Love/Hate ... worth a watch?

Watching the first episode after seeing many recommendations on here. I absolutely loved KIN and thought this would be similar.
However I'm struggling to deal with the dated, amateurish camera work. It's like watching Grange Hill or Prisoner Cell Block H, for those who remember Grin
Should I persevere or is it like this all the way through?
It's so far not holding a candle to KIN Confused

Yes, stick with it, it gets a lot better.

MrsPerfect12 · 23/03/2024 22:32

I ditched it after a few episodes.

JMSA · 23/03/2024 22:34

Thank you both. I couldn't finish even the first episode, but will give it another try at some point.

We've just started on Kin, a few episodes in and were just saying even though it's a lot slicker it doesn't really hold a candle to love/hate in terms of plot and script. Definitely stick with it, it was a brilliant tv show

Changeandagoodrest · 23/03/2024 22:38

Kin is much nicer. Like the cleaner more strategic "glamour" side of it all. Operating at a higher level. Love/hate is gross disgusting scummy side. I was glued when it came out but hated it. Aidan Gillan was amazing in it and so was Brian Gleason- he scared the shit out of me.

Pigeonqueen · 23/03/2024 22:50

We gave it 3 episodes and gave up. Just seems so dated compared to recent things we’ve watched and really couldn’t get into it.

JMSA · 23/03/2024 22:53

Mixed opinions for sure.

You need to get past the 4 episodes of season one - 2 and 3 are brilliant, 4 is good, 5 is back to brilliance 😀

Great username Grin

Get through the first season (the leisure centre trip - wtf?! 🤣) and then it gets better! Watched the last episode today, bereft now!

Chicca1970 · 24/03/2024 00:09

It takes a while to get going and is absolutely bonkers when it does - it’s very dark but also tragically entertaining and it has the stunning Robert Sheehan in it 👌👌

Pigeonqueen · 24/03/2024 09:48

You see I felt that it’s only become popular now because of Barry from Saltburn and Robert S being famous now, whereas when it first came out they weren’t very big and I can’t even remember hearing about it when it was first out first time around…

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/03/2024 17:05

Watching but struggling with the cheap production feel. Hoping it gets better past S1

Omg love/hate is amazing

Soooo much better than kin.

Kin is all glamour where as love/hate is the real thing. Dirty, grime and completely horrific

Fizzy orange and a pole up the arsenal with King Nidge

Netaporter · 24/03/2024 20:27

We loved it. I am bereft that Nidge is no longer in my life 😂

Loved Kin.

Would recommend Hidden Assets for anyone not wanting the grime aspect of the Dublin narcotics trade 😉

space99 · 24/03/2024 20:36

You need to persevere. Love/Hate is really, really good. I watched all 28 episodes in three weeks.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2024 09:54

Finally watched e1 last night with reflux baby over shoulder

I enjoyed it so will carry on

Def like Kin (and good to see a younger frank)

Not sure why some said e1 was Boring

Netaporter · 26/03/2024 12:39

@Blondeshavemorefun By the end of it all you’ll never shop at any of the places featured in the adverts if like me, you are too tight to pay for Ad-free ITVX 😂

i didn’t think ep 1 was boring, but by the end of it all you’ll think it was written by an entirely different team. S1 is a bit hollyoaks whereas by the end it is kin-like in quality IMO.

It never really got picked up over here at the time - Channel 5 had it briefly but it was late at night on a week day. It’s only recently that ITVX has got the whole lot. Robert Sheehan was already famous before it started.

It was certainly popular in Ireland when it first aired - more than 1 million people watched the finale on RTE, that’s 1 in 5 of the population 😁

TM1979 · 29/03/2024 15:29

Probably my favorite series ever. Was gutted when it ended. Where else would you get characters like Nidge, Fran and the lovely Darren? It’s a 100 times better than Kin.
Stick with it!

DontBeAPrickDarren · 29/03/2024 19:59

Long Live King Nidge.

We also use the line “I’ve got a bone to pick wit’ you, Nidgey” all the time. No idea why 😆

TitsInAbsentia · 29/03/2024 20:56

I've just started season 2 but I'm struggling with the dog stuff - does this go on all the way through or is it just a bit isolated to this episode? Yes I know...people getting tapped all the time but I can't see if happen to a dog, and the fighting 😫

Same here 😂

If you need a Nidge fix, he’s in ‘The beautiful game’ on Netflix with Bill Nighy. Lovely film.

A bit. Have a look at the website ‘Does the dog die’ it lists out stuff like this.
