MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

QoT - what an episode - so much crying all round. Think the baddie is both too much of a pantomime baddie who has one motivation, but isn't menacing enough. I'm not explaining that very well.

Biggest twist for me was Hyun Woo's hairdresser sister being married?? With a child??? Have they ever been mentioned before.

The plot holes are turning into plot chasms!!

polkettle · 22/04/2024 14:51

That was mentioned AmVa but totally in a blink-and-you-miss-it way in first episode or so. And really we don't need MORE plot and characters at this point.

Sorry don't know how to just quote part of a message

They did say something about her costs being so high because she had chosen to send her child abroad to study and that's why she didn't want the divorce to go through as she'd lost her cash cow. The other nephew confused me as I didn't know who he belonged to for a long time and then I was surprised to find he had a mother.
I saw on tiktok today that Hyun Bin and Lee Dong-Wook are confirmed as cameos but I didn't do any further digging. Will just enjoy the cameo if it happens!

Cobol · 22/04/2024 22:55

Thanks to Pol I'm now going to be slightly disappointed if we don't get a raccoon by the end of QoT 😂

boatyardblues · 22/04/2024 23:16

In the same vein as my earlier posts, I’m going to call it: no raccoon. We’ll see. It tells you something about QOT’s kamikaze plotting that we are discussing something as random as imaginary raccoons and whether entirely new characters will be introduced in the penultimate or final episodes. To repurpose a phrase, throwing japchae at the wall to see what sticks.

PunksVersusBrats · 23/04/2024 06:39

I want just a glimpse of a tail in the final scene 😁

polkettle · 23/04/2024 14:33

Fans of nerdy socially awkward JDrama leads - Ripe for the Picking on Netflix is very very sweet.

Dragonrock · 23/04/2024 18:16

Made a school girl error last night. Starting watching a new drama that was pushed at me, Beauty and Mr. Romantic - just checked and it is meant to be 50 episodes 😮. Think I might need to call a halt. Rain or Shine sounds good, and still moved onto QoT yet, I am very behind. On the small ring question, I have often wondered this in K-dramas, why such small jewellery? Esp the wealthy families? Living in HK, I was used to STONKING great gems and now happily look at jewels for light relief.

mrsfeatherbottom · 23/04/2024 19:46

50 episodes? Are they an hour long each?

peanutcookie · 23/04/2024 22:25

DH and I finished My Name at the weekend. If you can ignore that the characters should have died several times over then its a good watch and only 8 episodes. Didn't end how I anticipated but still enjoyed. He has now decided to watch Rain or Shine with me so I picked She would never know to watch on my own. Am on 2nd episode and finding Rowoon's behaviour very off putting, I'm glad fl put him in his place

mrsfeatherbottom · 23/04/2024 22:52

Yeah, I found Rowoon a bit wet and pathetic in She Would Never Know.

polkettle · 24/04/2024 07:06

He's a bit stalker in early episodes but that settles down thankfully.

Andante57 · 24/04/2024 10:37

Just finished epi 14 QofT.

I loved the scene with Manbok and Aunt Beom Ja. I know it wasn’t anything dramatic but they are such good actors.
With head operations, are no bandages needed and is hair always glossy and immaculate afterwards?

Cobol · 24/04/2024 11:11

I think it was some kind of radiotherapy, rather than surgery, Andante. I'm not sure why this wasn't an option from the start, though. Maybe because of the extreme side effect of memory loss?

TheLoupGarou · 24/04/2024 11:16

I didn't like SWNK despite loving Rowoon. There are some very funny and endearing behind the scenes clips of him cringing at his cheesy dialogue in it tho....

Heheh @Dragonrock & @mrsfeatherbottom when if you get into C-drama's 50 episodes will become totally normal and even slightly on the shorter side 😁

I've missed a load of chat - am binging The Spirealm on Viki (I haven't daren't check the number of episodes but I think it's at least 60) . It's great, but probably a bit niche....

I also second Pol's rec of Ripe for the Picking which is absolutely cute-as-anything and nice and short.

Surely the reason was to spin the plot out for 16 episodes ... Smile

Haha - yes!

JinBhoot · 24/04/2024 15:11

Hello hello
its been a while - currently watching Amist a snowstorm of love at a very slow pace - 2 episodes in a week.

Is QoT worth watching?

Andante57 · 24/04/2024 15:33

Is QoT worth watching?

JinBhoot hmmm…..ok, this is just my opinion:
I’m enjoying it and I’ll watch the final two episodes, but it hasn’t grabbed me like CLOY and My Love from the Star.
The title is accurate - except it should be Queen, King, Princes, Princesses + Courtiers of Tears.
There are some annoying unexplained things - which may of course be resolved in the last two episodes - and suspension of disbelief is stretched at times.
However it’s got an excellent cast and both the leads and the supporting actors are doing a great job.
It’s got high ratings so I guess I’m in a minority for being a bit underwhelmed.

bettys · 24/04/2024 19:38

I'm underwhelmed too @Andante57 I will finish it but am enjoying Lovely Runner on Viki much more

MigsandTiggs · 24/04/2024 21:17

Blood Free on Disney+ is rolling alone at a fair pace and after bingeing four eps I can't wait for the rest to air. It's one for lovers of bodyguards, sci-fi and lab cultured protein 😁
