Love/Hate ... worth a watch?

Watching the first episode after seeing many recommendations on here. I absolutely loved KIN and thought this would be similar.
However I'm struggling to deal with the dated, amateurish camera work. It's like watching Grange Hill or Prisoner Cell Block H, for those who remember Grin
Should I persevere or is it like this all the way through?
It's so far not holding a candle to KIN Confused

Oh don’t give up on LoveHate. It’s brilliant with great story lines

Liv999 · 29/03/2024 22:31

Stick with it, it really does get better and better!

magicstar1 · 29/03/2024 22:31

Love/Hate is so much better than Kin. We watched it first time around, but have rewatched a few times. I actually did all 5 seasons again a few weeks ago and it’s still holds up.

DontBeAPrickDarren · 30/03/2024 00:10

When I first watched it I had such a thing for Tommy. On several rewatches he’s just a fucking eejit. Nidge on the other hand gets weirdly sexier.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 30/03/2024 01:18

You need to persevere past the first couple of episodes, it then becomes really great. It's the closest thing to The Sopranos I've seen, obviously not in terms of setting or location, but in terms of characterisation and themes. It's well worth sticking with and I want to say thank you to those on here that recommended it - I've spent a most enjoyable few days getting into this.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 30/03/2024 01:21

Oh and for those who like Sopranos, and Love/Hate, other greats on a similar theme are Zerozerozero and Gomorrah (the series). Also Romanzo Criminale.

I've just started season 2 but I'm struggling with the dog stuff - does this go on all the way through or is it just a bit isolated to this episode? Yes I know...people getting tapped all the time but I can't see if happen to a dog, and the fighting 😫

Sorry, I don't understand. Do you mean that there is dog-fighting and cruelty to dogs?
I can handle human violence but wouldn't be able to watch dogs being mistreated BlushSad

Hi yes right at the start of S2 ep 1, it kind of sets the scene in a way, you can try to ffwd it. There's also a bit in one I just watched but I kind of had a feeling it was coming - just trust your gut if something bad is going to happen to an animal, that's what I did and looked away. Even though I know it's not real, same with the actors killing each other etc. for some reason I find the animal stuff harder.

TabbyBeast · 31/03/2024 17:11

Yeah, the first couple of series are a bit Hollyoaks Late but it definitely picks up so worth sticking with. We're always quoting it and forever saying "what's the story" in rubbish Irish accents 🤣

Tanfastic · 01/04/2024 00:13

I started it last week and couldn't get into it at first but I stuck with it and I'm really enjoying it now. Some of the scenes are very graphic so if you aren't into the gritty stuff then it won't be for you. I sometimes find myself wincing!

Oh so did I😍
And Darren.

summersundays · 03/04/2024 10:14

We gave up on Love/hate for the same reasons as everyone else, too dated, and I couldn't focus for some reason.

Kin is probably one of our favourite series so far, we can't wait for the next series, but I assume it will be a while yet.

If anyone has any other recommendations, we'd really appreciate it, we also enjoyed McMafia.

Netaporter · 03/04/2024 11:47

@summersundays I’m now hooked on ‘the godfather of Harlem’ on prime. It is awesome. Also recently watched Mr Mercedes and ‘the patient’ both on Disney. More of a thriller genre but very good

HerbalTeal · 03/04/2024 14:01

Pretty sure no more Kin is planned @summersundays

summersundays · 03/04/2024 14:38

@HerbalTeal this breaks my heart, we loved it lol

summersundays · 03/04/2024 14:39

@Netaporter thank you so much for the recommendations, that's so helpful!

You’re welcome. I watch waaaay too much tv 😂

My all time fave recently was ‘Mr Inbetween’ - an Aussie random series about a hired assassin. Written by the guy who stars in it. It Was Simply fantastic.

Very surprised at that given how popular it seems to be!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 04/04/2024 17:47

I loved Kin and tried to get the joy for Love/Hate but we're on S3 now and I'm not feeling it. I don't feel like the plot or any characters have real depth, feels like the writers just write one episode at a time and I'm so bored of the Beautiful Darren and his tortured moping about. Nig makes me snigger sometimes but that's it. Also found the swimming pool episode really peculiar somehow.

But Kin was amazing and I'm gutted there likely won't be anymore.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 04/04/2024 17:48

Watch the Young Offenders instead. Fabulous Irish wannabe gangsters Grin

And set in Cork, the true capital of Ireland 😉

foreverbasil · 06/04/2024 16:14

Couldn't get into Love/Hate at all as I couldn't get past the misogyny. Probably realistic but felt gratuitous

ZaraEarrings · 06/04/2024 16:16

I absolutely loved it when it first aired, but rewatched it about a year ago and just couldn’t take any of the characters seriously at all.

Tanfastic · 06/04/2024 22:14

Watched the whole 5 series now and I thought it was brilliant, probably enjoyed it more than Kin to be honest....so glad I didn't give up on it!

HerbalTeal · 07/04/2024 20:15

Hard agree @Tanfastic , also prefer it to Kin. I thought Kin got silly in the second series, whereas I’m missing Nidge and co 🤣
