Anyone else watching this?

I think it just came out. I highly recommend it.

it’s a German show that stars with a premise very similar to the movie Room.

the woman escapes (not a spoiler, it happens in the beginning) and the police have to find out who she is and if it’s linked to a disappearance 13 years before.

The shows follows the investigation and flashbacks to the life inside the house.

I’m on episode 3 and it’s so gripping, will definitely finish it tomorrow.

I enjoyed this and didn't guess. Agree didn't think he was very sinister when he was revealed

sashh · 19/09/2023 08:18

I watched the last one at 1am this morning.

CherryogDog · 19/09/2023 14:14

@AgathaQuiztee I was wondering the same about the landmines.
Also, how Jasmin managed to keep the piece of glass concealed while she was in the hospital bed.

PickAChew · 19/09/2023 14:15

I always prefer to watch something in the original language, even if I understand none of it at all!

Though I'm now watching Public Enemy and some of the subtitles are paraphrasing the original French just a little bit too much, particularly when there is swearing involved!

My question is how did Jasmin and Hannah manage to get through the minefield without tripping a mine?

I'd like to know this too! Seeing as that poor Polizei guy lost half a leg.

Also - was Hannah supposed good or bad? She seemed to hep Jasmin kill 'Papa' so they could eventually be free, but she also killed the poor innocent guy in the car.

colouringindoors · 20/09/2023 21:24

Really enjoyed this but have the same questions as others.

I thought Hannah was so brainwashed/traumatised by poppa that she was a good girl to stay in his good books. But then the end made me wonder. And Jasmine's relationship with her on the beach after Hannah had told her she'd killed the driver and poppa called the ambulance. Confusing. I like how the grandma befriended Jonathon.

Passepartoute · 20/09/2023 22:54

She lied about all the other men shown in photos saying they were all papa

I'm not sure it was a lie. She'd been brought up to believe any woman could be Mama, so equally any man could be Papa.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/09/2023 23:01

Jasperdale · 18/09/2023 21:42

Did anyone else find Papa was not sinister enough when we met him? He seemed quite affable and kind to his daughter , a complete contrast to what we were shown when they were captive. He just didn’t seem scary or believable.

Yeah I was a bit underwhelmed, I'm pretty sure one of the other women would have been able to either overpower him or manipulate him into letting her go.

I think Hannah just had a really bad case of Stockholm syndrome.

He could have put the landlines in after jasmine escaped?

I thought the police did a terrible job all in all, the useless family friend was unbelievably dozy and I found it hard to believe he was actually a policeman. None of them seemed to have any managers or supervisors. Also no family liaison officers? No proper health checks on the kids?

Conferenceblues · 22/09/2023 09:19

Just finished it. Found it gripping and really well acted. Some questions though, like other PPs. Why did he get through so many Lenas? And it seems like no one had noticed this pattern of young women going missing - about 15/20 in 5/6 years - that’s pretty obvious, surely? And it’s not like he was picking friendless homeless women who wouldn’t be missed. Just burying them in a shallow grave - surely hard to get away with!

Very confused about the end too. Was really sure that Hannah was completely on side with Papa and wanted to go ‘home’ because of her lifelong conditioning. She was constantly thinking to herself about the plan, which was the plan she’d made with her father - no time to make any plan with Jasmine. But then she seemed totally unphased and up for enjoying the beach whilst her father lay bleeding out in the sand and Jasmine was covered in his blood. Confusing.

I also thought the grandfathers obsession with the girl and total lack of interest with the boy was somehow meaningful - but I guess it was just supposed to be because Hannah looked like Lena. I don’t understand why he didn’t care at all about Lena’s other child.

Very well done though - I thought Jasmine was brilliant, both the character and the actor.

jay55 · 22/09/2023 10:37

In Hannah's world parents die and get replaced. So maybe she wasn't bothered by Papa's death as she expected a new Papa to appear in a week or two.
And we don't know if she'd seen the murders of other Lenas. If she had then murder of parent, followed by a new version is the only life she's known.

I’m not sure I buy this. This has happened with mothers - mothers are enslaved and ultimately disposable. But her father has been the dominating and controlling figure her whole life - him being replaced would be totally different because he has the control.

Passepartoute · 22/09/2023 14:36

It seemed odd the way they appeared to leave Jonathan alone in his room for long periods at the hospital. I'd have thought they'd be involving not only psychiatrists but people like play therapists, to say nothing about doing something to ease him into education - and that in general it wouldn't be viewed as a good idea to leave him on his own, especially after Hannah had left.

I watched with subtitles, which worked fine, but I suspect I was missing nuances in tone etc. For instance, was the younger policewoman meant to be a bit dopy or just well-meaning and inexperienced?

Epictantrum · 22/09/2023 15:47

I've just finished it, really enjoyed it. Did Lena draw those pictures on the bunkbed? Were we supposed to think Hannah had drawn them? I have only just twigged that Lena probably drew them and was wondering the whole way through why the grandma wasn't more intrigued how Hannah drew it.

benoticanarsed · 23/09/2023 08:57

I've been wanting to read this thread for a while but I didn't want any spoilers.

I've now seen it all. I know it was too obvious for the grandad, policeman to be involved so I'm glad they weren't. However those twists are what make you question everything. We didn't even know this man.

Am I right in thinking he dressed these woman to look like his mum? Then raped them? Incest? But he only managed to father Sarah and the boy?

If the boy was his only living child why didn't he take the boy with him when he picked up Hannah and Jasmine? Didn't he know Jasmine was pregnant before he abducted? Did he assume Hannah was his?

Very disappointed. Also what was the point of the grandma / policeman story?

Did Jasmine recover?
Where did Hannah and her brother go?
Did the policeman retire / change jobs / get the sack?

mikado1 · 24/09/2023 09:31

No dubbing for me (Netflix Ireland). So true re Spider!! I knew he reminded me of someone! I liked him and also Aida. Perhaps the others tried to escape. Agree the number of missing women should have been connected. Thought leaving them in the room alone was odd for sure. Hard to know wrt Hamnah at the end. Unlikely she'd turn on him surely.

I wonder what the pp question was wrt the snow globe?

Passepartoute · 24/09/2023 10:57

If the boy was his only living child why didn't he take the boy with him when he picked up Hannah and Jasmine?

I wondered if he'd been thwarted by the fact that that was when the grandmother wen to see Jonathan?

Catterbat · 18/09/2023 22:20

Well apparently I’m in the minority then because I thought it was complete garbage 😂

Yeah, it's really not great.

On the last episode. It's absolute shite! Can't believe I've wasted so much time on this.🙄

Also, the sunglasses thing, how long does it take to adjust to daylight 🙄

workshy46 · 26/09/2023 12:46

I thought the ending was sooo poor after a great build up. Your man seemed like a complete drip and nowhere near as chilling as we were lead to believe. Can't see how anyone could be afraid of him. No surprises or twists. Acting was superb though

efeslight · 26/09/2023 19:21

Finished the series today, as a PP said, I liked the 3 main police characters and would watch another series involving them.
Enjoyed the series despite some parts of the story not being completely clear to me.
Read lots of thrillers so will check out her other books if in English

AgathaQuiztee · 28/09/2023 22:27

I don't think the landmines were put after they escaped. An earlier scene showed him counting the steps to navigate through the minefield.

VivaDixie · 30/09/2023 15:16

I think the PP question about the snowglobe may be - how come a snowglobe and Miss Tinky cat ended up in the childrens home - as has been said earlier this may be to do with Poppa having access to the hospital

OR more importantly - did anyone notice the lady care worker take a photo of Hannah on her phone and put it away quickly when someone came in - i immediately didnt trust her after that - maybe she was in cahoots with Poppa

I also thought that as Poppa was head of a security firm - he had access to many organisations and buildings in the area so he would have access to the childrens home

VivaDixie · 30/09/2023 15:20

I also didnt trust the grandfather due to the picture under her bed - however another PP has answered that for me as Original Lena was an artist - she must have drawn these pics under the bed

I also wonder whether Jonathan was Original Lena's son - he could have been born to one of the other Lenas as there were so many. I did wonder about this actually, we are led to believe that Lena gave birth to Sarah at Christmastime (the kids were sitting outside the bedroom when she and the baby were dying). then Jasmine came to them in the April (5 months before September). There cant have been many Lenas arriving and dying in the space of 4 months max

Unless it was an earlier Christmas - but the kids looked a similar age and that still isnt enough time for all the Lenas to go missing (there were about 15-20 photos on the wall in the Police Station)

VivaDixie · 30/09/2023 15:21

I also wondered how she managed to hide the glass in her sanitary towel when Poppa had security cameras in her flat. However i then remembered that she switched the bathroom light on for a while before coming out - she must have done it then (Hannah said - where is mama?)

I LOVE that there is a thread on this!

Grandfather reminded me of Mark Hamill!!
