MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

@boatyardblues yes that scene in the office cafeteria was so funny!!! It really is a lot of fun, very glad I persevered past the patchy episode 1.

Just back to the hotel after Stray Kids! It was fabulous - K-pop fans are the nicest people. We had such a good day.

Did you enjoy it, @clare8allthepies ??

We had an awesome time, I'm glad you enjoyed it too. The girls are already begging me to buy tickets for the tour that's not even announced yet!

Recommend A Time for Cats and Dogs - feature length documentary on Viki about strays in an abandoned village. It's a bit piecemeal in construction but lots of melancholic charm and Korean sentiment.

How did I miss that Epik High released a new album in June? That’s my commute sorted for this week. 🥳

Still really enjoying MNAD but I feel like the past few episodes have not given enough ML and FL tidbits. Is it any wonder I am feeling a strong pull towards 2ML given the joint screen time we are seeing??

Migs - The Double is on my watchlist definitely, just need to find time to squeeze it in .....

🚨for historical/BL/c-drama lovers (bit niche I know, is it just me??) 🚨 Meet Me At The Blossom has just dropped 2 episodes on Viki/GagaOoLala/iQiyi - those two episodes contained Xianxia style sword fights, a deposed crown Prince, plotting courtiers, implausible cross dressing (Tale of Nokdu style), a spoiled young master, assassins, aphrodisiac needles and a 2 day post sex coma. Immortal line from the MC "I was surprised to find out you were a man, but I thought about it and I decided true love doesn't care about gender"
Honestly, very extra but I loved it.

Definitely not just you. Thanks for the recommend. Half way through first episode. High camp, swishy hair and kites. I’m happy. Thanks for the recommend. Also loving MSMobster and re watching Something in the Rain after loving the slow burn of Midnight Romance etc which, as previously discussed really should have just been called Graduation. And The Double looks promising.

Love all the love and posts on here. Thanks all 😘

Lovely Runner has to be on there, surely?

MigsandTiggs · 16/07/2024 23:03

Loup, I'm going in with your recommendation, Meet You at the Blossom. If the ponytails, swords and bow and arrows don't turn me to BL, nothing will. 😁

Currently watching:
The Auditors
Good Partner
Miss Day & Night
Red Swan
My Military Valentine
The Boyfriend

And waiting for the full drop of My Sweet Mobster before resuming.

Cobol · 16/07/2024 23:05

Second Lovely Runner - lighter fantasy or romance? - and would also like to nominate Missing Crown Prince for historical/period drama (sageuk)

AmVa · 16/07/2024 23:54

Third lovely runner!! Also - is queen of tears on there yet??

Still too early to call for some of the currently airing ones. Could do a marry my husband and completely fall flat on face in second half.

PunksVersusBrats · 17/07/2024 06:33

Is The Atypical Family family there? Trying to think of what I've watched recently. Did Death's Game go on the last one? Both similar fantasy/time-shifty type ones.

DoloresDelEriba · 17/07/2024 06:56

My Dearest in Historical
and should there be a BL section?? I’ve gone down a massive BL alley and also Taiwanese bonkers ones…😂

Cobol · 17/07/2024 07:26

Actually My Dearest probably does belong on the list more than Missing Crown Prince. Although I haven't seen it yet I remember it getting really good reviews, whereas my suggestion may be a little too niche for the front page, I suspect my love of Suho may be clouding my judgement 😂

AmVa · 17/07/2024 09:42

Oh yes to Atypical Family!! I knew there was something recent I wasn't remembering

Thecatisboss · 17/07/2024 09:59

I struggled to get into Missing Crown Prince - is it worth having another go? Loved My Dearest though as it seemed to be a realistic depiction.

boatyardblues · 17/07/2024 10:10

Which genre for Atypical Family? Heavier romance? Darker supernatural?

Edit: Thanks for the prompt suggestions. 👍

OP posts:
AmVa · 17/07/2024 10:29

Heavier romance maybe?? It's really funny at times but def not a romcom.

Cobol · 17/07/2024 12:50

Thecatisboss · 17/07/2024 09:59

Ha! I'm being put on the spot now as I really enjoyed Missing Crown Prince but I can't quite explain why. I agree it's not realistic - the FL is way too modern in her outlook and beats people up; the music is OTT and the many flashbacks in the earlier episodes are a bit annoying; there are no decent sword fights and no hot assassins. And yet, as it goes on it just gets more and more interesting. It's like a knotty puzzle the crown prince has to solve to protect everyone he cares about and its just so tense all the way through. It's unlike any other sageuk I've seen, and could well not be to everyone's taste, but I loved it.

PunksVersusBrats · 18/07/2024 06:15

I agree with @AmVa for The Atypical Family, heavier/darker romance.

Thecatisboss · 19/07/2024 15:40

@Cobol think I will give it another go especially as all episodes have been released waiting for episodes is too frustrating!

So obviously I've started watching MNAD as wanted something non taxing as I'm recovering from a minor hospital procedure and it appealed.
