Just seen my first advert that it's back!!!! Japan to Indonesia starting 10th April, brilliant, my absolute favourite!

Thanks, @burnoutbabe and @Dulra for clearing up the giant rucksack confusion !
So much of this programme is edited (and very often in random ways) that it’s hard to follow at times.
I don’t think Bridie and her Mum were in it for the race element , more the experience and to build Bridie’s confidence .
And though I normally dislike the “journey” narrative, Alfie’s back story goes a long way to explain why he is like he is . I feel more warmly towards him now.
Isabel is a legend, really felt for her when she was having qualms about the meal , felt Eugenie could have helped her out more than she did .

I thought Eugenie's behaviour towards Isabel over the food seemed unkind and dismissive. Although she knows her daughter in a way that we don't so perhaps she thought she was being a bit of a princess over the food. But it was strange. Perhaps heavily edited.

I agree with this. Eugenie should have been more supportive though Isabel could have tried a bit harder not to offend her hosts.

However I thought Eugenie wasn't trying as hard as she could as they approached the checkpoint hotel - saying she wanted to stop and wipe her face? When she didn't have a clear idea of where they were in the race and, potentially, faced being eliminated? Is she a little jealous of her bright daughter I wonder? And would Eugenie be quite happy to end their journey now so she can go back home and to her home comforts?

They need a private conversation I think to clear the air about their individual expectations. 🌹

Stephen reminds me of Harry Enfield's "Only Me!" character...

This is soooo accurate!!! 😂

Stressybetty · 25/04/2024 12:01

Was aghast at Stephen's rudeness shoving the map behind each curtain on the bus. He seems really entitled crashing and storming about like everyone is obliged to get out of his way, let him jump queues and help them out, rude man! His wife just puts a miserable face on. Disappointed with Bridie and mum, everyone else rushing to the checkpoint and they were happy messing around with melons or something, then saying I suppose we should get going to the checkpoint, you think?? Seemed they were enjoying the journey and experience too much. Gone right off James after the attempted lie too. Not really keen on anyone at this point but probably prefer the boys to win as it would mean more to them.

Alfie's rudeness is different to Steve's. Steve seems to come from a sense of superiority and "I don't care" whereas Alfie eating on the go is more ... I don't know... superficial? It's mostly a lack of maturity and understanding.

Ifiori · 25/04/2024 12:44

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/04/2024 10:50

That was nasty. At least Betty didn't let him get away with it.

I can let this go a bit, it is a competition after all. Eugenie and Isabel were free to go and find the information out for themselves if they wanted

valjane · 25/04/2024 12:48

We are only seeing what they want us to see. I wouldn't be surprised if when Stephen was going up and down the coach with his sign if the people had already been asked, then it was filmed. I think Stephen is brash, and a lot of people, myself included, have taken against him because of that but I wonder if Alfie had done it if we'd have seen it in the same light. It was daylight outside and it might have been just after the journey started. Yes it was intrusive but he did show initiative. I found the two women who went out - Bridie and ? - didn't seem to show any initiative at all.

I wonder if you’ve hit the nail on the head with the jealousy theory , it would explain a few of Eugenie’s actions.
Isabel seems to want a better relationship with her, maybe as two adults rather than the parent/child model .
But as so many of us have said , we only see what the programme makers choose to let us see. I’d love an unedited episode occasionally !

Bibpot · 25/04/2024 13:24

I love the boys. They seem to be trying really hard to be supportive of each other even if it’s not the way they’d choose to work individually.

This, exactly. Hugely impressed by their emotional intelligence to each other. I’d like a whole show with just them TBH Grin

NCTDN · 25/04/2024 15:59

I don't blame James for lying. It's a competition so if I'd have been asked that questioni wouldn't want to help the other team by telling them the answers either.

He could have just said, find out for yourself, no need to mislead them.

I always think he's so funny when they bump into other racers. He just looks dead ahead ignoring them as if that'll will make them disappear 😂

RefreshingCandour · 25/04/2024 16:32

Ah I think James is fine. He’s used to being around competitive sporty lads and he’s 20! Very young.

SoupDragon · 25/04/2024 16:50

One look at his face and it was so obvious James was lying!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 25/04/2024 18:50

I get the impression Steve thinks he's hilarious. If he feels he's on borrowed time maybe he's decided to pretty much just to do whatever he likes.

mysparkleismissing · 25/04/2024 20:20

Are they not allowed to buy a map to replace the ones they've lost?

TokyoSushi · 25/04/2024 21:43

I've caught up! Still LOVE it!

Maybe I haven’t been paying enough attention but I assumed they had to feed themselves out of the budget but we never see them handing over money for food or that affecting the budget, do we

i totally don’t get the whole map thing either, just buy one ffs. Although it would eat into the budget.

it must be a total logistical nightmare to film as each group has an entourage or at least 3 I think. And there obv has to be space for them and their equipment on the buses etc too. No joke. Hopefully the crews have their own budgets for food and the occasional hotel.

The lads bought food that turned out to be more expensive than they expected in Japan. They also decided to share a steak to save money but got it for free. I can't recall any of the others being filmed buying food.

Riverlee · 25/04/2024 21:55

I think they do buy food out of their budgets. Didn’t Isabel say something to her mum about the food being rationed?

She did and Viv saved money by making sandwiches in the hotel - hotels tend to take a dim view of that.

SoupDragon · 25/04/2024 22:00

They've paid for food on-screen on several occasions. Betty and
James messed up with the cost of something in the first episode. Alfie and Owen were going to pay for the steak which is why they went for one small piece.
