Just seen my first advert that it's back!!!! Japan to Indonesia starting 10th April, brilliant, my absolute favourite!

Anyway can we get back to discussing the show?

It's part of the show. The producers included it so it's part of the show.

Elebag · 25/04/2024 07:03

Editing will do everyone the dirty. We'll probably be rooting for Steve and Viv to win this time next week.

PuppyMonkey · 25/04/2024 07:24

Steve is a year older than my DP, yet acts 20 years older.

I don’t believe they’ve plotted the routes without having a map. They had little accurate sketches of the countries - they just did that from memory/instinct did they? Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 25/04/2024 07:25

It's not editing that makes Steve look bloody awful. They couldn't show him being breathtakingly rude if he hadn't been!

I very much doubt it. He's been horrible from the start when Viv introduced him as 'an acquired taste'.

I wonder if they looked at the maps from the other teams (or other travellers) once they knew where they were going. although not James!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 25/04/2024 07:39

Looking at the map sketches people have made, they must be looking at each other's maps or maps in bus and train stations and copying info from there.

Eugenie said she doesn't say what she thinks in order to keep the peace, but she clearly then builds up a lot of resentment. You get one life, it's okay to disagree, it's how you deal with that and move on that's key.

Did anyone else clock that the upgrade to the more plush overnight bus was £2? Got to be worth paying that!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 25/04/2024 08:31

A tiny (really tiny) part of me had to begrudgingly admire Steve for his initiative but actually I was quite appalled. Imagine being a lone woman traveller and that happening... Maybe Viv should have done it? Also how did they collect the tickets?

Disappointed they got through. Really hope they don't win.

DH and I seriously considered applying as I think we'd be quite good at it but we didn't have a back story - then with series 3, it turns out we did (infertility) - dammit!

So a group of us are planning (or not planning!) a "race across Italy" next year between ourselves (but with cards and phones obviously). Just need to decide on checkpoints.

Apparently there have to be enough spaces for your "security" person as well (I guess they reshoot those scenes!!)
Maybe there wasn't room for everyone on the more plush bus and the other team got there first?

All those saying ‘just buy a new map’, where would you buy a detailed world map in your town quickly? Now buy one in a South Korean city or Vietnam and it is all in the local language not English. Not much use.

I imagine the film crew have a map that they can make notes from and draw their own version, but not keep. How else would they know where border crossings are?

I've often wondered why they don't have the map in a plastic folder hanging around the neck. I know it sounds rather like when you put elastic string on your toddler's gloves and thread it through their coat sleeves (do people still do that?) but at least they'd have less chance of losing it. At least one team each series seems to lose what's quite an important piece of equipment. 🌹

FeltCarrot · 25/04/2024 09:08

@CharlotteStreetW1 What a fab idea, I’d love to do that!

I see that map they're using and it seems to be a map of the whole world! Not exactly much detail. Why didn't they give them one of that part of Asia at least? (on arrival, once they know where they're going)

They must be getting extra help somewhere along the line. I think there's so much the viewer doesn't know or see with this programme!

They both lost their map very early on when in cities in Japan didn't they? I can't imagine a map couldn't be found there.

I could easily get one from WHS in my main town.

AIstolemylunch · 25/04/2024 09:57

How old are Stephen and viv? Aren't they in their sixties? They're acting like they're in their 80s. They both seem preety fit for their age too. I knoe he had a heart attack but didn't he say in the last episode it was many years ago?

I think Sharon and Brydie threw in the towel, they seemed like theyd had enough. I'm not sure how committed they were, they seems far more interested in appearing virtuous and platforming dyslexia than playing the game. At least Alfie is actually racing as well as having an actually touching back story.

crumblingschools · 25/04/2024 10:02

@AIstolemylunch weren’t they saying that after his heart attack they gave him a life expectancy which he is nearly at. Maybe, that is why they act older than they are as the ‘end’ seems closer to them.

They're 61 and 65. Stephen is pretty much the same as Eugenie! Mind you I'm only a couple of years younger and I don't moan like any of them

I thought they said that they gave him 20 years 18 years ago? In which case he had a heart attack very young and I don't believe that shortens your life expectancy, unless you have an underlying condition, which he'd surely be mentioning. I could have misheard though. Viv seems very fit and slim. I think the health/age thing is just their USP to get on the show and now they're just hyping it because they have to. It's annoying though as it feeds into public consciousness about 60y olds being past it, which the vast majority are not. And Eugenie is surely similar age and no one goes on about that, despite her actually having mobility issues, which they don't. And none of them would have got insurance for this if they were actually at deaths door surely?

Anyway, I hope they drop the acts and backstories now and all play the game properly and actually try and win, which I think they all actually want now.

crumblingschools · 25/04/2024 10:12

@AIstolemylunch that’s what I am referring to. They gave him 20 years so maybe he therefore saw 60 as old as felt he didn’t have a hope of getting to 80

I'm 69 and I don't moan like them or push in front of queues or tell coach drivers what to do.

crumblingschools · 25/04/2024 10:36

@CaptainMyCaptain think he does that because he is rude!

Quite and I expect he has been rude all his life. The constant moaning isn't necessary either. I'm sure they have medical checks beforehand and he wouldn't be allowed to take part if he was likely to croak before the end. 61 is still of working age and always has been for men.

CrossPurposes · 25/04/2024 10:49

What was going on in James's silly head to tell such a daft lie to Eugenie?

That was nasty. At least Betty didn't let him get away with it.
