I tried saying the same on r/bakeoff, but they all bullied me into silence. They didn't like that I gave them a 'spoiler' (I didn't realise that was a rule of the sub.. Cause my life doesn't revolve around reddit!) Imagine not wanting to see spoilers and then going on the forum that discusses the show... Just after the result was announced. Ridiculous. But that's bullies for you!
Just wanted to chime in and say that I totally agree. In other years, the stitch-ups were less obvious... Or just down to a poor judging process; for example, I think Stephen should've won in 2017. Sophie was amazing, but Stephen was exceptional. He ran out of steam at the end sadly. Sophie won with a bake that was as amazing as Stephen's in Week 2-4. She was great at the end, he was great at the start.
However, it's just egregious now: Tasha or Josh should've won this year. They both received a standing ovation for their bakes from the judges; Josh was consistently 8-9/10, and Tasha had some 9-10/10's several times. 2019 was even worse: Steph should've won that fair and square... Star baker 4 times, whereas David didn't get that once!
I know it's just a TV show, but it's sad to see amazingly talented people passed over for someone who's chummiest with the judges/team. I guess I've felt like that has happened to me many times, so I empathise. I think it's Paul's personality that makes me so passionately against it - people say he puts on this persona for Bake Off, but I have to disagree; when he went to America for his eponymously-named TV show, he was embarrassingly rude "would you serve this tea to the Queen of England?!" You're not a monarch, Paul! lol.
I'll conclude with this: it would be more logical to judge the winner over the entire process. They have done this inconsistently (e.g. the year Rahul won, they considered the entire season. They said so explicitly. I think Rahul deserved to win, even though I much prefer Kim-Joy's personality). Additionally, the winner isn't necessarily the one who goes on to do the best: Liam didn't win, but he's gone on to co-present Bake Off: The Professionals with Tom Allen. Lastly, if they're going to base it all on personality, then Saku should've won!
That is all lol
