Our Flag Means Death. It's utterly brilliant and I am obsessed!

I'm sure I found a thread on this series a while ago, but now season 2 is out I've looked back and I can't find anything apart from the renewal petition.

For anyone who hasn't come across it yet, I would thoroughly recommend. It starts off as a sort of workplace comedy set on a pirate ship, sort of in the style of Ghosts, and with a similar fanbase to Good Omens. When the 2nd lead character arrives at the end of episode 3, it starts to change and it only hit me two thirds of the way through season 1 that I was actually watching a very different sort of show to the one I thought I had started watching.

From that point it's phenomenal. The attention to detail is superb. Both leads are clearly neuro diverse, from abusive backgrounds and damaged because of these. They both want what they think the other one has. It's about them discovering themselves, accepting themselves for who they really are, and healing. There is comedy, but also heartbreak and despair. The show handles these so sensitively and accurately, down to minute details, and Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby deserve every award under the sun for their work here.

I don't think I've ever obsessed about a show as much as this one. I've tried to make this not too spoilery in case some of you want to watch it, but really I just want someone to talk to about it! I've already watched it countless times and the more I rewatch the more I appreciate it. I said I was obsessed and I really am!

The show has sadly been cancelled, despite its popularity, and the producers are currently trying to see if it will be picked up by another network. I have read that they are keeping an eye on the iPlayer numbers as part of this, so I also wanted to shamelessly plug it here 😁

If any of you haven't seen it and fancy giving it a try, it grows into itself in the first season and you really need to give it at least 4 episodes (episode 4 is where the main story really starts). Its not a show I would have thought to watch myself (DD wanted me to watch it with her) but I'm so glad I have.

I don't really know what I want from this thread really. I want more people to find it, but I also want to just talk about it and obviously can't do that without more spoilers than I've already given. Help me out people!

Started on Episode 1 again, had it on in the background whilst I was working.
Taikias accent sounds very different in Episode 3 when he is taking to Izzy

Yes I've noticed that before. And again yesterday when I watched it again :) I'm currently amending my OFMD playlist so I've gone back to the start again. Some of the music is really hard to make out when there is lots of noise. And I made my first GIF yesterday too! It was of Stede saying "Hi all" as he entered Spanish Jackiez. I was going to post it here to welcome new arrivals to the thread, but sadly I could only link to my whole Giphy page (you need a premium account and have to apply for your gif to come up in searches - bah!)

Just watched this Cameo interview with Samba Schutte (aka Roach). I'd love to see the improv scene where Ed and Stede talk about how they would run their inn.

I found this earlier .. not all the music, but it’s got some good pointers. I like the way it tells you the scene https://www.tunefind.com/show/our-flag-means-death/season-1/

Ooh thank you for that. Yes the scene pointers are great. It will be particularly helpful for sorting out the Mark Mothersbaugh original soundtrack which I know I've mixed up a bit. Some of the smaller sections of that are quite similar.

Sadly, as you say, the list isn't complete and is missing a lot of the 'classical' stuff, which is what I'm particularly interested in. e.g. episode 1 is missing the wonderful Telemann concerto for Recorder and Viola da Gamba which I only discovered through this show (I play recorder and love baroque music so I'm really happy to have found that one). There are also some gorgeous pieces missing by Mozart, Beethoven, Debussy etc. But it does explain why the Heart, Blondie and Jethro Tull pieces are in several soundtrack lists, despite me not being able to find them in any episode. That had been really confusing me because I haven't seen the season 1 trailers.

So many good fan stuff out there!

Oh. That is so emotional. I've just watched it 3 times. Thank you for posting it. I didn't know the song (and DH loves Sting!) but I suspect I'm going to be playing it quite a bit in the near future.

I'm a primary school teacher and today we are doing a pirate themed maths challenge.

Blackbeard and Stede are both name checked in it and it made me laugh.

Loved that

its so sad when Ed climbs back onto the Revenge, after Stede has left him - can’t even made eye contact with anyone, he’s so broken

I'm finding this intriguing as although I love most of the people involved, and previous shows they have made, I watched one episode and found it painfully bad. Like some sixth formers had won a competition and been allowed to make a TV show. So bad it made me cross it had been allowed! I'm wondering if I should try again but I'm genuinely not sure I can!

As we say to anyone else .. you have to get past episode 4.. in fact start at episode 4, then watch 1-3 at a later date.

(and then, when you go back to the beginning after having seen the rest, you'll probably really enjoy 1-3 as well. At least, I did 😁)

Definitely the best advice!

ExtraOnions · 21/03/2024 19:04

The first three episodes are Naive, because Steed is naive - it’s a game until he gets stabbed, and Blackbeard appears

DrMadelineMaxwell · 22/03/2024 16:00

I think my favourite moment (among many) is when they are sitting eating snake and chatting about the restaurant.

Stede's cheeky grin right at the end cracks me up. And I love that it was improvised as they went along.

The making of the mermaid scenes was an interesting watch too. I has assumed cgi was involved more than it was. But no...they really made him into a mermaid/Merman.

Chrysanthemum5 · 22/03/2024 16:30

Thank you for this thread! I had watched the first two episodes and gave up but retried it on the basis of you all loving it. And it is brilliant. I am completely in love with it now and have watched almost all of it over two days. I'm rationing the final episodes so I have something to enjoy.

It is so good, beyond what I expected.

ExtraOnions · 22/03/2024 17:32

Ahoy @Chrysanthemum5 welcome to the crew 🏴‍☠️

Glad you stuck with it … it’s well worth it, such a great series.

Favourite scene is “breakfast in bed” .. or maybe the second version of “you wear fine things well” … or anything with Izzy .. can’t choose 😂

Chrysanthemum5 · 22/03/2024 19:30

There are too many great scenes - overall I just love Ed and Stede. But also I like everyone 😃and delighted to see Madeline Sami as Archie - star of my other favourite show DeadLoch. If you've not seen it, I highly recommend it

WhiteDigestives · 22/03/2024 19:33

I loved S1, haven’t watched S2 yet but I’m excited to! Was disappointed to hear it had been cancelled.

ExtraOnions · 23/03/2024 09:32

There is a completely unsubstantiated fandom rumour .. that it’s not cancelled it’s “on hold”, and that Max are going to launch a new streaming service, in a year or so, and a S3 will be the thing they hope will bring the subscribers in

I don’t really believe it, but I hold onto some hope. I’m writing my S3 fiction in the meantime.

TriceratopsRocks · 23/03/2024 19:29

Welcome to the crew, @Chrysanthemum5 :) So glad you found us.

I'd love to read your fic, when it's done, ExtraOnions.

I'm still intending to play some more with GIFs as I enjoyed that, but am a bit too busy atm. I haven't even watched any of the show for 2 days - that's unheard of since S2 came out 😲

I think the scenes I have gone back to the most lately are the "you wear fine things well" (both of them), the lovely letter/beach reunion and Act of Grace. But that's possibly because they are beautiful snippets I can appreciate in a few minutes. If I watch Merstede I need longer. And I've been consoling myself with fanfic too.

It's an interesting rumour, @ExtraOnions. I suspect it's based on fan hope rather than anyone involved, but it makes me think of Stede's letters. They were full of hope, and one of them found it's target. A show like ours can't die in an instant...

And finally for now, here is an original song based on the show, by an artist named Chxrlotte. This and the Sting song from the YouTube edit above are the newest tracks I'm enjoying atm

The foot touch.

"You wear fine thing's well" (S1). It's Ed's face in this scene that really gets me.

But talking of winks, have you seen the full scene that they had to shorten for the final episode?

Does anybody know if there is a way of getting that instagram clip of the extended scene a bit larger? It's hard to see them all clearly.

On a PC you can click on the clip, and then click the little icon just a the top right of it that is 'picture in picture' mode. You can then stretch the new window to make it bigger. On a phone/tablet I haven't been able to change the size at all.

I'll have a look for that, Chrysanthemum. I really love Archie and I'd be keen to see Madeleine Sami in other things (apart from her little spot in WWDITS. I didn't realise until recently that Pop Pop was in that too).
