MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I am watching Rain or Shine at the moment while I wait for new episodes of QoT. Good lord - the heartbreak, the slow burn, the Lee Jun Ho. It is heavy but not overdone. Great.

That's one of my favourites AmVa! Junho is brilliant in it - that's my favourite Junho, scruffy angst-tactic Junho.

PunksVersusBrats · 18/04/2024 17:01

Rain or Shine is 😍!

I've not watched Extraordinary You, so I've added it to the (infinite) list.

Dragonrock · 18/04/2024 17:50

I finally finished Ghost Doctor and would highly recommend if you like ensemble cast comedies, with a touch of pathos. Sung Dong-il was particularly good as were the actors who played the other ghosts. Rain oppa was very convincing (wonder if he will give us the topless summer shows and focus more on his acting?) and twinkly eye Kim Bum was very engaging. Need to decide if I got full tilt for QoT but need to watch final of The Apprentice tonight with OH. I confess I spend a lot of the time hiding my embarrassment at contestants as the majority lack any common sense at all!

Dragonrock · 18/04/2024 17:50

give up, not us - sighhh

mrsfeatherbottom · 18/04/2024 18:23

Have added Rain or Shine to my list!

I don't think Extraordinary You is on any of the platforms I have. :(

Cobol · 18/04/2024 18:36

Extraordinary You used to be on Netflix but it's dropped off now. You can watch it for free on Viki with adverts (or just subscribe, of course 😉)

mrsfeatherbottom · 18/04/2024 18:38

I can't find Rain or Shine on the spreadsheet. Am I being stupid?

We need to update the spreadsheet. It was called ‘Just Between Lovers’ on Viki. It’s a great show. Very much like ‘My Mister’ the pay-off is immense, so it is worth staying with the sad bits. I want to watch it again.

Maybe not of interest to most people, but I just noticed that Netflix now say that Love in the Moonlight leaves Netflix on 16th May.

Thanks @boatyardblues! Mystery solved.

I'd forgotten I'd added this to my Netflix watch list. I've watched 3.5 episodes of love to hate you and it was not for me. Haven't found myself skipping quite so much before

Switch over to Rain or Shine. You won’t regret it. Junho is really good in it. King the Land was such a waste of his talents.

peanutcookie - I also initially gave up on Love to Hate You after about 4 episodes but then went back to it later and actually ending up enjoying. And it's shorter than some other ones too.

AmVa · 18/04/2024 22:12

@TheLoupGarou agreed this is my favourite JunHo so far (judging against KtL and Wok of Love where things verged a little too much towards the ridiculous). He was very hot in KtL but the show was lacking a bit of plot 🤣.

I am in that kind of mood with this show where I just want to abandon work / parenting / everything and just watch Rain or Shine for 6-10 hours. 😫😫

We’ve all been there. I watched the whole of A Shop for Killers on Sunday. It’s easier when you have a room-dwelling teen and hobby-occupied DH, not so easy with energetic pre-schooler AmVa. Please be assured your immersive kdrama days are still ahead of you.

Hope that today is better @peanutcookie. I have quite fond memories of a very nasty bout of Covid last year, as I spent an entire week in bed re-watching A Korean Odyssey.

Thanks @boboatyardblues and @PunksVersusBrats 💪🏽

I am off at the weekend but I'll be spending a large portion of it catching up with the marking I was too ill to do over Easter hols. Today was much better.

peanutcookie · 19/04/2024 19:42

I've just watched the first episode of Rain or Shine. It's hard to believe that it's the same guy in King the Land, the characters look so different! I didn't get why he was breaking the memorial at the end but I expect it will be explained in due course

PunksVersusBrats · 19/04/2024 20:03

As a fellow member of the profession @peanutcookie, solidarity. It's a tough gig these days.
