Peter is going to miss his flight as his tram was going in the wrong direction for the airport.

1975wasthebest · 26/12/2023 11:07

I happened to have watched this yesterday as I was at someone’s house who had it on. Yes it was as boring as hell and by contrast EastEnders was very entertaining with the resolution of the Six storyline that’s been building for almost a year. The term ‘money for old rope’ springs to mind with some characters / actors (Steve, Chesney, Tyrone). I feel a bit embarrassed for Maureen Lipman, but I guess this crap is a nice pension for her.

I gave up on Corrie back in 2017 after watching for 30+ years but have watched the odd episode since. Too many characters, boring stories, and too many episodes. The Corrie threads on here used to be buzzing. As Sarah Lancashire said a few years ago, the Coronation Street she was in doesn’t exist anymore.

What was the weird thing Roy was trying to do with the bag after Evelyn had taken the book out?

Dunno. I think perhaps we were meant to think they almost kissed. 🤔

I haven't yet caught up on all the Christmas episodes, but it has just struck me on watching just now that Carla really is a man's woman. She's super nice to the men in her life (Peter, Ryan, Roy, etc) but doesn't seem to have any time for women at all. Or have any friends for that matter!

Jitterybugs · 26/12/2023 14:15

So the Baileys are still under the impression that Ed was mugged by an intruder for all their Christmas presents and nobody bought the turkey. They accept a neighbourly invitation to go to Speed Daal for Christmas food leftovers with Debbie Webster tagging along. The owner of the luxury hotel who didn’t think to invite them there to rustle up a Christmas dinner.

Getupat8amnow · 26/12/2023 14:22

For the first time in decades Coronation Street has dropped out of the Christmas Day most watched programmes list. I am not surprised, I watched the Christmas Day episode and it was boring rubbish.

ITV need to give the programme a complete overhaul, starting with looking back at the years it was great - deep characterisation, scenes of daily life mixed in with longer storylines that develop over time and then have resolution, characters that interact with each other, a central hub that is busy and has characters in it that are not in the main storyline (e.g. Sally and Tim in the background while Steve and Tracey are chatting etc), not altering characters personalities to fit a storyline, including some humour, less of the need for the “If you have been affected by……” and “This programme contains scenes some viewers might find …….” They need to stop repeating storylines especially drug related ones, I am bored stiff of drug based storylines. Tyrone’s mum (I forget her name) with her drug habit but trying to kick it is a rehash of Abi’s drug user made good storyline.

Coronation Street also needs a character clear out/sort out. It needs families with strong bonds with each other who make strong bonds to other members of the community. What do the characters Stu and Yasmine actually bring to the drama, they are flat with no depth so the audience doesn’t care and they are boring so the story lines are boring. I’m just using them as examples. The same can be said for at least half the characters. It’s not the actors fault, it’s the material they have to work with

Coronation Street has lost its way. The writers need to change ASAP. Myself and others have been saying this for at least two years on these threads. I wish ITV would take notice. Come on ITV, save this once great programme.

Couldn't agree more @Getupat8amnow

I did like the Evelyn - Roy book scene. Such good, understated acting.

1975wasthebest · 26/12/2023 16:46

Cutting the amount of episodes would be a step forward as well but it won’t happen because of the advertising revenue that comes to ITV. I noticed just after I stopped watching in late 2017 that the quality of the writing and acting couldn’t sustain six episodes a week (it went to six that September). I see that’s kind of continued but now in three hour long episodes per week.

MichaelAndEagle · 26/12/2023 17:35

When you put it head to head with eastenders it becomes really stark.
I know EE isn't everyone's cup of tea but corrie basically hasn't even tried to have an Xmas episode.
The EE Xmas storyline had us all talking all year over on those threads.

I agree with everything said upthread about corrie, I really want to love it again.
The last thing I thought they did really well was the storyline around Seb's murder.

JMSA · 26/12/2023 18:17

Love it or loathe it, Eastenders knows how to NAIL a Christmas Day special 👌
The Coronation Street equivalent was spectacularly shite by comparison. I mean, it felt in every way like a normal episode.

JMSA · 26/12/2023 18:19

Also, Abbie is looking great (or rather the actress who plays her!) but I hope she will now leave her face alone and not overdo the work done to it.

LizzieFromTheForest · 26/12/2023 18:22

Honeyroar · 25/12/2023 19:45

Thank goodness that was only half an hour, because it was dreadful!!

I agree. Shame really, that Corrie has gone downhill so much lately.

I am sick to DEATH of Billy and Paul How many more times do we need to see them naked, and post-fuck?

Sick of Daisy's face, and her constant angsty look. And Carla's face is annoying too. She looks so strange these days. She has had so much work done. Gemma looks more grim every time I see her. Why the F does she dress so dreadfully? Abi did look nice!

I HATE the Baileys. Hmm Ed's face is boiling my piss.

As a pp said, Corrie didn't even crack the top 10 in the most watched TV programmes over the Christmas break. The King's Speech had the highest amount of viewers. HA HA stitch that anti-Royalists! Grin

JadeSeahorse · 21/12/2023 13:20

Is it just me feeling really uncomfortable with the Ed storyline?

My God, it must be horrendous living with a compulsive gambler. 😥. Just shows what an awful disease this really is.

Also I am literally raging over Jenny and Daisy stealing the Underworld money.
I really hope they are found out, go to jail and then the pub reverts back to Carla and co. as, if I recall, most of the staff own a small percentage of the factory. 😡

Im just catching up & feel the same about Jenny & Daisy stealing the money.

Pinenu · 26/12/2023 18:39

It’s like the writers forgot to do a Christmas episode, it was bizarrely dull.

I know in the past Corrie hasn’t always gone in for the explosive drama for the festive period, sometimes just having more of a playful Christmas hour long episode. But what on earth was this year’s supposed to be?!

Someone’s buying a pub and Peter has been coming and going for years 🤷‍♀️

JMSA · 26/12/2023 18:47

@theconfidenceofwho

My dad was a gambler. He would regularly steal money from my bank account when I was still at high school and working part-time.
I adore the man but it's a dreadful affliction on the family. It cost him his marriage to my mum, as compulsive lying is part & package.
My dad attends and helps run AA and GA. He's old school but the young men at his groups are a different kettle of fish, as it's now cocaine that's rife amongst them Sad

theconfidenceofwho · 26/12/2023 18:49

So sorry you had to grow up with that @JMSA - hope you (& he) have found peace as adults.

Yulelaff · 26/12/2023 19:34

Why do they have to have a warning at the start of every single episode? “Tonight’s episode contains emotionally upsetting scenes”. It’s only Peter Barlow going, not a world disaster.

NeelyOHara1 · 26/12/2023 19:37

I discovered that ITVX has a few 'best of' old Coronation Street Christmas episodes from the 1960's onwards that are available to watch atm. A treat for Corrie fans but the quality difference is quite glaring...

AutumnCrow · 26/12/2023 19:52

I hate it when the continuity announcer does a big spoiler as the programme is coming on. Just shut up about plotlines you annoying muppet. Just say your 'emotional distress' nonsense and bugger off.

Lorrymum · 26/12/2023 19:54

The Peter and Carla stuff is nonsense. He is only going on a glorified holiday to Spain. The whole "we shouldn't communicate" conversation, aargh!!
