MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Re-watching Destined With You, I have remembered what my gripe was and why I didn't rate it as highly as I would have. A shaman-woo romcom with a decently ominous side plot is usually right up my mountain trail but, for such a new drama, it felt rather old fashioned and 🙄 to have yet another rich and handsome ML being low-grade obnoxious to a perfectly nice but poorer/lower staus FL ('cos issues) and her just accepting this as frustrating but somehow normal. 5 years ago, yes, but there have been so many better ones recently.

Maybe my menopausal arsehole radar is just set too low these days 😆

Edited

I thought the FL was quite disappointing (& annoying) in this and also in Tale of the Nine Tailed

Yes, she's a bit wet. The whole thing is OK, but a bit Friday afternoon when everyone's knackered at work, script-wise.

Welcome to the rabbit hole peanutcookie!
Kdrama sounds like the perfect way to recuperate from surgery! Hope you are well on the mend now 🙂
I'm a big fan of Ji Chang Wook, but even I struggled a bit with Backstreet Rookie . If you like Business Proposal and want a romcom I suggest Love to Hate You, Fight for My Way, What's Wrong With Secretary Kim, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. For more JCW in his prime Healer or Suspicious Partner.

My DH watches mostly under sufferance but enjoyed Gyeongsong Creature, DP, A Killer Paradox and (randomly) Sell Your Haunted House 🤣

Thanks for the suggestions, I've added a few to my watch list on Netflix and I'm starting Love to Hate You because I love a fake romance trope.

Punks It was extra disappointing because Rowoon is usually such a well-mannered young man in his dramas. We expext that kind of nobbish behaviour from the likes of Ahn Bo Hyun, but not lovely Rowoon. 😄

Agreed - I think my tolerance of drama a-hole Rowoon was higher because I know what a sweetie real life Rowoon is. DWY was only OK though. Punks that sort of thing is normally right up my street too - I didn't hate it but ended up feeling meh.

Punks I dropped Destined with You after two episodes or so. Just wasn't exciting or interesting enough for me to spend time on.

Andante57 · 17/04/2024 05:50

Alex took us to this house which is a Hometown Cha Cha Cha location. Is it the grandmother’s house? I saw the show some time ago and my memory isn’t clear.
I much enjoyed episode 12 of QofT. What were they all staring at at the end, I wonder?

MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck
polkettle · 17/04/2024 06:16

That is indeed halmeoni's house where they had a merry trope time washing sheets with their feet in a bucket I think.

AmVa · 17/04/2024 07:22

No I think that's Hong DuSik's house! The granny's house was also featured in WI recently.

polkettle · 17/04/2024 09:16

Aha - but they did do the washing there right?

Cobol · 17/04/2024 09:36

I think you're all taking Destined With You way too seriously....☹️
Although Rowoon's just as funny and much nicer in Matchmakers in a similar love against his will role if DWY really isn't for you (though it does get into its stride once it gets going Migs).
I'm all behind on QoT now so have some catching up to do today.

mrsfeatherbottom · 17/04/2024 11:14

I agree - it's Chief Hong's house!

I really liked DWY although, to be fair, I'm easily pleased and will put up with a lot if Rowoon is involved!

Currently watching My Liberation Notes which scored very highly on the spreadsheet but finding it hard work. So much navel gazing bullshit.

But... but... MR GU!!!

mrsfeatherbottom · 17/04/2024 12:27

Mr Gu is gorgeous! Absolute disaster of a boyfriend but so nice to look at! May be the only reason I'm still watching. Blush

AmVa · 17/04/2024 12:32

@Cobol I agree! DWY required some (ok a lot) of suspension of disbelief - some of the shows rules around the spells etc were quite hazy from memory but Rowoon as a reluctant lovestruck idiot was 🤌 it was just fun!!

polkettle · 17/04/2024 13:37

I loved MLN but I think it made a better weekly watch than a binge through. And either the characters speak to you or they really irritate you - you wouldn't be alone in finding it hard work because its not plot driven. I found it laugh out loud funny and moving, and turns out a taciturn alcoholic doing woodwork was just swooon but its marmite.
Have you watched My Mister by the same writer Mrs? That has more going on and is really outstanding. Although a very bittersweet watch now...

Have you got to the enforced work social group yet MrsF? That’s how Lee Ki-Woo got his Great Dane nickname - he’s standing next to chihuahua man outside the café. 😄

OP posts:
Cobol · 17/04/2024 19:34

It took me quite a while to watch MLN, it's definitely not a show for binging, but I found it really thought provoking and some of the scenes and imagery have stayed with me for a long time. It's not easy to watch unless you're in the mood, though, I would say.

I'm now up to date with QoT and all I have to say is - blimey 😯
Also worried the ending could go either way (in terms of happy/sad).

Is anyone else watching Eye Love You BTW? It's weird seeing a Korean ML in a jdrama, but it's a brilliant idea for story (might not work so well for our k language superstars like Saram though, as the fun is in not knowing what he's thinking along with the FL). I don't remember Chae Jong-hyeop being quite so naughty and flirtatious in Unlock My Boss either. Needless to say, I'm rather enjoying it 😁

mrsfeatherbottom · 17/04/2024 19:42

The social club thing was so funny. I'm a pretty sociable person but even I would have issues with being forced to join a club with people I work with!

polkettle · 17/04/2024 20:52

I love the club organiser in MLN and have recently had it revealed to me that she is also square bobbed dopey village lady in QoT. A great character actress!
Just finished Eye Love You Cobol which was enjoyably fluffy (although final obstacle to love was an absolutely elementary confusion of causality and correlation 😉) A drama made to make a KD fan feel clever as we can translate more than the FL does.

Cobol · 17/04/2024 21:35

Pol I'm only a few episodes in so good to hear it remains enjoyable nonsense to the end.

AmVa I knew someone else enjoyed DWY but couldn't remember who. Looks like we get to have Rowoon in cute comic mode all to ourselves 😉

boatyardblues · 17/04/2024 22:05

Extraordinary You Rowoon is my favourite Rowoon. He has a dreamlike quality in that, perhaps because the plot is so trippy. 😄

Haha that was the one where my son (age 10) was like "whoa, that guy is meant to be in high-school? how is he so handsome?"

I like all iterations of Rowoon tbh including rl version 😁......
