Just seen my first advert that it's back!!!! Japan to Indonesia starting 10th April, brilliant, my absolute favourite!

As irritating as Stephen is, there is something satisfying about the older ones doing well in RATW! I adored S1.

Thing is, a lot of it isn’t about physical prowess - yes you need a decent level of fitness for it, but more is about smarts and planning.

And luck 😂

S1's winners were spectacularly annoying! I was very much rooting against them!

They were SO irritating. Honestly couldn't stand them.

I'm just watching Series 1 and have only got to Baku. I realise who you mean but think they are OK so far. The sulky boy is doing my head in - so rude to the Turkish art dealer who employed him.

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/05/2024 16:32

Just caught up and place marking. I agree that we had too much of Eugenie and Isobel in episode 4 and their bickering is really getting tedious. Either give us the back story or stop with the repetitive snippets.

I'm a bit worried for the boys now being so far behind. I've been rooting for them from the start. I love 20 year old lads (I have one of my own) and his relationship with his best friend, which started in secondary school, is amazingly close and caring. DS is away at Uni now but is coming home for a few days tonight and will probably spend more time with his best mate than us! I hope A and O eventually win!

I'm glad the Khmer Rouge and the genocide in Cambodia was mentioned, albeit briefly. I thought Viv and Steven seemed a bit ignorant about the whole thing? - when it actually happened in their lifetimes and was widely covered on the news.

Wonkypictureframe · 05/05/2024 16:42

We were surprised at that. We’re ten years younger and still remember people getting called Pol Pot as an insult for example. It was major news in the 70s.

I really liked them too. What did you find irritating about them?

BoredAuditor · 05/05/2024 19:06

Found Stephen far less annoying this week.

Want the boys to win - which I didn't think I'd say after the first episode

Everything!

The constant banging on about being from Yorkshire for a start. I just found them grating.

But we can't all like the same people! 🤷‍♀️

Although I want the boys to win, I think this is a bit of a fault in the format really. As in it shouldn't be possible to catch up so many hours just because of a difference in the availability of public transport.

I have friends who have applied for the next series. I will be beyond excited if they get on!!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/05/2024 00:15

I've just caught up.

One thing that made me think was Brydie saying because she's very dyslexic she can't do an office job, and even things like waitressing she struggles to write orders. She liked the fishing because she could just do it. You would think that things now should be much better with adaptations and technology, but it doesn't seem to have helped her. And I guess jobs that traditionally wouldn't have required much reading and writing now do. She's so intelligent and personable I really hope she can find something that suits her.

I can't understand why Betty and James don't know each other better. They're close enough in age they should have had a lot of shared time at home, but perhaps they didn't grow up together?

Just wondering, when the boys got a chap to book bus tickets online for them in Japan, and Stephen got a chap on the bus to Hanoi 'Help me' to book onwards tickets online for him and Viv, how did they get the tickets? The chap on the bus would not have access to a printer and Stephen and Viv did not have a phone, so where is their ticket or proof of purchase to get on the next bus?

martinisforeveryone · 06/05/2024 08:45

I’d imagine they prove they could get a ticket that way and then a crew member actually buys their real tickets?

scissy · 06/05/2024 08:49

Or they just needed someone to make the booking ahead of time before the bus was full, and then could "collect" the tickets on arrival at the bus station?
They were booked in their names, so should be able to pick up with ID.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 06/05/2024 09:00

Perhaps it was like you can do for train tickets here where you can get a reservation code and then print them at the station. They could write down a code easily enough.

Momstermunch · 02/05/2024 22:12

I'm surprised at the negative posts about Eugenie. I don't think Isobel comes across well at all. She absolutely gives the impression that her mum irritates her. She's rude to her and doesn't seem interested in hearing her opinions at all. I'm actually not convinced that this is the right way to fix a tricky relationship though. Like a previous poster said, even a really good relationship could become strained under the conditions they're in.

I feel exactly the same. It’s funny how people see people differently. I find Isobel really disrespectful to her mother and really critical. I quite like Eugenie.

purpleme12 · 06/05/2024 16:15

I am honestly not sure who's to blame Eugenie and Isabel or whether it's equal both sides. I can only assume that stuff has happened in the past. Who knows who's right and wrong.

SoupDragon · 06/05/2024 16:27

They've done a superb job with the editing to make both of them seem to be the "difficult" one at different times!

deltablue · 06/05/2024 18:18

Definitely watching that. Placemarking!

I was quite shocked by Viv and Steven re Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge. I'm a bit younger than them and I knew all about the genocide. I can sort of forgive their ignorance but then thought they were totally insensitive questioning that clearly emotional man about it. 'Ooo did they kill children as well?' Said Viv. Why on Earth would you say that to someone. I was embarrassed by their insensitivity on their behalf.

Slinkycat22 · 06/05/2024 22:50

I was so excited when I saw this series advertised, but i've been disappointed with it so far. There are so many amazing, places they could've already visited on their route but none of them seem to have taken advantage of where they are! All we seem to see is them getting comfortable on buses...
Agree with the posters who were surprised about them not knowing about Pol Pot too!
How can they miss Angkor Wat and the Cu Chi tunnels in Vietnam?
I hope they start to explore these beautiful countries more...

I wonder if they were asked to ask some of the questions to allow the conversation about it. If the conversation had been ‘this is the cave where a load of people were killed,’ and they then said ‘yes, that was shocking’ some people would have been wondering what it was about.
