It is to be hoped that attitudes have changed since then.

That letter from the compensation board 😡

Did that taxi driver exist or is he a fictitious character? So much of what happens in this series seems incredible!

He was a real person and he really was a suspect for a while.

I am watching it as was intended to be watched originally, weekly. I feel angry at the way the police treated the victims, and don’t know how I’ll react when the episode is shown of his last victim, Jacqueline Hill. I knew her well, a quiet girl from the north east. Her dad never forgave himself, he got her to move from the place she was living in, thinking it was away from the murders but the move to her new accommodation put her into Sutcliffe's path, if she’d stayed where she was, she wouldn’t have been on that bus route. He died a broken man.

Southeastdweller · 10/10/2023 13:12

Jill Halfpenny was superb as Doreen Hill. I can’t begin to imagine the pain if I were in similar shoes as the parents.

That must be hard for you. 💐💐

Im getting increasingly angry at the police and their attitudes and intransigence.

I agree. I think they were both wonderful. It was superb acting all round I thought.

I thought it was very well done. Episode 6 had me in tears.

My dad was still living in Sunderland at the time and was one of the many (thousands?) men in the area who were questioned by the police and asked to provide handwriting samples. The obsession with and tunnel vision they got over Wearside Jack was ludicrous. The incompetence of the men in charge, good grief.

Episode 6 is absolutely horrendous. The heartbreak of Jacqueline Hill's parents, the background music playing and the marches. Really powerful scenes.

It is so distressing to watch and know it all really happened. A better investigating team would surely have done better or would they, was it all down to luck and they were so desperate to find him they got sidelined by the hoaxer.

How awful that Jacqueline's bag was found the same night but they didn't search the area and if they had they'd have found her body sooner.

Passepartoute · 12/10/2023 23:57

I find it pretty horrifying that ultimately Sutcliffe was only caught by chance. If those police officers had come along a few minutes earlier they'd have missed him, and if they'd come half an hour later they would probably have found the body of another victim. He could potentially have continued an awful lot longer, because WYP's methods were never going to lead them to Sutcliffe.

Yes and Oldfield etc all grinning and saying how 'delighted' they were at the press conference, absolutely tone deaf.

They should've played tribute to the beat pcs who caught him, kept solemn faces and said what a good job they'd done and like everyone else they were relieved he was finally caught. 'Delighted' omg.

Then one of them went on to be paid 40k by the Daily Mail for his story, whilst poor Marcella received 17k compensation and lost her benefits because of it.

What a bunch of bungling idiots. I feel sorry for the incident room pcs and juniors who all seemed to be dedicated to doing their jobs properly.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 13/10/2023 18:28

Do we know the names and stories of the the ordinary PC's who had the brains to go back and check where Sutcliff went for a leak ?

It was Sgt Bob Ring who went back and checked after arresting him the night before. The young policeman with him was also a Bob/Robert - I want to say PC Robert Hyde? But it was Ring who should take most of the credit.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 13/10/2023 18:47

👍🏻

And there are plenty on this site who will have agreed with her losing her benefits

Passepartoute · 13/10/2023 23:46

A thought that occurred to me while watching this was - surely Sutcliffe must have got an awful lot of blood on him during the course of these attacks? Presumably he changed and washed before he got home, but it would be fairly amazing if his wife never noticed anything suspicious.

Willmafrockfit · 14/10/2023 06:58

i cant believe that the man received £40.000 from the mail on sunday, just appalling,
he diverted the blame

such awful policing, pigheaded

Willmafrockfit · 14/10/2023 06:59

I read that as well @Willmafrockfit.
I think it must have been a strange marriage. He had a terrible upbringing by all acccounts. However, that doesn't excuse what he did.
