Anyone watch yesterday's?
Watching now. The woman at the start making the 999 call sounds so calm!
When she's got someone outside her flat with this massive gun!

I really admire the camera work in this programme - the way it lingers on the faces of the accused men so you can almost see their emotions and thought processes as the interviews carry on.

Hels20 · 09/01/2024 09:23

Gosh - that’s awful
about the mother of Papworth’s child being murdered. I think it was an excellent example of how things can just so quickly escalate - 30 seconds of madness and so many lives ruined.

Wintom · 09/01/2024 18:16

The chap who spent 3 months on remand... What was he charged with to be remanded? I wonder if they were investigating him for aiding and abetting the perpetrator. Who drove the perpetrator away from the burnt out vehicle? It will make interesting viewing tonight to see how this ends up.

Sidge · 09/01/2024 19:43

Just watched last nights. The violence and brutality were shocking. It escalated so quickly!

There are some seriously scary men walking around out there.

Papworth really irritated me when he said he was all his daughter had got. Why then is he out till one in the morning drunk and fighting?

I wondered how safe police feel in an interview room. I thought he was really scary. I suppose having a solicitor there helps but I wondered whether there was any extra security.

I thought this. Did he say how old his daughter was?
Also he said “ bail me into my daughter’s custody” I thought you’re the parent, she’s a child — surely you should have thought of her before you went out drinking, driving and killing people ( if he’s found guilty)

charliecoopershair · 09/01/2024 20:27

I thought they said she was a teenager.

Hels20 · 09/01/2024 20:28

Daughter was a teenager.

As for why guy got released after 3 months being on remand - I wondered if they initially charged him with conspiracy to murder and then realised they didn’t have enough evidence.

dapsnotplimsolls · 09/01/2024 20:34

I've read that he was in one of the cars, I think it was the silver BMW.

Triflelife · 09/01/2024 21:48

So many lives ruined. One of the victims and his daughter in the video at the end nearly brought me to tears. And the poor guy who wasn’t even involved but came out of his house to help his friends. What an absolute waste.

Hels20 · 09/01/2024 22:13

I know@Triflelife - that poor man (Adam I think his name was) who came out to see what the commotion was. Now dead.

I did think that both perpetrators utterly regretted their actions and could see that they had had a moment of madness - particularly Anthony who was shaking throughout the interview. What an absolutely senseless attack. Anthony obviously wasn’t a hardened criminal - I couldn’t believe he wasn’t using a burner phone.

i also thought about Papworth’s teenage daughter - I wonder if she watched the programme or what she now thinks of her Dad. It was an interesting comment that the custody officer made at one point about how she thought he was a nice bloke or something to that effect.

determinedtomakethiswork · 09/01/2024 22:18

I would like to know what previous convictions they all had. That wasn't mentioned at all though the police seem to recognise some of them. There's no point painting a real innocent picture of yourself when you have a massive history.

I agree, they usually say if they've got previous convictions. I'd be amazed if neither of these 2 had any.

Conniethecatapillar · 09/01/2024 22:27

I watched it too, I wondered why the guy who was on the run didn't go further than Luton. Surely he knew he'd be caught eventually? I liked the young copper he seemed pretty decent. The violence was really shocking and so sad.

Turkeyhen · 09/01/2024 22:31

Did the police establish which of the two was actually driving the silver BMW when Pat was run over? It was so brutal and shocking.

Hohofortherobbers · 09/01/2024 22:35

How did they even think that guy Curtis Long was involved? Was it just because he had phone calls with Papworth after the incident. Who did the knife belong to? Is it true that the victims had it and dropped it? How do they decide if a sentence must be served in its entirity before parole is considered? It seemed to end quickly without answering a lot of questions.

purpleme12 · 09/01/2024 22:36

All good questions! Also, whose blood was on/in the car? I guess one of the victims but surprised that was mentioned but the results of forensic testing wasn’t mentioned?

Triflelife · 09/01/2024 22:48

@Hohofortherobbers i think they had cctv of Curtis’ car on the road and then turning and going back towards the violence. That paired with the phone calls from Papworth. They seemed to analyse his driving though and thought his driving didn’t fit with him being involved. I thought his reaction when he was arrested for murder seemed genuine though and he seemed shocked.

i liked the young DC? too. Was interesting what he was saying about you’re never going to get an emotional response from certain people and commented that Papworth was smirking in the corridor.

His poor daughter, no Mum and now in foster care. I hope things work out for her.

Hels20 · 09/01/2024 22:49

Yes - the knife was never really explained. Although I think that Anthony brought it. Also / couldn’t believe his mate brought him clothes and there was a knife hidden in the shoe - obviously couldn’t prove the friend had planted it there.

They would serve the full 34 or 38 years / it’s a life sentence and that is the minimum term they will serve. A life sentence for murder starts with a minimum term of 15 years / then it increases I think to minimum of 30 years if a gun is used. I think it is 25 years if a knife is used. The guidelines are quite strict. But they won’t be eligible for parole until 34 or 38 years.

manslaughter is different / think you get released halfway or two thirds through minimum sentence.

Triflelife · 09/01/2024 22:49

@Hels20 i thought this too surely a very basic mistake to be on the run but ordering takeaway using your usual number!

Hels20 · 09/01/2024 22:50

But @Triflelife / they charged him with something - but then abandoned the charge. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been put on remand for 3 months. I think he was genuinely shocked he was arrested for murder and I think also shocked by Papworth running over Adam.

Turkeyhen · 09/01/2024 22:52

Would Curtis Long have been on remand on a conspiracy charge?

TheKnittedCharacter · 09/01/2024 22:54

This is one of the best things on TV. Full of admiration for the police, but ultimately it was a sad and depressing watch.

Hels20 · 09/01/2024 22:55

Yes @Turkeyhen - conspiracy to murder. Absolutely. I worked in a prison for a bit - definitely.

Hels20 · 09/01/2024 23:02

This explains who was originally charged. On iTV news Anglia.
