Thread to mark the inevitable hype and build up to the 60th anniversary of Children's Programme Doctor Who*. (Nov 23rd 2023)

Will the new lad turn up? Will it be rubbish? Is Tom Baker in it with cameo? Or grumpy Christopher Eccleston?
Soz if this has already started elsewhere..I looked but found related threads

Doctor Who used to be one of my favourites. It’s dreadful now, lots of woo. Peculiar self satisfied storylines. Always feels like there’s an agenda
it’s humourless and far too up it’s own arse.
The script writers need to watch a few episodes of star trek next generation to see how great science fiction is done.
Also they need decent script writers and storylines.

woo?

I've been looking out for special events. I know it's three episodes but I would go three times in three weeks. We went to a cinema showing of the 50th

When ??

Worriedkittycat · 18/11/2023 03:05

I am beyond excited.

We're also having a Whoniverse party on the 25th.

A PP mentioned a Unit spinoff, which I'm really hoping for. Kate Stewart is one of my faves.

Really looking forward to the specials and then the new series. Though, as good as David Tennant is, he's not my favourite. That spot goes to Peter Capaldi followed by Matt Smith.

Love RTD as a writer but did prefer the series under Moffat.

Giggorata · 18/11/2023 03:39

Agree about Peter Capaldi, who was superb.

I'm looking forward to Ncuti's portrayal too, but really hoping that all the fam/woke stuff that marred Jodie's time is ditched.

I am also really excited about the animated version of the Celestial Toymaker, which I remember watching the first time round. I found it quite spooky as a child, but it was also one of my favourites.

Ponderingwindow · 18/11/2023 04:40

super excited for the new episodes. I read somewhere that part of it is that they couldn’t get a full season ready in time so this little special works nicely. I just rewatched the DoctorDonna era in preparation.

the writing of the JW era was atrocious. The Doctor should be the smartest person in the room and a bit arrogant about that fact. Basically the Doctor fits my attraction profile perfectly no matter his appearance because I have a thing for really smart, arrogant men. So I was prepared for Jodie Whitaker to challenge my firmly established heterosexuality. Instead the character was needy and constantly doubting herself. It made me so angry that they would change the Doctor just because she was a woman.

I've never seen doctor who. What age is it suitable for if I can find some back series. I think my kids would like it and I'd like some more stuff to watch together

All the back episodes (except the 1st episode, because copyright holding grudge by the son of the writer) are on iPlayer

I'm so excited! We need a tardis emoji to celebrate.

GimpMasksAndWagonWheels · 18/11/2023 21:56

What age is it suitable for, would you say?

I've a feeling my boy would love it, but it's absolutely not my cup of tea and I've never seen a single one!

I've passed on my Doctor Who love to my five year old who is now obsessed!

But I started watching the show myself in 2005 at nine years old. Loved it then and love it just as much, perhaps even more, now.

It's a family show so suitable and enjoyed by both adults and children alike.

GimpMasksAndWagonWheels · 18/11/2023 22:27

So it's not too dark then @Worriedkittycat ?

I wouldn't say so. There's the odd episode that can be a bit scary, but they're rare!

SwordToFlamethrower · 18/11/2023 23:38

Can't wait! I loved the special on children in need, very clever 😀

Rummikub · 19/11/2023 01:23

Ah I gutted I missed it on children in need. I might’ve watched just for that.

Pssst! We already have a tardis emoji!

I was terrified of Dr Who when I was young!!! In the '70s, didn't stop me me watching them though!

Dd1 hasn’t got over the weeping angels yet.

Duvetfluff · 19/11/2023 03:32

Ooh they were both super good storylines.

I’m also not keen on shoe horning romance into it. And I loved Donna- ( and Missy) so good to see women with character and strength.
why wasn’t someone like missy the doctor?!

I’ve not got over them. I’m 42 and they occasionally feature in my nightmares. Blink is some of the best written TV ever.

Theunamedcat · 19/11/2023 07:15

They did jodie dirty on the writing and Peter capaldi in a lot of episodes but jodie was worse she is s great actress why they dumbed down her role I've no idea she was capable of so much more
