Is anyone else looking forward to this? The first part of the final season is on Netflix from 16th November (four episodes), and the second part (six episodes) from 14th December.

I thought the previous series was a bit boring so I'm hoping for more drama this time round.

I thought the scene where Mohammed Al Fayed identified Dodis body was very moving. Very well acted
Agreed. Salim Daw was excellent in this.
I don't believe Mohammed Al Fayed had anything to do with paparazzo shots though and I'm glad he's not alive to see this.

Autieangel · 19/11/2023 12:35

I enjoyed it, I actually preferred it to the last season. This was the first season where I actually remember the events in real time.

The ghosts were ridiculous and spoilt it for me.

I found the proposal attempt Interesting other than Mohammed Al Fyeds claims theres never been any suggestion that the relationship was serious.

I just don't find Dominic West's voice convincing. It's not posh enough. Neither is imelda. Although she did the tv broadcast very well

They were all much posher in the earlier seasons: Claire foy, matt smith, josh o'connor.

But then the Queen's accent itself changed an awful lot between 1950 and 1997, in accordance generally with English upper and middle class accents. If you watch films from the 1950s people's accents generally do sound very different.

That scene where William buggered off was a bit weird. One minute they're all concerned for him and dash out looking for him, then they all somehow return at exactly the same time having packed in the search even though they haven't found him, and they then just sit around waiting to see if he'll turn up. Surely if the heir to the throne disappears they would take it a bit more seriously?

I thought that.
Also they said that he had been missing for 14 hours? (Unless I misheard)
But yes, lets pack in the search and all go and sit around and hope a 15 year old boy who so happens to be the future king turns up!

Elizabeth Debicki did an incredible job as Princess Diana. I had to remind myself more than once that I was watching an actress

Yes have looked her up - didn't know of her. She gave an award winning performance as Diana - her voice and mannerisms were spot on .. not to mention great acting skills as well. Very compelling.

Newgirls · 19/11/2023 13:06

The casting and acting is terrific - particularly Dodi Mohammed and Diana.

the scene with Charles having a tantrum over the press contrasted with the party was great - that felt like it could be spot on

Did anyone pick up the remark made by the Queen when Tony Blair said Diana wanted a public role. She said something like 'you can't be half in and half out'. Was that a deliberate reference to H and M? Diana was actually doing a fabulous job carving a role outside the royal family, with things like the land mine charity. She really was in her prime.

KillingMeDeftly · 19/11/2023 14:07

I doubt MAF organised the paparazzi shots but I thought it was credible that he was portrayed as the driving force behind D&D's relationship. The actors playing him and Dodi were excellent and the ghost scene was surprisingly moving.

I don't think that's necessarily correct. the publicity was clearly turning against her and there ws quite a lot of criticism, notably in relation to the number of luxury holidays she was going on at others' expense. Those photos on Dodi Fayed's yacht attracted particular criticism because they were so obviously posed. She loved being photographed when it suited her, and indeed was in the habit of tipping photographers off about where she would be - but then she made a massive fuss when the same photographers published photos taken at what she deemed to be the wrong time.

Notoriously, on the day of her death one of the papers had to junk its print run because it had published something critical of her. It really was quite extraordinary the way the papers deified her overnight.

TheKnittedCharacter · 19/11/2023 15:11

I can remember on the morning the news broke that she was dead. My husband and I were staying in a hotel after a wedding. We were mid 20s.

We’d ordered a paper which was left outside the door. The front page had a picture of them in France on a boat. I remember saying something like ‘ffs, all this woman does is go on flash holidays…’.

Of course, we then flicked on the tv to hear she was dead. Bizarrely, not one guest mentioned it over the hotel breakfast, but by the evening news, we were saturated with coverage and she’d been reinvented as a saint.

Luddite26 · 19/11/2023 15:18

I do agree about her being in her prime at her death.
I really didn't take much notice of all the hoohaa in the 90s far too busy with my own life. Iwas due with my 3rd baby in September 97 and I thought please don't have this baby today or this week.
But when I got to 36 it sort of struck me how much she really was in her prime and becoming the confident woman she deserved to be and when I became a grandma it made me feel really sad that she didn't get that chance.
I know it was in season 5 the revenge dress when Charles was doing his interview. She looked just stunning and without all the fakery that seemed to follow that era - enter Jordan and Jodie Marsh and the lads mags.

@StillWantingADog i know the cause of the crash was Henri’s drinking but I can’t help but blame D&D’s death on the fact they didn’t wear seatbelts. I do think some people are just so famous they forget they are mortal.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 19/11/2023 16:49

The ‘blooding’ happened the year before.

One of Diana’s friends apparently said that Diana herself tipped off the press about her whereabouts.

It must be horrific to be constantly chased by the press but a drunk driver and no seatbelt was definitely the determining factor in their deaths.

Agree. Diana was irresponsible for not doing so IMO (as a mum). Perhaps she’d been drinking too so clouded judgement.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 19/11/2023 19:07

I've watched episode 3. I was ready to roll my eyes at it but found it quite moving. Kept thinking "no, don't go to Paris", "no, don't let HIM drive you" and "PUT YOUR RUDDY SEATBELT ON FFS". I think Debbie Debicki did a really good job, as well as the actors playing Al Fayed and Dodi. Really impressed how they get good lookalikes as well as good actors. The bloke playing her bodyguard Trevor looked just like I remember him.

I think it may have been a combination of a very stressful situation where she just forgot, and her instinct being to crouch down so the paps couldn't see her.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 19/11/2023 19:47

I binge watched this Ystd with my teen dd and we both cried at the end even though we knew what was coming.

Agree the Diana actress is outstanding, it was almost unsettling how like Diana she is.

I thought it was weird when William went missing and they started off panicked and then just sat around waiting. At what point would they have called the police?!

It's heartbreaking and tragic for Diana's children, if it's true she didn't even want to go to Paris that makes the whole tragedy even more sad.

JSMill · 19/11/2023 19:49

@Passepartoute yes I'd forgotten all about that. I guess that's partly because the media chose to bury the negative things they did. I will never forget a newspaper article in 93/94 about her going on a trip to Spain and being mobbed by photographers as she had by then given up her security. It said that for someone in her position to give up her security and make herself vulnerable like that was irresponsible. That turned out to be very accurate sadly.

That's not how I remember it. She was criticised in the press and seen quite negatively until she died and then suddenly she was The Peoples Princess.

cathyandclaire · 19/11/2023 20:27

I thought it was much better than the last season ( and probably the one before too) which seemed a bit like a daytime Hallmark movie.

Elizabeth Debecki ( ?sp) wad extraordinarily good physically and performance wise. I liked the more sensitive portrayal of Charles and I thought this time around Imelda S was the closest to the queen since Claire Foy.

Whatever about the press going after her, she was genuinely very popular amongst the public.

The royal family were seen as stuffy and cold, she was a breath of fresh air and was badly treated. A lot of people felt huge sympathy for her, even if she did make some bad choices.

She also had a huge impact through her charity work and it was obvious that she genuinely cared about those causes.

She was human and vulnerable and she was widely admired for that.

@Sakura7 that's not really my recollection. Before the affair/divorce yes she was well liked but I don't remember much positivity about her after the divorce.

If she wasn't popular there wouldn't have been anywhere near the reaction there was.

The press and the public are two different beasts.

Had she lived, her popularity may have waned, who knows.

Another series added to my list of "started great, turned to shit" list.
Sososo boring compared to previous seasons.
