I'm sure I found a thread on this series a while ago, but now season 2 is out I've looked back and I can't find anything apart from the renewal petition.

For anyone who hasn't come across it yet, I would thoroughly recommend. It starts off as a sort of workplace comedy set on a pirate ship, sort of in the style of Ghosts, and with a similar fanbase to Good Omens. When the 2nd lead character arrives at the end of episode 3, it starts to change and it only hit me two thirds of the way through season 1 that I was actually watching a very different sort of show to the one I thought I had started watching.

From that point it's phenomenal. The attention to detail is superb. Both leads are clearly neuro diverse, from abusive backgrounds and damaged because of these. They both want what they think the other one has. It's about them discovering themselves, accepting themselves for who they really are, and healing. There is comedy, but also heartbreak and despair. The show handles these so sensitively and accurately, down to minute details, and Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby deserve every award under the sun for their work here.

I don't think I've ever obsessed about a show as much as this one. I've tried to make this not too spoilery in case some of you want to watch it, but really I just want someone to talk to about it! I've already watched it countless times and the more I rewatch the more I appreciate it. I said I was obsessed and I really am!

The show has sadly been cancelled, despite its popularity, and the producers are currently trying to see if it will be picked up by another network. I have read that they are keeping an eye on the iPlayer numbers as part of this, so I also wanted to shamelessly plug it here 😁

If any of you haven't seen it and fancy giving it a try, it grows into itself in the first season and you really need to give it at least 4 episodes (episode 4 is where the main story really starts). Its not a show I would have thought to watch myself (DD wanted me to watch it with her) but I'm so glad I have.

I don't really know what I want from this thread really. I want more people to find it, but I also want to just talk about it and obviously can't do that without more spoilers than I've already given. Help me out people!

Thank you, I so wish there was a way to make it full screen and I am gutted that they weren't able to use this in the actual show. It gives me goosebumps.

I know what you mean. I love seeing all the crew that were cut in the broadcast version, but what really gets me is Stede's look at the end, after his glorious smile and wink to Ed. For me it harks back to S1 E4 where Ed is showing Stede what it feels like to be Blackbeard, with the crew's lives depending on him, and Stede is just panicking "I don't know what to do!". But this time it's all Stede's plan and the lives of the crew really do depend upon it working. He's now truly Captain, and to me that look was the weight of responsibility. He now knows what it feels like to be Blackbeard. Oh this show is so good!! There are so many parallels.

The character development is so subtle. I just can't stop watching but am aware that it could disappear from iPlayer at any time.

It's so rubbish that they had to keep those last episodes under 30 minutes. Grumble!!

David Jenkins said that it was his ambition in S2 to make Rhys Darby sexy … and he very much achieved it

He certainly did. My only other experience of watching Rhys was in Flight of the Conchords and, from that, I wouldn't have thought it was possible.

I love this bit. I guess Archie isn't seeing Stede at his best at this point....

Have we talked about our favourite other crew members yet? I love them all, but am particularly fond of Archie and Frenchie. Archie is just so funny and enthusiastic. The snake cult! Frenchie's schemes are great, love his lute playing, his thing about cats, and his S2 looks were brilliant.

I love the "The Chain" sequence at the end of S1E8. "You came back!"; "I never left." ❤ And the wink!

I love Olu and Lucius.

I watched that scene over and over when I first saw it. From Stede's look of joy when Ed first came back from CJs rowboat, to the foot touch. It's glorious. There are so many scenes in this show that just keep living in my head.

One thing that doesn’t quite add up is how different Ed is when he see’s / talks to the rabbit .. then when he is “your not a fucking mermaid” on the boat.

The sandwich thing was an improv, so Nathan wasn't expecting it.

Ed certainly did master passive aggression didn't he! Now I need to watch them being all loved up for a while - can't have grumpy Ed be the last Ed I watch today 😉

I'm gutted it's been cancelled. But a few bits did shout 'end of series' eg Izzy's death and Stede and Ed leaving to set up together. I wonder where they'd go if they did somehow manage to do the third one.

I did read an interview with David Jenkins about this. He said in S1 they were like a pair of teenagers. S2 they were more like early 20s, and S3 would have been them learning about how to have an adult relationship. It's quite a while since I read the interview though, so I hope I remembered that correctly. I think because of the budget cut/shortened runtime, they wanted to leave them in a good place after S2, just in case.
