don’t think he could believe they were rafting instead of racing but they needed to have some fun times.
Steven and wife must have been told to get a move on and helped by the production team this week, I’m sure if I did it I could be weeks or months behind! Everyone would write June in the book I’d be writing December.

CaptainMyCaptain · 02/05/2024 08:17

I'm guessing Eugenie was a single Mum working long hours as a teacher with no time for family meals. Just guesswork and they might not want to talk about it on air.

awaynboilyurheid · 02/05/2024 08:21

Captain agree could be something like that , there is resentment there for sure from Isobel, we may find out. Nice to see them laughing hope this journey helps them both.

SoupDragon · 02/05/2024 08:28

And the parents need to take responsibility, acknowledge the role they've played, if the relationship is difficult. It sure won't ever be repaired otherwise

I think Isobel has a part to play here too.

From what little we've been shown on screen, there are faults on both sides. On the to-camera inserts, Eugenie has praised her daughter alongside the criticisms of certain aspects. Had Isobel's done the same? I can't remember.

i think there's a middle ground here.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 02/05/2024 10:11

Agree that seeing Eugenie and Isobel's bickering is very sad. Eugenie saying she felt like a punch bag. Definitely a weird dynamic.

Like a pp, I also loved seeing Chiang Mai as I've been there too. Next week I've noticed they are in Koh Phi Phi which is a very special place to me, so I'm looking forward to that.

GeorgeCrabtreesAuntBegonia · 02/05/2024 10:17

SoupDragon · 01/05/2024 22:37

i thought Eugenie said they'd eaten together when the kids were growing up. I think it's accurate to say that it's hard when everyone is doing different things. Isobel refused to listen.

its very difficult to eat as a family once older kids all have lives and things to do.

There are lots of things Isobel doesn't want to listen to and dismisses her mother.

Edited

I also don’t like the way Isobel smirks when her mother is clearly uncomfortable.
Eugenie is getting a bad press but it is not all one sided. This is just an unhealthy relationship.

summerbreeze31 · 02/05/2024 11:57

How did the brother and sister carry on travelling through Cambodia if they lost all their Cambodian currency?

How did the brother and sister carry on travelling through Cambodia if they lost all their Cambodian currency?

Presumably they just changed some more money - they don't have a fixed allocation for each country

They had other currency on them, presumably USD, as Betty had already negotiated a $2 fare for the tuk tuk.

Apparently you can often get a better price when paying in riel.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/05/2024 17:51

i think Betty had some money too, sensible to divide it

scissy · 02/05/2024 20:33

Just caught up. A lot of drama this episode(!)

I don't think the boys will actually be that affected in the end. Thing is, the 3 teams all arrived in the middle of the day so they'll ask have to check out around midnight to very early morning. Probably not great for finding onward transport. Depending when the boys arrive (assuming they make it that day/ early hours), they might not lose a lot of time on the next leg just because they have a better start time.

Newgirls · 02/05/2024 20:57

I wish the episode had been longer - such interesting places.

Isobel seems serious and controlling which does seem to help them in the race but doesn’t go with eugenies personality. I find myself feeling sympathetic to Eugenie. I wonder if Isobel is more like her dad or something. Glad to see them laughing and bonding more

I really hope the boys catch up. I think I've taken in the motherly role in wanting them to win !

OriginalFloorboards · 02/05/2024 21:50

I don’t know who I want to win at this point but I know I don’t want Stephen to win. Or Steven. However it is spelled.

RefreshingCandour · 02/05/2024 22:04

The thing that floored me this episode was Alfie talking about what a fantastic job Owen’s parents had done. From a lad who didn’t have parents growing up. What fabulous young men they both are.
