Anyone watch yesterday's?
Watching now. The woman at the start making the 999 call sounds so calm!
When she's got someone outside her flat with this massive gun!

@Hels20 oh so he was originally charged with murder! I didn’t pick up on that at all as wouldn’t have thought the phone calls and his car being in the vicinity would’ve been enough. Are the timelines in the tv show very different to real life then

genesis92 · 09/01/2024 23:09

So was Papworth the guy who actually ran Pat over? I feel like that wasn't made clear

Hels20 · 09/01/2024 23:13

The murders happened on 12 November - they were brought to court on 22 November 2022. Trial was in August 2023.

purpleme12 · 09/01/2024 23:15

Wow I've just watched yesterday's.
Curtis spent 3 months in prison on remand for a crime he didn't commit it said!
Did they just bring him in because his car was on the road?
Bit shocked that he spent 3 months there and did nothing wrong

purpleme12 · 09/01/2024 23:15

Can see now why he said what he did about the police earlier in the show

Conniethecatapillar · 09/01/2024 23:17

I'm also confused about who was the one driving and where the knife came from. Seems like a few things were left out.

Turkeyhen · 09/01/2024 23:21

Hels20 · 09/01/2024 23:02

This explains who was originally charged. On iTV news Anglia.

The younger bloke who wrote the letter to his grandparents (Anthony?) isn’t mentioned in that article and the older bloke in the article didn’t appear in the programme. Must’ve been a report from early on in the investigation?

I'm surprised you find it surprising- the phone calls from Papworth to Curtis whilst they were heading out after the victims, you believe at that time he was talking about watching football as he claimed? Papworth was steaming angry, it doesn't make sense.
I imagine Papworth was phoning around to rally some troops to fight and Curtis was there to join him or Curtis could see something bad was about to happen and was there to try and de-escalate. Either way he's gotten into his car and driven down to the fight following a call from Papworth- I think it was reasonable of the police to include him as a co-conspirator in the early investigation. I'm not sure I believe that he didn't witness anything or that he didn't know the wounded men were there and needing help.

diggermama · 10/01/2024 06:21

I also felt there were unanswered questions, or things that didn’t quite add up and weren’t explained.

The one that really stumped me was how PC Plod and PC Nod went politely knocking for Bennison (after the failed McDonalds mission) yet for his actual arrest they used an ARMED balaclava clad SWAT team. He was either incredibly dangerous or he wasn’t?! Which one is it!

ToMeToYouAndBack · 10/01/2024 07:02

Hohofortherobbers · 09/01/2024 22:35

How did they even think that guy Curtis Long was involved? Was it just because he had phone calls with Papworth after the incident. Who did the knife belong to? Is it true that the victims had it and dropped it? How do they decide if a sentence must be served in its entirity before parole is considered? It seemed to end quickly without answering a lot of questions.

It's considered Joint Enterprise if there were calls between the two parties. Even if Curtis hadn't even left his house, it would have been implied he 'took part' because of the phone calls between them.

1AngelicFruitCake · 10/01/2024 07:05

So sad about Papworth’s daughter.

I didn’t feel enough was said about the second murder victim. So sad for him that he ended up involved.

hattie43 · 10/01/2024 07:47

I'm glad they got proper long sentences, dangerous men off the streets

Hels20 · 10/01/2024 08:10

Their sentences were correct - but I put this in the same bracket as Alice Wood who was recently convicted of murdering her boyfriend by mowing him down with her car. Especially Anthony Benniston. Total madness - that I expect if they were sober - they would never have done in a million years. That I expect they are all sitting around in their cells - what on earth did I do? Why?

Triflelife · 10/01/2024 10:01

Nick Papworth seemed to be grinning delighted seeing himself on the cctv in the pub playing pool despite being in custody for murder. I’m sure I’ve seen this before when the suspect is almost narcissistic when seeing themselves in footage it’s very odd.
@hattie43 absolutely terrifying when an even minor altercation with these people could lead to that

youdrivemeupthewall · 10/01/2024 11:46

I find this series both interesting and disturbing. These main suspects probably do have a police record but it wasn't made clear.
The thing that gets me is how they both get upset by the thought of their loved ones suffering - his daughter, the other's grandparents - but they go out and do these terrible things to other people. That stabbing was vicious and nothing to do with self defence. Is it all 'heat of the moment' stuff? It takes some effort to rally your mates, get the car etc.
The detective summed it up well at one point - a petty dispute or 'disrespect' in a pub escalates to multiple murder because angry, testosterone loaded men can't regulate themselves. Tragic.

cheezncrackers · 10/01/2024 11:51

It was an interesting comment that the custody officer made at one point about how she thought he was a nice bloke or something to that effect.

I thought she was very naive and making a comment like that on camera was very ill-advised. Papworth came across as manipulative and sociopathic to me. His complete lack of empathy, his fake remorse and then smirking and grinning as soon as he got out of the interview room were very telling. The custody sergeant was clearly completely taken in. He was only remorseful for himself - he didn't give a shit that two men were dead. I was glad and surprised to see that he went down for 34 years when he wasn't the one wielding the knife, but he was clearly the one directing operations and getting his fall guy Anthony to do his dirty work. Papworth was a seriously nasty piece of work and his sentence reflected that.

It really was quite worrying, let's hope she's new at the job and learns fast.

@Hels20 i thought this too surely a very basic mistake to be on the run but ordering takeaway using your usual number!

He clearly wasn't the sharpest tool in the box!

DandelionPockets · 10/01/2024 15:02

Gosh just watched that latest case. Those poor poor men who lost their lives and those that witnessed what happened.

Papworth was the one driving the car that ran over Pat, someone asked further up the thread. Very pleased to see the sentence that he and Bennison were given. Just terrifying that people like that exist in society.

purpleme12 · 10/01/2024 18:40

A knife in the shoe his mate was bringing in for him!

purpleme12 · 10/01/2024 18:42

Oh they let the mate go. I was thinking how do they know he knew it was in there

Yeah I agree, when they reading out statements Papworths eyes had such hatred in them as soon as Masons name was mentioned.

I wondered this too! Initially thought maybe for self harm but doubt a friend would facilitate that.

trevthecat · 10/01/2024 19:44

I watched both today. I lived in Houghton Regis as a teen, just round the corner from where it happened. Absolutely horrific.
