Thread to mark the inevitable hype and build up to the 60th anniversary of Children's Programme Doctor Who*. (Nov 23rd 2023)

Will the new lad turn up? Will it be rubbish? Is Tom Baker in it with cameo? Or grumpy Christopher Eccleston?
Soz if this has already started elsewhere..I looked but found related threads

What’s this?

The new series or something else?

Rummikub · 26/10/2023 23:23

David Tennant returns as the Fourteenth Doctor in three all-new special episodes from showrunner Russell T Davies airing this November, where Tennant will reunite with former co-star Catherine Tate as companion Donna Temple-Noble.

excited about this actually

Witchesdontburn · 26/10/2023 23:29

Doctor Who used to be one of my favourites. It’s dreadful now, lots of woo. Peculiar self satisfied storylines. Always feels like there’s an agenda
it’s humourless and far too up it’s own arse.
The script writers need to watch a few episodes of star trek next generation to see how great science fiction is done.
Also they need decent script writers and storylines.

Crispynoodle · 26/10/2023 23:47

Fantastic! Can't wait we're having a Whovian party on the 25th

Davros · 27/10/2023 00:32

I wouldn't describe it as "children's programme", more family entertainment. I'm excited about it but only because David Tennant and Catherine Tate are returning. I agree with some of the comments above, the last series (what I saw of it) was dreadful

KnickerlessParsons · 27/10/2023 09:34

I didn't like Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whatsit in the role, Jodie Whatsit in particular. She was very "try too hard".

BananaHamster · 27/10/2023 09:35

It is not a children's programme!

There are a lot of adult themes. Yes, I'm a massive doctor who fan. Grin

I cannot wait to see Tennant & Tate again!

KnickerlessParsons · 27/10/2023 09:35

I'd love to see Torchwood back though. Loved that, and love the Ianto memorial in Cardiff.

BananaHamster · 27/10/2023 09:36

Disney + are supposed to be making a programme about unit, I do wonder if a torch wood reboot is in the plans as well.

MayIDestroyYou · 27/10/2023 09:50

Presume the ‘Children’s Programme’ thing is a joke - because of this stupid man?

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2010/jun/16/stephen-fry-doctor-who

Very excited - the trailer for the imminent episodes was brilliant. And Ncuti Gatwa’s arrival should be unspeakably thrilling. He seemed to be practising being a godlike figure in the last season of Sex Education.

Rummikub · 27/10/2023 15:52

Love torchwood too.

But would they have John barrowman back?

PuttingDownRoots · 27/10/2023 15:58

I really want Sarah Jane Adventures back somehow... Rani and Cylde have audio spinoffs. It not being able to have a proper conclusion was quite sad.

SoftKittyBazinga · 27/10/2023 16:02

I’m looking forward it. They did Jodie Whittaker dirty by writing a doctor who both explained and lectured and relied on her “fam”. She didn’t have the independence of the male doctors. They missed a trick, because I liked what did come across well, the flashes of what might have been.

love Ncuti and very excited to see his doctor, after our brief Doctor and Doctor Donna interlude.

Rummikub · 27/10/2023 16:29

Why are they having this brief interlude?

PuttingDownRoots · 27/10/2023 16:32

@Rummikub I think its just a ploy to have David Tennant back... and the Doctor Donna

Rummikub · 27/10/2023 16:37

@PuttingDownRoots

good ploy then. David Tennant is my favourite doctor. Though I did quite like Matt Smith storyline.

Jellybean85 · 27/10/2023 16:39

I'm excited for this, not sure why it's described as a children's programme it can be really dark!

Tennant and Donna are my fave combo Grin

MayIDestroyYou · 27/10/2023 16:43

It’s to bring back the audience, @Rummikub. Everyone fell out of love with it during the most recent iteration, and RTD wouldn’t want to be show running for half a dozen loyal viewers. They’re looking for a global audience - so they need the noise and pizazz of a winning team on screen to re-launch it.

I’m glad; Tennant and Tate were glorious together - and they’ll deliver the unspeakably gorgeous Ncuti Gatwa a gazillion breathless watchers. (I hope.)

Angrycat2768 · 27/10/2023 16:44

I loved Tennant and Catherine Tate but I thinknits a mistake bringing them back. It makes it more a RTD's greatest hit than a 60th anniversary celebration, and smacks if ' oh its crsp jiw so we'll go back to David Tennant.im surprised he agreed to go back not as part of a multi doctor episode.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2023 16:50

I hated Donna. I'm looking forward to David Tennant being back but not her.

Rummikub · 27/10/2023 16:51

Yeah I lost the love with JW too. Still stuck with it though cos I had to!

How my eps with DT? Just the one? And when!

Nooooooooo … You must watch Sex Education, @Sixsixtysix - not only because the work of Ncuti Gatwa and the rest of the cast / crew deserves as wide an audience as possible, but also because you can actually see why he became the inevitable and only correct choice for the Doctor. And then you’ll have the satisfaction of watching his more mature Who performance come Christmas.
