Well Josh was robbed I thought

OP posts:

I felt like the were rounding up Matty for the win - and down playing Josh. As has been said, Matty is simply more marketable.

Sadly Dan had a mare, sadly.

I like Paul Hollywood less and less every episode. And I didn't like him much to start with.

Tigresswoods · 28/11/2023 21:49

I'm actually outraged. Matty is lovely but that was not a winning performance.

Josh was consistently good through out. My theory is he's a bit dull & won't sell books. For example, Matty is now engaged to his beautiful girlfriend. Josh won an award for his giant marrow.

I'm disappointed Channel 4. Very disappointed.

I agree. I think this now proves this show is not all about the bake.

TheChosenTwo · 28/11/2023 21:51

Delighted with the result, although think Josh was stitched up!
Matty and Dan were our favourites although dan screwed up consistently so we never thought he’d win.
Matty is definitely more marketable than Josh who seemed very quiet and lacking a bit in personality/fun, it’s not meant to be a popularity contest though!!

TheMadGardener · 28/11/2023 21:52

Happy for Matty, seems a lovely guy, but surprised Josh didn't win. Although Josh's showstopper did look messy, not like his usual very high standard of decoration, maybe he just ran out of time to make it look better. But the other two showstoppers also looked messy, although Matty's apparently tasted amazing. I thought Paul was very harsh saying Josh's cake was boring, you could see he was crushed about that.

However on the whole I don't have a problem with Matty winning. All the bakers seem to have a really lovely relationship.

Maireas · 28/11/2023 21:53

That was an underwhelming final. Nothing really outstanding.
I think they're all good bakers, but Josh had that bit extra.

AIstolemylunch · 28/11/2023 21:53

As much as I really liked Matty and thought he improved massively, Josh was robbed there.

Emmacb82 · 28/11/2023 21:55

Isn’t the whole point of bake off though that they are judged week by week and not on past bakes? I did think Josh would win and I thought Paul’s comments to him after the showstopper were a bit harsh but I guess going on previous bakes they were expecting a lot more from him. A very enjoyable series though.

MrsScrubbingbrush · 28/11/2023 21:58

Josh was robbed 😩

How can anyone who serves up raw lardy cake win. I used to work in a bakery where they made it and it's delicious but not when it's raw!

Big protest in the Scrubbingbrush household as both DDs wanted Josh to win.

MathsFiend · 28/11/2023 22:01

Yeah, definitely felt like they thought Matty would play out better on the chat shows etc. Josh has been consistently good all season. So doesn’t feel like it’s been judged on the bakes at all

Exactly! How can someone who serves up raw cake in the final actually win!

I'd LOVE if they announced Hollywood wouldn't be returning for the next series. He's a charmless oaf.

Scruffington · 28/11/2023 22:03

although not as bad as Gregg bloody Wallace on Masterchef.

no one's as bad as bloody Gregggggg

Maireas · 28/11/2023 22:03

I agree, @Scruffington . He has no finesse.

BishyBarnyBee · 28/11/2023 22:31

That wasn't Josh at his best, though. The technical never counts for much in the judging. And when we've questioned decisions before, it's always been on flavour, which we can't judge.

Matty was very, very lucky, but I suspect he did just deserve it on the day. He is undoubtedly very telegenic, and they do love a "journey", but I don't think that decides the winner. There have been quite a few slightly boring, predictable winners, and the lovely Liam went out well before the final, then did manage to make a TV career anyway.

BishyBarnyBee · 28/11/2023 22:34

I loved the bit where your mum talked about Dan and his sport, CheshireCat.
I think you could see in his lovely calm and competent manner that he has had success and failure before, in the way sportspeople do, and took both in his stride. Up to this week when he did seem rattled. Amazing success for him overall though, and who knows what it will open up for him. Loved seeing him with the kids, too.

Mistressofnone · 28/11/2023 22:36

I was pleased Matty won. Josh seemed a little complacent and Matty tried to take on board the feedback, improving every week. I think he hid how seriously he was taking it, given his comment about being difficult to live with for the past 10 weeks. His flavour ideas were always good too.

Enjoyed this series!

Laughing at Paul Hollywood comment - the charmless oaf (read it as charmless loaf!)

Peepshowcreepshow · 28/11/2023 22:59

Josh deserved to win. I felt this series was disappointing overall - some good bakers, but none really wowed me. Josh has been consistently quite good, but that is damning with faint praise. I thought Matty should have gone in Week 1 due to the awful mess he made of buttercream; he clearly improved but he was never incredible in the way they are some years.

Zampa · 28/11/2023 23:07

I'm sure that in the final episode the judges used to run through all the finalists' previous bakes and judged it on overall performance, not just on the final bake.

Matty may have done the best on the day but Josh was the most consistent performer.

dotdotdotdash · 28/11/2023 23:07

I thought Josh was the rightful winner. Turns out GBBO is a popularity contest!

It was so obvious.

Lovely to see your Mum on the telly @cheshirecatssmile

And this.

Nitesaredrawinin · 29/11/2023 00:21

Totally gobsmacked that Josh didn’t win. He won both the bakes before, he was obviously better. No contest really, and all the showstoppers were crap anyway. So the judges chose someone who had lost the previous two rounds aswell. Well done them!!

StrawberryJellyBelly · 29/11/2023 04:01

I’m very pleased for Matty. He won fair and squarely on the day.

With a raw lardy cake and a falling over show stopper? If that’s the best baker then the show really is in trouble!

Maireas · 29/11/2023 07:24

Yes, I thought it was a disappointing final. Nothing great.
