Our Flag Means Death. It's utterly brilliant and I am obsessed!

I'm sure I found a thread on this series a while ago, but now season 2 is out I've looked back and I can't find anything apart from the renewal petition.

For anyone who hasn't come across it yet, I would thoroughly recommend. It starts off as a sort of workplace comedy set on a pirate ship, sort of in the style of Ghosts, and with a similar fanbase to Good Omens. When the 2nd lead character arrives at the end of episode 3, it starts to change and it only hit me two thirds of the way through season 1 that I was actually watching a very different sort of show to the one I thought I had started watching.

From that point it's phenomenal. The attention to detail is superb. Both leads are clearly neuro diverse, from abusive backgrounds and damaged because of these. They both want what they think the other one has. It's about them discovering themselves, accepting themselves for who they really are, and healing. There is comedy, but also heartbreak and despair. The show handles these so sensitively and accurately, down to minute details, and Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby deserve every award under the sun for their work here.

I don't think I've ever obsessed about a show as much as this one. I've tried to make this not too spoilery in case some of you want to watch it, but really I just want someone to talk to about it! I've already watched it countless times and the more I rewatch the more I appreciate it. I said I was obsessed and I really am!

The show has sadly been cancelled, despite its popularity, and the producers are currently trying to see if it will be picked up by another network. I have read that they are keeping an eye on the iPlayer numbers as part of this, so I also wanted to shamelessly plug it here 😁

If any of you haven't seen it and fancy giving it a try, it grows into itself in the first season and you really need to give it at least 4 episodes (episode 4 is where the main story really starts). Its not a show I would have thought to watch myself (DD wanted me to watch it with her) but I'm so glad I have.

I don't really know what I want from this thread really. I want more people to find it, but I also want to just talk about it and obviously can't do that without more spoilers than I've already given. Help me out people!

I'm with you! I love this show so much. All the characters are great with their own quirks and weird back stories, and it's so funny and touching at the same time.

I've started saying massive aggression instead of passive aggression : )

It doesn't hurt that Taika Waititi is stupidly hot in this too.

If you haven't seen Flight of the Conchords you might want to check it out, Stede is also in that and it's got a similar quirky vibe although very different.

SoupDragon · 15/02/2024 15:14

I'm saving series 2 as I feel once I've started it will all be heading towards the end.

TriceratopsRocks · 15/02/2024 16:47

I seem to be having problems with the app this afternoon. I typed a reply, lost it and currently can't copy/paste, or quote.

@dreamingbohemian Totally agree on the super-hotness of Taika Waititi in this GrinGrinGrin. I know he does more behind the camera now, but he absolutely belongs in front of it.

And thank you for the Flight of the Conchords recommendation. I will definitely check it out once I've finished with S2. Where did you watch it? I'm not sure it's on any of the streaming services I currently have. Right now I still don't want to stop watching my favourite OFMD scenes though (I'm sure you can guess which ones)! But after that, I definitely want to check out more Rhys, more Taika, and the rest of the ensemble (who were all brilliant).

@SoupDragon I know exactly what you mean. I forced myself to take S2 slow - I watched ep1-3 three times over several days before moving on to ep4. I just wanted to savour every detail. Then I did the same with 4/5, 6/7 and then the finale. The only (mild!) criticism I have is that on first watch, episodes 7 and 8 felt a bit rushed in places. But on reflection (and lots of rewatching Grin)I think that was because I just didn't want it to end.

I'm so hoping this series is picked up. Their story is not over.

I love OFMD!!!

Flight of the conchords also brilliant. Saw them on tour years ago, and we're fantastic.Really hope more people start watching🤞

Ineedtoletoffsteam · 15/02/2024 17:18

I loved season 1 so much but I'm finding S2 darker and not so enjoyable. I will persevere though as I've loved Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby since What we do in the Shadows ❤️

Meadowy · 15/02/2024 17:21

I love this - and the best bit is that it is based on a true story!

slowlyswimming · 15/02/2024 17:25

Loved both series and hoping fervently that it gets picked up by another network.

I agree with this. I'm up to episode 3, and it is not as funny or as heartwarming as the first series.

Rufilla · 15/02/2024 17:32

My partner is absolutely obsessed with this and binge-watching season 2. I’m getting drawn in and will need to go back to the first season which passed me by.

Loved Flight of the Conchords, What We Do in the Shadows less so.

TriceratopsRocks · 15/02/2024 21:34

Yes the first 3 episodes of S2 are certainly much darker, but extremely well done and so important to the overall story.

Although some of my favourite scenes are in S2, I think my favourite whole episode is still probably the S1 finale though. That was a sublime bit of TV :)

Great to see this show getting the love! I rarely get into tv shows, but I adore this show. Obsessed maybe, as I’ve seen S1 10 times, and currently on the 3rd watch of S2. It’s definitely darker, especially the first couple of episodes, and feels rushed in places thanks to Max and their budget cuts. But overall the story goes where I wanted it to go, and goodness does it pull on the heartstrings! All episodes are on iplayer for those who can’t wait for the next episode. Keeping everything crossed that a streaming company does pick it up- it’s ratings and reviews are so good it was crazy it got cancelled

UnimaginableWindBird · 21/02/2024 06:13

I didn't realise S2 was on iPlayer. That's tonight's TV sorted!

shockthemonkey · 21/02/2024 06:17

Is this Netflix? Apple TV? Some other service?

The greatest series ever made !

100% ! Now, despite wanting to chat about this awsome show, I just need to get ready for bed before 10.30. And then I have to try to stop myself watching the live breadcasts - they are on so late tonight. But I'm not sure I'll manage that. I do like to think of others watching along when I am :)

But I'm so glad that others here love it as much as I do. @ExtraOnions Well done on getting your DH to watch. I haven't yet persuaded mine to watch more than 1 episode. He watched the first, and said it was ok but not really his thing. I did tell him he should watch at least the first 4, but he wasn't convinced and I thought I'd better stop talking about it for a while!

You have to get to Episode 4, that’s when it really kicks in. It’s a show that needs a bit of investment in the early days.

I’be watched Series 1 eps 4-10 over the last couple of days .. and hubby seems to have enjoyed it.

Everytime you watch it you see / hear something new

bigbadbarry · 11/03/2024 22:25

we Loved it too, haven’t started season 2 yet. Also flight of the concords and what we do in the shadows

CharlieSays13 · 11/03/2024 22:27

The whole cast is brilliant but Con O'Neill is utterly fantastic. Please let there be a series 3!

Edited

Definitely agree on seeing something new on every watch. And I've had several lightbulb moments only after multiple watches too.

You have seen S2, already @ExtraOnions ? Just making sure because you mention S1. I'm watching Wee John and Izzy on Instagram now btw :)

Charlie, Con O'Neill is on Instagram live right now with Wee John and Gypsy Taylor, the costume designer, if you wanted to drop in and watch?

Watched a few of S1 and just don't get it. Which is odd, as I like most of the cast. Partner said something along the lines of, I just don't understand what this is, it's not funny. Might try and keep going giving these rave reviews.

AbbeFausseMaigre · 11/03/2024 22:42

I must be missing something, I just didn't get into OFMD after absolutely loving WWDITS. Watched the first three for four episodes and just didn't enjoy it or warm to any of the characters.

Norsemen on the other hand is very darkly funny.

TriceratopsRocks · 11/03/2024 22:55

The main story of OFMD doesn't really start till episode 4, so you need to give it at least that long. But I will concede that not everyone likes the same things :) I didn't know anything about the show when I started watching, and it took me until about ep 7 to realise just what it was really all about. And then I had to go straight back and rewatch everything with my new perspective.

I will look up Norsemen too then, as I know DH is fancying that.
