I didn't like the husband this week either. The woman looks exhausted and shouldn't have to live in such a mess when there's been a stay at home parent!

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 02/04/2024 16:14

Really?

Three kids under 5
One of those under 1
Another with an upcoming operation and other medical stuff going on
Two parents in full-time work (ok he's on paternity leave but that's only three months presumably after she went back to work)

My house was not fit to be seen when my family was at that stage.

I'm not saying he didn't have some issues, but I empathised with him to an extent.

Greenkindness · 02/04/2024 17:33

I felt quite sorry for them in the last episode. My daughter had the same hearing issues that the boy did in that episode - it’s hard day to day, but also so many appointments to go to as well, you’re always on the run, and you’re worried. I just about kept everyone fed, in clean clothes and the house was clean-ish but I definitely had a spare room / garage full of junk. It just wasn’t a priority. Staying on top of it all can be hard for some people. I have natural hoarding tendencies and I really have to fight them.

MichaelAndEagle · 02/04/2024 21:13

Classic example of when someone has never moved house... never had to face the declutter and pack.
We moved a lot and as a consequence I travel very light!! I can pack up and go in 24 hours!!
I'm not on the run, I promise!

Rob and Dilly basically do all the work in this programme don't they!!

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 02/04/2024 22:00

😂 Yeah, they really do!

Although Stacey does what I could never do, which is getting the participants talking and facing their emotions and so on, all while being patient and sympathetic and lovely!

SleepEatSnoozeRepeat · 02/04/2024 22:19

Zack’s face at the plans Stacey had for some crafty nonsense tho 🤣🤣🤣
I liked this family, they were so lovely and had obviously never got around to chucking the stuff out. The mum and the baby doll had me sobbing, what a genuinely lovely woman.
I reckon my mum has kitchen items older than 1997. I’m going to look next time I visit, she’s a tin hoarder.
So much seemed to be left behind by the adult daughters and I think they should have at least dealt with that a few years ago.

Meredusoleil · 02/04/2024 22:20

Another lovely family tonight!

But my goodness Stacey doesn't half waste time making unnecessary things that you could buy cheaply like those cushions 😏 Although I did like the Lazy Susan, more for a spice rack than the garage/shed.

Again, I noticed they didn't show the kitchen at the end during the big reveal. Despite having seen Dilly sort through snacks earlier on in the episode.

I'm now wondering if they miss some rooms out at the end because they have run out of time to finish them and there are still boxes in there 🤔

Edited

I've been rewatching all the episodes from the start on iplayer and they definitely used to manage to show a lot more of the houses in earlier series.

Still can't get enough of this programme though. Stacey does piss about a lot but she does the hard graft with the emotional side of things and getting the families on side to part with their belongings which is no mean feat. She's also just so lovely 🥰

Iwan is lovely too but I roll my eyes so much when he's dicking about dusting with socks and scrubbing toilets with drills.

Also felt it was very out of touch for Stacey to "empathise" with the mum guilt by going on about hown she feels so guilty because "I love my kids, but I also love my job". One, Stacey didn't go back to a full time 9-5 job three months after her babies were born. And two, the mum in this family clearly didn't choose to go back to work that soon because she wanted to, she had to financially. So hearing a millionaire with a relatively flexible job she loves talk about how hard it was to leave her much older kids for far less time just felt like salt in the wound rather than "I know what you're going through".

I don't think that's entirely fair. OK, yeah, Stacey probably has more money now than the people whose houses get done. But I suspect she did feel some pressure to get back to work, especially as the partner bringing in more money in the relationship (she seems to be working more than Joe S). In telly they say you have to take jobs when they're offered and you may not have much flexibility given production schedules and what's coming available. And if you turn down too much, you may not get other opportunities. She's marketable now so she has to take advantage of it, in order to build up a nest egg for later (and for a big family), because telly careers are completely unpredictable and the money ebbs and flows.

ClonedSquare · 03/04/2024 07:56

@EverybodysALebowski - Agree to disagree, I guess. To me, this was a time for Stacey to shut up and just empathise with how awful the lady's situation was in itself, rather than try and talk about how she herself understood and had been through similar. And even if all of what you said is true, she didn’t actually say any of that, she just prattled on about how she loved her jobs. Which is tone deaf to someone who barely got time to recover from birth before she was back in a job that was much less loveable than floating around in front of a camera or selling jewellery on instagram.

(lol at her “probably” having more money than the people whose houses she’s doing up)

Newgirls · 03/04/2024 08:49

That was an emotional episode and very positive about fostering and adoption. Interesting the man had always lived there so they never decorated and made it their own.

EverybodysALebowski · 03/04/2024 08:51

Fair points @ClonedSquare and yes I should have said 'definitely' not 'probably'! I don't care much for the 'we must relate to you all and make a connection' parts of the show anyway. Give me more sorting, organisation, redesign, and fewer craft tips and such. But that's reality tv I guess.

Generally I agree. However last night I liked that Dilly made such a connection with the daughters, being adopted herself, and also saying she hopes to adopt too. Also, the connection to Joe having parents who foster. All those links made it feel quite a special makeover for the team and the family, which was lovely, I thought.

burnoutbabe · 03/04/2024 09:10

Wasn't Stacey a young single mother though in the past pre ex factor?

So she probably had been there, havibg to go back to work with a young child.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/04/2024 09:21

Yes, Stacey's oldest two aren't Joe's and Joe has a son who isn't Stacey's.

MoltenLasagne · 03/04/2024 09:50

I loved this week's episode, what an incredible family, and as the youngest daughter said at the end, they were so deserving of having something nice done for them. How lovely that the show has made it possible for them to foster now.

I really loved the family room layout that they created too - I'd have instinctively gone for bunk beds but it was actually better having the storage.

Yes, she had her first son at 17 and was a single mother, in her book Tap to Tidy she describes having nothing and how she has been spurred on in her home-making and parenting to make things the best she possibly can for her family as a result. Obviously things are very different now but she was worked so hard to get where she is. She was back doing SYLO pretty soon after the births of both her youngest.

@Bomblesofbimbledon then you’ll love the home edit. They are all about the kitchen and pantry. 😉

Ugh. I tried the Home Edit but I just can't bear the manic shout-talking from the two hosts. Everything is just too shouty and shrill 😑
