Going to watch from the beginning again - what a joy this program has been.

CaveMum · 11/10/2023 11:42

Don’t forget the podcast, though I this only being released one episode per week.

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 11/10/2023 16:12

The podcast could have been great. I’ve heard the writers/actors on other stuff and they’ve been open, honest, good fun, yet serious when needed.

But the host is shockingly awful. I know he’s in the cast, but I also think he’s shockingly awful in that too. His miscasting (both prog & pod) is the only misstep, in my view.

Yep I gave up listening to the podcast because of him too. He is not a good actor.

I just googled 'is it cake' - I did it know
That it was a real programme!! Even funnier now.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 12/10/2023 18:48

Watched it again just because...
And on 2nd viewing loved it more then liked. The episode where they think one will get sucked off and then bam nothing but a lovely line dance ending!
Jullians speech of why he isn't sorry...roll on Christmas

Atomickittyxx · 12/10/2023 20:43

I did intend to watch it an episode a week but binged the whole thing!! Can't wait for the Xmas episode! I definitely think the storyline with Julians investment will go somewhere in the Christmas episode. Would be brilliant if something happens to Mike and he gets to see the ghosts I'm thinking a shock from a faulty fairy light while decorating the tree maybe?
Loved the last episode Fanny trying to be nice and failing lol and Julians speech! I'm glad it wasn't kitty's sister that killed her and we see that actually she did love her. I think I may re watch from the beginning now!

SecondUsername4me · 12/10/2023 21:19

We only heard of, and watched, Ghosts this year. Our kids love it. We watched the finale today and I came straight to find a thread.

My thoughts on the finale:-

  • Fanny will see that Alison had a daughter and say "the next Lady Button" and then be sucked off
  • Alison and Mike will negotiate that the Golf Consortium includes a modest home on the land for them to live in, and it'll have a Ghost room with the chess table etc.
  • Kitty will also be sucked off as she wouldn't have wanted to go and leave Alison "alone" but now she isn't alone as she has her baby.

My favourite Ghost is Pat. We say "ooh scotch eggs" a lot! He is just so fantastic a character. We also love Robin. The thought that Robins been on that land for 1000 years is crazy- shame they didn't do a flashback to the big house being built on the land.

I was confused about Humphrey timeliness as I always had in mind Mary was before his time.

CaveMum · 16/10/2023 11:40

Finally watched them all, and loved them naturally!

@SecondUsername4me Humphrey dies either during Mary or Elizabeth I’s reign as he’s involved in a plot against one of them (can’t remember but suspect Elizabeth).

Most of the witch trials came later - James I was a big one for believing in witches, he wrote a book about it and accused them of trying to kill him/his bride in a storm in the North Sea.

There’s a school of thought that the big push against women, by accusing them of witchcraft, was a patriarchal response to having been ruled over by women for so long. Can’t have these uppity females getting ideas above their station after all!

I highly recommend listening to the You’re Dead To Me episode on the Witch Trials - informative and funny.

MeinKraft · 16/10/2023 11:55

@CaveMum you're right it was Elizabeth - death to Queen Bess

Twazique · 16/10/2023 16:53

Loved Robin's French, but loved that he will have to brush up on his Russian even more!

Ben Willbond speaks both French and Russian, he has a degree from Oxford in them.

Bruisername · 16/10/2023 17:03

We already know the baby will see the ghosts as in an earlier series mikes nephew/niece could see them

and obi was only there to delay Mike and Alison discussing whether or not to sell

i cringed for the captain but at least he died knowing his life was requited. Found it odd none of the other ghosts were at the party and saw what happened

SecondUsername4me · 16/10/2023 17:18

Yeah - Robin, Humphrey, Fanny and Kitty would have all been around then for sure.

Bruisername · 16/10/2023 17:20

And Kitty would definitely have been at a party!

Bruisername · 16/10/2023 17:21

And thomas

SecondUsername4me · 16/10/2023 17:35

Unless they were just in different rooms?

mehtivation · 16/10/2023 19:47

The other ghosts were on the drive looking at all the cars when the captain died

Hedjwitch · 16/10/2023 20:41

Ben Willbond speaks French? Is there no end to that man's utter gorgeousness?

My plan for the Christmas episode is Alison going into labour early, trapped in house cos of snow, ghosts have to help deliver the baby somehow. Something goes wrong and the ghosts have to find a way to communicate with Mike. They join hands and use their combined energies to materialise briefly and give him instructions. Baby born safely. Spent, the ghosts fade away into the ether ....never to be seen again but having ensured baby button continues the succession!
( can you tell I have given this some thought?)

SecondUsername4me · 16/10/2023 20:51

That would be a beautiful ending.

AmyandPhilipfan · 18/10/2023 18:38

Hedjwitch, that sounds lovely! But I think it would choose for them to be sucked off rather than fade away, so that it's clear that they've moved on rather than just disappeared.

Sheisready · 18/10/2023 20:45

People are bonkers suggesting that any or all of Mike, Alison and BabyButton should die in the Christmas special.

I'm afraid I didn't like the captain's death and I found it unbelievable that a man of such principles would commit the unforgiveable crime of stolen valour.
(I too wondered if his ribbons have always been worn upside down and this was a way of explaining it).

Rewatching them at the moment and tonight watched a much earlier episode where Alison and Mike camp out.

At the end of the camping, Pat awards Alison some (obvs invisible) Scout badges.

He then turns to The Captain and awards him the teamwork badge. The camera then zoomed in on a very proud and wistful looking Captain. Knowing what I know now, it makes sense, as it looks like he is thinking "my first proper badge awarded".

So I think it's been the plan all along.

CaveMum · 18/10/2023 21:44

My prediction for Christmas Finale is that Julian’s investments result in a massive windfall meaning Mike and Alison can secure their future at Button House.

Re the Captain, I’m not sure I believe that they have been playing a massive long game with us all from the start. I suspect that some military buffs spotted the costume error with the ribbons upside down in the early episodes and pointed it out. The writers then decided to “explain” it with the story about him nicking them.

Sheisready · 18/10/2023 21:46

I agree, there hasn't been a clever long game. Perhaps the podcast will reveal all?

(Also, having served in WWII the captain would have been eligible for medals so the camping badge wouldn't have been his first).
