Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

Also slightly awkward that sister Julienne offered jobs to speaking pupil midwives but not to the silent ones!

Perhaps she did, but out of earshot because they didn't have the budget for them to even just say "yes please."

DMIL and I have started watching CTM from the 1st series. Oh was it better back then. The music/songs were lovely, the stories much more emotive and actually hard hitting. And of course the wonderful Chummy and Sister Evangelina.

Even Saint Bernadette had more character back then but that’s all about to change as she’s now getting it together with Dr Woodentop Turner.

I do still enjoy it but it is not as good, the Turners are awful, Sheila is just a nag all the time. Thank goodness for Nurse Crane and Mrs Higgins.

i don’t know if rules have changed but it used to be that you could say two words and still be classed as an extra and paid less. 3 or more words was acting and you would get equity minimum.

I think it's the speed of diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma that was unrealistic. Even nowadays it would take at least weeks to schedule a scan, get a biopsy, identify the cancer type and diagnose mesothelioma. Especially when she wasn't actually working directly with asbestos so they weren't even looking for that type of cancer.

I mean Fred did get over tetanus in what seemed like a week...

Pebble21uk · 13/02/2024 21:24

Just caught up... have to say I quite enjoyed the absence of Fred & Violet for a change!

LaBelleSauvage123 · 13/02/2024 23:24

We used to try to annoy the music teacher at primary school by singing Zinger Zanger instead of Sing Hosanna.

JSMill · 14/02/2024 13:53

I did think the storyline about the hymn was very silly. It's one of the easier hymns to learn, hence it's a popular one to teach children.

Very silly to start off singing in parts though.

And the printed lyric boards annoyed me. There's no way 1969 nuns would have the facilities of budget to produce those rather than hand writing on sheets of paper, or small Banda sheets shared between 2.or 3 children.

Edited

There were pots of paint by the lyrics. I think we were supposed to believe the nuns had faultless handwriting, undistinguishable from the printer that had clearly actually printed them!

Samcro · 14/02/2024 16:58

I don’t know if someone has already said, but it’s not on on. Sunday. Award show instead

NoBinturongsHereMate · 14/02/2024 17:08

I know we're supposed to believe they were handwritten, but they'd not made the slightest effort. If they can't get a runner to scrawl them with a marker pen they could at least choose one of the many, many 'handwriting' fonts preinstalled in every computer (they're not very convincing, but it would have shown a token effort).

Maerchentante · 14/02/2024 18:36

The more I think about it: On Sunday night it didn't click immediately, but the woman who abandonned her two children in the church said that she must have been pregnant when she left her violent husband. She was due any day but still had what looked like fresh bruises??? By this time she must have been away from her husband for, at least, 7-8 months. I'm no doctor, but if I saw bruises like that on someone months after they have been beaten up, I'd be very concerned.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/02/2024 19:27

@Maerchentante good point!!

OnceUponATeabreak · 14/02/2024 19:52

I noticed that too and thought it was puzzling, but then I thought it meant she had already chosen to leave him & Ireland, before discovering she was pregnant once in London. I don't know how that explains the fresh bruises though - perhaps they were meant to be scars rather than bruises?

Evenstar · 14/02/2024 20:04

I think they were meant to be scars, she said she had had stitches

InMySpareTime · 14/02/2024 20:16

I thought she was heavily pregnant by the time she managed to get away (with the excuse of going to get stitches out) and had only been in London for a few days.

MrsMitford3 · 14/02/2024 20:20

I think so many of these little niggles-Cyril qualifying and making huge decisions about children from one episode to the next, the unlikeness of May's mother having any say in her care, small things like the posters and the bruises, Trixie having a complete personality change and being careless at her job never mind sweaty matthew and mayor buckle and only one baby an episode usually delivered by St Turner say to me that there is not nearly the attention to detail and care re authenticity and the plots have all become a bit silly and soap opera ish. It was so moving and such wonderful, powerful stories.

I never cry any more-it is almost sad that it is more likely that I fall asleep or get bored.

So sad to see it run into the ground like it is

dayswithaY · 14/02/2024 21:26

You make a good point - I forgot that I used to cry every week. Not anymore, I just snort with irritation at it all.

medicalmysterymachine · 14/02/2024 21:55

The music is so sappy too - really OTT if something scary / sad is about to happen, and the overused theme at any happy moment.

Appreciate famous pop songs from the era would cost a lot to use but it's prime time TV - you'd think they could cough up for a B side of a Dusty Springfield.

catwithflowers · 14/02/2024 22:49

I half watch this on catch up now while doing the ironing 😬. I used to really love it but the storylines now are just silly. Still love Phyllis though.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/02/2024 23:04

She said they'd been revering for a while, before she ran out of money.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/02/2024 14:47

i have been watchign veryj confused,
matthew loses his job
