MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I was wondering if it was the one from The Glory but I suppose they all look roughly the same 😁

You have a point. It was the warm-toned wood cladding on the stage that made me think this one was the same.

Connections (Olga's) is a ride of a mystery thriller and I'm there for it. The speed at which adrenaline pumping events unfold has put The Atypical Family to shame, so I'm going to pause it until the series finishes. As others are finding out, sometimes you have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy a particular drama. I'm also going to check out older shows as I only became aware of k-dramas during Covid lockdown.

Perilla update.
Further to my glut of perilla last year, I dried some of the leaves in autumn. Now I'm thinking of turning the dried leaves into powder in the coffee grinder for sprinkling on food. Any thoughts on this will be appreciated. #hestonblumenthal

boatyardblues · 27/05/2024 22:03

Is anyone else struggling with Atypical Family? It has everything going for it - high concept, great cast, great writing, high production values, intrigue - but somehow it feels like I’m wading through treacle. I just got to the end of ep 6 and thought “great, I’m all caught up!” But no, Netflix cued up ep 7, I realised I’m further behind than I thought and that did not make me happy.

boatyardblues · 27/05/2024 22:05

How would you use your dried perilla Migs? I was thinking you could add it to rice balls along with the chopped seaweed to make them more tasty, or in egg rolls.

OP posts:
MigsandTiggs · 27/05/2024 22:48

Boaty, I wondered about using it in dipping sauce, on bbq meat, soup ... I need to look at how perilla oil is used as it might be a possible substitute, flavourwise? Rice balls are a good idea. Gimbap?

mrsfeatherbottom · 27/05/2024 23:06

I'm watching What's Wrong with Secretary Kim now that I've got Viki and I kept seeing things about it. Just watched an episode with a flashback to her childhood and her parents are the couple from Because This is My First Life!!

Cobol · 27/05/2024 23:19

We only got about 20 minutes into Atypical Family before we had to give up because we were finding the plinky, plonky music too annoying Boaty. Like you we found the premise intriguing but couldn't get into it, so we've ended up watching Secret Royal Inspector instead which is proving much more fun.

This is one of the joys of kdrama once you get a few under your belt - nods to other series, cameos and hilarious parodies within another show.

I could not be loving The Atypical Family more!! Feel like it's really different, goes in directions I don't expect and I really am finding things to like in almost all the morally grey characters.

The music is def a bit unusual but I am into it now.

polkettle · 28/05/2024 05:45

Also enjoying Atypical Family and what it's doing with score (which is certainly more original than most but clearly marmite!) however have not caught up.on this week's because I am bingeing through My Lovely Sam Soon from 2005 on Kocowa and it's just GREAT.

PunksVersusBrats · 28/05/2024 06:36

I'm really enjoying The Atypical Family, possibly because I didn't have high expectations, so it's sort of crept up on me. I hadn't noticed the music though 😳

AmVa · 28/05/2024 06:57

The two episode from this week of TAF are really great. It also has kept up on me a bit but now I am fully invested.

boatyardblues · 28/05/2024 14:17

I-Na needs to find a new glasses shopping buddy (Atypical Family). Those Harry Potter frames are way too big for her face.

Yes, plus the bridge doesn't fit so they keep slipping down her nose. And I have to wait for at least a week after I've chosen new frames for the lenses to be fitted 🤔

It also turns out in K-World that you can just stop drinking, having been consuming vast quantities all day, every day, for years, without withdrawl problems. Mind you, that's the same in My Mister (the stair-vomiting actress) 🙄

I got a bit bored after 2 episodes boaty - weird as it would normally be right up my street. Can't put my finger on it, just a bit meh? Might go back to it when I'm more in the mood?

I thought the same about alcohol withdrawal, and also that he looked so healthy.

I’m part way through ep 8 of Atypical Family and I would say eps 7 & 8 mark a turning point where they start to do something more creative and interesting with the central conceit. About bloody time!

I've finished Lovely Runner and it was, indeed, lovely 🫶. I think I'm going to need that warm glow to sustain me through the next episode of Missing Crown Prince when I get to it as things were looking quite tense for Suho when I last left off.

Agree on Lovely Runner - 'twas lovely!

boatyardblues · 28/05/2024 23:11

I wondered how they’d fill the last 50 mins of episode 16. It turns out they filled it up with ALL the good stuff. I may return to it as a feel good top up if I’m having a crap day. 10/10 for everything being wrapped up nicely. Bea would give it the thumbs up.

@MiMigsandTiggs thanks for the info and yay I have the Viki app on my TV. I had planned to start Lovely Runner tonight but DH's football got cancelled so we watched Rain or Shine instead. My goodness its slow! Good thing we like the acting and the story but I do wish it would speed up a bit!

AmVa · 29/05/2024 00:48

@boatyardblues Agree - episodes 7 & 8 of TAF were really great, marked a bit of a turning point in the plot in terms of how much information everyone knows and how they are reacting to it. I laughed a lot in both of them.

Can't wait to watch LR finale!!! I really am going to miss this show once it's over.

Andante57 · 30/05/2024 08:00

We’ve watched two episodes of Lovely Runner and I’m finding it a bit stalkerish. (Sorry, that’s a bit vague but I don’t want to give spoilers).
Does that aspect get better?

Cobol · 30/05/2024 08:25

Andante I think I know what you mean and yes, it changes.
