Anyone watch yesterday's?
Watching now. The woman at the start making the 999 call sounds so calm!
When she's got someone outside her flat with this massive gun!

It says a lot for Dennison that in his statement read by his solicitor (and didn't the solicitor look shocked at the video footage) that he'd been drinking (I think he said JD and coke) from around 7.30 until midnight, and after being upset at the incident in the pub, "decided to go for a drive". So clearly having no regard for drink/driving and the potential there to kill/maim other people.

I think that Papworth saw his daughter as his trump card, thinking that the police would release him so that she wasn't left without a mother and a father. I don't buy the "he seems like a nice bloke" for one minute.

I do feel sorry for the parents who were holding their baby shower in the pub that night. Nothing they did caused all the mayhem that ensued, but their memory of their baby's shower will forever be tainted by it.

CormorantStrikesBack · 10/01/2024 20:16

I feel sorry for Dennisons daughter. Into foster care, think she was a teen as well. So she will soon be slung out and having to make her own way in the world with no support.

TitsInAbsentia · 10/01/2024 21:07

Some interesting reading on facebook, lots of other names thrown around, other people in the dock who weren't mentioned on the programme. Papworth wasn't allowed near his daughter for years, was only when her mother was killed that he ended up with custody (allegedly daughter now living with someone else who they don't speak highly of). Drug dealing from the pub. Some woman helping Bennison look for evidence around the car. Just all sorts.

But @Triflelife / they charged him with something - but then abandoned the charge. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been put on remand for 3 months. I think he was genuinely shocked he was arrested for murder and I think also shocked by Papworth running over Adam.

I think his shock at the CCTV footage was genuine. Looks like all of them had history though. And if Nick Papworth really loved his daughter, why behave in a way that's likely to leave her in foster care.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/01/2024 22:08

What happened to the girls mum?

Vinculum · 10/01/2024 22:23

The whole thing was utterly shocking but I was quite confused too - I didn’t grasp who was actually driving the car. Can that newspaper report really have it right that Papworth was only 31? Surely a typo, especially as he had a teenage daughter.

Bennison may have written that heartfelt letter to his grandparents but what was that terrifying-looking gun doing amongst his possessions when his place was searched? I despair of the choices made by these very young men that leave a trail of ruined lives behind them, and destroy their own lives into the bargain.

Turkeyhen · 10/01/2024 22:34

I love this show, but I wish they would go into even more detail. Even as two parter this one felt rushed and left some things unclear. There’s a similar show on bbc iplayer called Murder Case that really went into great detail, highly recommended.

NameChangeAsICouldBeOverReacting · 10/01/2024 22:38

this was truly shocking and so violent! I was also confused on who did what, but this article from the Bedfordshire police explains the attack really well.

https://www.beds.police.uk/news/bedfordshire/news/2023/08-august/murderers-sentenced-to-life-in-prison-for-houghton-regis-triple-stabbing/

Triflelife · 10/01/2024 22:48

@Turkeyhen oh thank you I’ll try and watch that, yes there seems to have been a lot left out especially in light of what @TitsInAbsentia has said! Seems like the police did think Curtis Long was being rallied to take part in whatever attack was planned but he arrived late, just as well for him.

Triflelife · 10/01/2024 22:51

@NameChangeAsICouldBeOverReacting blimey have just read the article. Hardly just a ‘moment’ of madness then as it reads that they looked for the victims and attempted to run them over multiple times, regrouped at the pub and then launched another attempt. WTAF

qazxc · 10/01/2024 23:00

Silver BMW didn't run over anyone, it was driven by Anthony, the bloke doing the stabbing. Forensics found blood in areas like drivers door handle because it was on his hands when he got back in car.
Anthony said he found the knife when others dropped it, because if he admitted bringing the knife it would affect his self defence story and open him up to more charges/ harsher sentence.
Papworth was driving the car that run over Pat.
I would imagine both men were known to police as they showed mug shots, an arrest video and they were " known associates ".
The female custody officer would be better off if she remained more detached.

Turkeyhen · 10/01/2024 23:05

Ah, I thought the car that ran over Pat looked like the BMW, but the picture quality of the CCTV wasn’t great so it was difficult to tell. The BMW had been smashed up, which seemed to corroborate Anthony’s account - had it also been set on fire? Did the police confiscate and examine the VW as well?

purpleme12 · 10/01/2024 23:06

@qazxc I thought the female person was being how she was to try get people to open up to her. Perhaps it works sometimes

NameChangeAsICouldBeOverReacting · 10/01/2024 23:19

@Triflelife the article makes this horrible crime even worse, which I didn’t think would be possible. That, plus the comments on FB if true. So much hurt and loss over something so stupid.

SweetPalOMine · 10/01/2024 23:27

So horrific and sad. That custody desk sergeant who thought Papworth was a decent bloke - 'mate, if I could bail you, you know I would, yeah?' - seems to be in the wrong job.

He was probably trying to avoid getting punched

purpleme12 · 10/01/2024 23:54

I thought he was just thinking how sad the daughter doesn't have a parent at that moment and that was what he was really referring to

OP posts:
ThePure · 11/01/2024 01:43

Papworth is a total psychopath who was playing the female custody sargeant like a fiddle. He is hardly dad of the year. I wager his daughter will be better off without him

Bennison came across as very dim but clearly he is a dangerous person as the level of violence he engaged in was incredible. Also he has a gun under his bed but expects it to be believable that he wasn't carrying the knife. The fugitive team had footage of him being arrested for something else the previous year so clearly has previous.

I can't feel that sorry for Curtis Long either. He was obviously there looking to get involved. He wasn't innocently driving past. He could presumably have exonerated himself sooner if he had been willing to say who did run over the victim but was too in thrall to Papworth to say so. That's my interpretation of the interaction in the shower anyway.

Surely that's exactly what you would say, when you are trying to keep someone calm and prevent any more potential violence. Let them think you are on their side.

qazxc · 11/01/2024 09:02

I can understand pretending to be sympathetic to make an interview more productive or keep things calm, but that's not what she was doing. She wasn't going to.interview him, she was making the comments when he was away from the desk.
I understand that she probably didn't see the footage, and was only going from what she saw of Papworth. That nobody is all good or all bad, that even the worse offenders will probably have a couple of good traits, but she shouldn't be swayed she should keep her opinions to herself and remain polite, professional and emotionally detached from the situation so that she doesn't fall prey to manipulation or get sucked into arguments or drama.
Part of me wondered if one of the reasons Papworth was showing her his nice side was because of his experience with lesser charges he thought she would be making the decision whether to bail him or not.
I think.that the pub were probably glad he didn't get bail, he seemed surprised and angry that the police had acquired that footage. I think that they didn't realise that the community would be so disgusted at their actions and wouldn't care about " being a grass".

There were 2 cars involved.
The silver BMW was recovered and that's where they found blood around door handle. It was smashed up but the police said that Anthony left the pub, was driving erratically trying to find Mason and Pat. He tried to run them over and smashed his car up on road sign and parked cars. That when Adam came out of his mother's and they all escaped down an alleyway. Anthony then went back to the pub ( presumably to.let Papworth know where they were) and that's when the 2 cars set off out of the carpark, find the group. Anthony stabs 3 people, Pat is left in the road injured, Papworth runs him over with his VW that is later found burnt out.

Turkeyhen · 11/01/2024 09:11

@qazxc thanks for that, I must have missed a bit (making tea in the ad break) hence the confusion about the cars.

migmogmash · 11/01/2024 11:59

@CormorantStrikesBack I suspect he wanted the knife as he knew he'd be going on remand, assuming to Bedford prison. If someone in there knew the men killed and tried to retaliate, then he's got a weapon.
I doubt he'd have used it on the police. There's nothing to gain there.

cheezncrackers · 11/01/2024 12:37

What confused me was that Anthony Bennison was driving a silver BMW and Curtis Long was also driving a silver BMW, so there were two vehicles of the same type involved in one way or another. That clearly confused the police too in the early stages, as they were trying to figure out who was driving what, but it was never spelled out to the TV audience. There was so much more to this case than was shown - it really should've been a 3-parter as it felt really rushed and there were lots of loose ends.

CormorantStrikesBack · 11/01/2024 12:41

That does make more sense but surely you get searched thoroughly on entry to prison? Like a strip search, part your arse cheeks search? He can't hide a knife that well?

qazxc · 11/01/2024 12:49

I don't necessarily think that they were trying to smuggle a knife in, maybe the mate just went grabbed a load of clothes and shoes not realising that the knife was there. I am assuming that he would carry this knife as a weapon as most people do not store knives in their shoes. It's unlikely he would gave been able to smuggle a knife into prison. It was found pretty quickly.
