MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I've not managed to keep up with the thread, but I have been watching Shogun which is excellent. But not completely convinced that FL would be into the English bloke. Hi to the recent joiners 👋👋👋

The penultimate episode of Shogun was so tense! Only one to go!!

boatyardblues · 20/04/2024 17:08

Good to see there’s no slouching on the PPL in ep 13 of QOT. 🙄 at the branded coffee cups though - they’re fugly.

Anyone watching Race Across the World? This week's episode, they went to South Korea! DD was horrified at the thought of the Penis Park.

boatyardblues · 20/04/2024 20:44

Yes. I’ve been mulling over the penis park. This is like Alexander Armstrong’s South Korea - too much gimicky crap, not enough proper Korean culture. Hmm I hope there’s more authentic SK this week before they move on.

mrsfeatherbottom · 20/04/2024 20:46

I wonder will they visit the DMZ in their rest days before setting off on the next leg.

Andante57 · 21/04/2024 02:34

I find this really depressing. Korea has got such an interesting history and culture and there are so many wonderful things to do and see - what a shame they concentrated on gimmicky rubbish.

polkettle · 21/04/2024 06:34

To be fair there was also the lovely chestnut picking family and fish market ahjummas and Race around the World is always more about the contestant's "journey" than the geographical journey. I shall be gutted if the more culturally involved but slow mum and daughter get the boot next week.

The volume of tears produced by KSH in QoT is increasing every episode and losing him to dehydration is a real threat. The neck puckering is probably all down to it. The man's half raisin at this point.

AmVa · 21/04/2024 12:35

@polkettle I don't see things drying up in the next few episodes either 😬😬

Feeling quite smug about my comments from last week after episode 13 💁

mrsfeatherbottom · 21/04/2024 14:25

I scrolled back to check your comments last week, AmVa and you were spot on! Well done. It also appears that the long lost brother will also serve a purpose!

⭐️ for AmVa. I see I also correctly called what was beyond the doors. 🙂

I am not making any kdrama progress beyond blubbing QOT because I got caught up watching the central/south American Race Across The World with DH and DS. I haven’t seen anything that makes me want to backpack round central America, although Costa Rica and the bit in the cloud forest looked lovely. The sea in Belize also looked inviting but too hot for someone who burns as easily as I do. Moonbathing is more where I’m at. 😁

QoT: I know the clue is in the name, but STOP FUCKING GURNING EVERYONE!!!!

It's exhausting rolling my eyes this much 🤣

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 21/04/2024 18:52

Kim Ji-won can't act a decent cry either

polkettle · 21/04/2024 19:08

Pretty poor couple of episodes this week for QoT this week. Such tonal whiplash and mess of different storylines that the feels have ebbed away for me again.
I mean KSH is still the husband who was PLEASED she was dying in episode 2.
Still some fun to be had nevertheless.

PunksVersusBrats · 21/04/2024 20:13

Agree @polkettle. Also, with all that money, why can't she have a ring that fits? And, yet again, the patient is the only one who doesn't seem to be included in the treatment loop 🤨

polkettle · 21/04/2024 20:17

They NEVER have a ring that fits Punks 🙄

peanutcookie · 21/04/2024 21:55

I enjoyed ep14 of QOT, was bawling one minute and then laughing the next.

Have they ever explained what happened with the baby? They just showed the appointment with the doctor and then her moving the furniture out of the nursery but never what happened or how things got so bad between them.

I'm also quite excited for the next episode of RATW, and hope they have some good insights into Korean culture

mrsfeatherbottom · 21/04/2024 22:12

I laughed when he said "I'm not a goat!". And bawled when he was being taken away by the police when she was coming out of surgery.

I was puzzled by that. He seemed happy when he heard about the baby and then he comes back to see the furniture being taken away and obvious bad feeling between them.

2 more episodes so I'm hoping they will still explain it. Am also sure the notebook will find its way back to her

mrsfeatherbottom · 21/04/2024 22:36

I presumed a miscarriage (as opposed to a stillbirth) as there was no flashbacks of her visibly pregnant.

It was when they were in the church for me and when the lorry crashed into the car. I saw that arrest coming but I still shouted at the TV! Next weekend will have to give strict instructions to the family to leave me alone. Or perhaps I will take myself to the garden room and watch in there, most of them won't think to come and look there

boatyardblues · 21/04/2024 23:33

So confused with QOT. Why are they saying Frankfurt when they keep showing Berlin landmarks? Museum Island is a UNESCO world heritage site FGS. 🤦‍♀️

I did too @mrsfeatherbottom. Having been there several times myself, what you think would be a shared experience of grief isn't. You're both experiencing it differently and talking to each other about it can be too painful. It's easy to resent the other person for not experiencing it exactly as you do and communication can break down entirely. Our marriage survived it but many don't 😞

polkettle · 22/04/2024 06:47

Germany is obviously an amorphous singularity in K world like "Africa". I think there were Heidelberg bits in earlier episodes too.

Definitely an early miscarriage in QoT and they never shared their pain and shut off from each other. Hoping for a baby and a racoon in ep 16.

mrsfeatherbottom · 22/04/2024 07:12

@PunksVersusBrats - totally agree. Sorry you have experienced it. We had two miscarriages early in our marriage and I dealt with it very differently to DH. We got through it and have two beautiful teenagers now but it was the worst period of my life.
