Just seen my first advert that it's back!!!! Japan to Indonesia starting 10th April, brilliant, my absolute favourite!

Fair enough re food I clearly wasn’t paying enough attention
hope the crew are able to feed themselves properly

NCTDN · 25/04/2024 22:19

I still get confused over the film crew. If they have two each plus's medic and ask someone for a lift, the average car is too small? Or does the crew have their own car that filled them when they can't fit in?

Maybe I haven’t been paying enough attention but I assumed they had to feed themselves out of the budget but we never see them handing over money for food or that affecting the budget, do we

i totally don’t get the whole map thing either, just buy one ffs. Although it would eat into the budget.

it must be a total logistical nightmare to film as each group has an entourage or at least 3 I think. And there obv has to be space for them and their equipment on the buses etc too. No joke. Hopefully the crews have their own budgets for food and the occasional hotel.

According to The Rest Is Entertainment, (ie Richard Osman, who knows everything) they have a team of two camera people/minders travelling with them at all time, and a security/medical crew some way behind and out of eyeshot in a car/van.

If there's not enough space for both their minders on a coach/in a car they're getting a lift in then one of the camera operators can drop back and get a lift with the backup car, but they do have to have one minder/camera with them at all times when they're moving. Presumably the minders get to stay in proper hotels where possible, and have an unlimited food budget, but if the team get on a 48 hour slow train the length of the country then they'll have to be on there too.

What I didn't realise is that one of the minder's jobs is to take notes of what scenery along the route looks particularly pretty, so a proper camera/drone crew can come along later and do all the sweeping vistas: so we're seeing what the teams saw, but not necessarily when they saw it. Obvious in retrospect.

purpleme12 · 26/04/2024 12:04

I've just watched this and why couldn't they go through China?!??
Presumably they had planned to go through China because otherwise they wouldn't have got that notification so why couldn't they do it?!
I'm so confused and I just want to know why!

SoupDragon · 26/04/2024 12:11

Following Wednesday's episode, Race Across The World bosses have revealed the reason as to why China had been left out of the route.

A Race Across The World spokesperson told Yahoo: "At the time of planning the route, due to time constraints and difficulties in travel in the aftermath of the global pandemic, it was not possible for production to travel through China and so a flight was organised from Seoul to Hanoi."
^^
While filming in China wasn't possible this time, it's a destination that will still be considered for future Race Across The World series.

purpleme12 · 26/04/2024 12:35

Difficulties in travel from the pandemic?

From that quote it sounded like they knew about it when they planning and yet in the programme it came across like they were expecting to go to China that had surprise notification.

SoupDragon · 26/04/2024 12:41

It looks like China only dropped testing requirements for travellers at the end of August last year. I don't know when they film the programme but that might have caused problems and made it too difficult.

Actually this doesn't surprise me. The researchers "plan" the possible routes by trying them themselves (to check they are actually doable) and find the jobs for the directory in advance. Presumably at the research stage they realised the China leg was only going to be feasible if the testing restrictions were relaxed and that didn't happen in time.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/04/2024 14:07

i think they went to china in the first RATW, but very little filming

RefreshingCandour · 26/04/2024 14:10

I need to know what months it was filmed!!! I am thinking it must have been autumn/winter because of the weather in Vietnam…..

Tarkan · 26/04/2024 14:14

I googled the baby crying competition the lads saw in the first episode and that apparently normally happens in May. They might have come across one at a different time of the year but according to Wiki it's usually done to coincide with Children's Day which is the 5th of May.

Ooh thank you!

Tarkan · 26/04/2024 15:03

Disregard it being May. They must have found a competition at another time of year.

I just remembered they mentioned a Cambodian national holiday in the last episode so I went to check. Pchum Ben, which in 2023 started on October 13th. So we have an exact date for when they were reaching Cambodia. That's when Isabel and Eugenie struggled to get transport at first.

RefreshingCandour · 26/04/2024 15:09

Yes that makes more sense as Central Vietnam was deluged with rain but it was OK in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh = autumn

Thank you

Tarkan · 26/04/2024 18:08

I drive DH crazy with noticing little details like that in shows and then having to look up everything about them so I'm just glad it came in useful for a change. Blush

He's been working a lot so hasn't seen any of this series with me and still doesn't believe me about the penis park. Grin

I wanna take my teen to the penis park!

Haha!!

mysparkleismissing · 26/04/2024 19:28

I asked my sister to apply with me for series 5 but she can't she's off travelling to India during the filming window - next year!!

TokyoSushi · 26/04/2024 19:34

They're filming this years in October/November but not sure if that matches the weather.

Wonkypictureframe · 26/04/2024 19:40

Maybe it depends on where they’ll be travelling?

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 26/04/2024 21:00

I am applying for next season with my friend this weekend... along with 1000s of others I'm sure!

Tarkan · 26/04/2024 21:12

I would love to apply but I have chronic pain and fatigue and I just don't think I could cope with the amount of walking or dodgy seats you're likely to end up in for hours. I'm also on some medication which could be an issue in some countries and I don't think I would want to risk being without it as that would make me even worse.

So I'll just hope someone else in here gets on the show and I'll live through you instead. 😁

awaynboilyurheid · 26/04/2024 21:26

RadoxMoon · 24/04/2024 22:26

Why would you cry over a stranger?

I don’t watch the programme for sob stories. We all have them. I prefer to see the race.

Because he was just 5 when he lost his mum and that’s sad? Surprisingly I cried too and I’m not weepy at tv stories at all usually.
Thought they were typical young boys when they met back up it was a chat about the lanterns rather than the emotion behind it. Hope they win.
Still not keen on Stephen, the way he was pointing to his watch at the bus driver, was so rude. Shame Bridie and mum didn’t get a move on and maybe they would still be in but seemed to not get the race element.

Let us know how your application goes!!!

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 26/04/2024 22:06

@mysparkleismissing

Will do! It's been quite good fun getting our 'story' together and wondering where they (we 🤔) might go next season even if nothing comes of it.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/04/2024 23:51

Just placemarking to catch up later, I've only seen the first episode.

It reminds me of Drop Zone years ago, but without the peril of missing the helicopter!
