Just seen my first advert that it's back!!!! Japan to Indonesia starting 10th April, brilliant, my absolute favourite!

Note to producers: a little bit of back story or tension or character development is fine. The one where the man and so become close and the youngster matured was lovely but you can’t bottle it or replicate it and couples where there are obviously deep rooted issues makes for frankly dull and irritating viewing.

Thanks for whoever mentioned the stuff about it on the Rest is Entertainment podcast - v interesting. How the team check out the routes ahead of time and suss out the jobs etc. What a job! I’d’ve loved that job, back in the day. I wonder how they pick contestants? I know they like a back story but wonder what else is involved?

I definitely think they should do at least 2 episodes per checkpoint - there is so much that must be edited out. I found the last ep a bit disappointing in terms of seeing the countries as it was just race race race and subsequently a bit disappointing. I did love James and Betty staying the night with that lovely family in the downpour. More of that!

I think two episodes per checkpoint would be too much

Me too! In fact, I'd love that job now. I'd prefer it to being in the actual competition.

Do you know what date the RATW podcast was aired?

I love the boys. They seem to be trying really hard to be supportive of each other even if it’s not the way they’d choose to work individually.

Really warmed to these boys early on, they seem a good balance to each other, I like their personalities and how they work together, I hope it continues positively for them.

I rooted for the two ladies last year so I like watching good friends take on the world. 👏Great show.

If you mean The Rest Is Entertainment pod when they spoke about RATW logistics, it was 18 April.

Yes that's the one thanks I'll hunt it down. Couldn't see it for some reason when I looked through myself.

Samcro · 27/04/2024 18:04

Just caught up.
steven is obnoxious and his wife is not much better. Was really hoping they would E eliminated.
why the silly mum and daughter decided to work rather than get to the checkpoint was beyond daft.
not keen on all the back stories. It’s a race not BGT

Zwellers · 27/04/2024 18:56

I think some posters are missing the point the show is a race not a travel programme. Personally I am not interested in people's backstorys, it makes no difference to the race.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/04/2024 19:22

I think we're getting to the crux of the dilemma here.

Is this a race?
Or a travel show?
Or a documentation of development in personal relationships?

Because you could just show the race with the cities/countryside and everything they race through being a non-consequential back-drop. No stopping to work or sight-see.

But that would be a bit dull because it would literally just be trains and buses.

But as viewers we want to see these far away countries too.

I don't know, I think they (the producers) have a lot to take into consideration. Being #kind.

RefreshingCandour · 27/04/2024 19:24

Lol
I do get that it’s a race 😂

BUT

usually there’s a hiccup or a scheduling issue or exhaustion that means they aren’t just doing one 36 hour train journey!

purpleme12 · 27/04/2024 19:25

Well it's never been a 'travel show.'
Obviously it's got elements of that but never purported to be a 'travel show.'
It's always been a race that's naturally had personal relationships involved in it.
That's what the programme has been and is

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/04/2024 19:48

Man Hunt (I don't know if it's still going) is a great show for the adrenaline rush above the surroundings.

Quite. There are other types of travel show - the Michael Palin ones, Travel Man even Michael Portillo on trains and many more. RATW is what it is.

scissy · 27/04/2024 21:44

Whilst it is a race, various podcasts (including ones with previous contestants) have made it clear that there are race rules which are not explicitly explained on the show. I believe these include:
Working at least once each leg
"Sightseeing" at least once each leg

Apparently for one series there was a rule they had to use 5 modes of transport! Not sure if that is still there 😃
But that probably explains the random "stop at the nightmarket", that was their work stop for this leg.

So while it's still a "race", you're seeing how different teams have planned it out which is interesting in itself.

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 27/04/2024 22:01

This is the first series where I’ve actually properly disliked a contestant (Stephen), and it’s really affecting my enjoyment of the show as a whole. There’s enough ‘in it’ with the challenges of the race, I don’t need personality on top.

awaynboilyurheid · 28/04/2024 09:58

I properly disliked moany Jen and her put upon husband in an earlier season but it didn’t affect my enjoyment as long as she didn’t win! 🤣Made for a good ( screaming) final in our house as she narrowly missed out!

PuzzlingRecluse · 28/04/2024 15:59

Hi sorry to gate crash the thread, I’ve done a search but can’t find anything can anyone tell me if this is suitable for a 7 year old? Looking for something to watch together. Thanks!

SoupDragon · 28/04/2024 16:02

There is occasional bad language but I wouldn't have thought it unsuitable.

The penis park episode might be an eye opener though - maybe avoid that one!

There’s nothing inappropriate in it, any bad language will be bleeped out, but my kids are a bit older and it’s not something they would enjoy. Worth a try tho.

PuzzlingRecluse · 28/04/2024 16:15

Thank you!

slimmingworldnewbie · 28/04/2024 16:27

This is my first time watching RATW. I am really enjoying it! However as lots of people have already pointed out, it’s really quite obvious that it just be fairly staged in certain areas. Still, it’s good to watch.

And to whoever was wondering when it was filmed: I googled when the 2023 Myeongdong Beer Festival took place in Seoul which Betty and James went to in episode 2 I think. It was between October 6th-8th, so filming was definitely from September - November last year.

It is repeated today at 6pm on BBC 2, well before the water-shed.
