I thought Alex might have autism as well but you can have autism and be a dick.

Norway is crazy expensive. They will be needing to work as much as they can in northern Europe.

Mel and Helene seem to be pretty good at picking the better paid jobs so far.

Graciebobcat · 02/10/2023 09:50

They won't have to spend a lot of time in Norway though- Tromso is a long way north but they can probably get there in a couple of days from Oslo. Hope they have some warm clothing!

skilpadde · 02/10/2023 10:10

The programme's graphic showing the route up through Europe suggests that they won't do much of Norway at all, but rather head north through Sweden, and then across to Norway. I'm assuming that's based on where the checkpoints will be.

I'm hoping to see them get the Arctic train from Kiruna to Narvik!

Graciebobcat · 02/10/2023 10:18

Sweden's not cheap either, mind.

They will need a few quid for northern Europe, though it will only be for the last leg or two. I bet their trains are still cheaper than the UK though!

HoHoHoliday · 02/10/2023 11:07

@skilpadde I got that Arctic train once, the scenery is absolutely beautiful!

ScribblingPixie · 02/10/2023 13:17

You can go from Stockholm to Tromso on the train and it isn't expensive in advance - no idea about last minute, I expect the price leaps up.

They would have a fit in the UK.

Turning up at a station to get a ticket on the day for a long distance!!

I like Emma, but I thought she was quite a bit older than me. She was glam on Saturday Kitchen though, well, obviously anyone would be compared to being filmed on the road like they are on the programme and she was very funny too. One thing that I did think gave an impression of her being much older was when she said that 'being older' she didn't really get on board with the concept of 'brunch' I don't have any contemporaries who're either not understanding it, or not engaging with it. It seemed such an odd thing to say and it made me wonder if her husband is much older? but I couldn't seem to find out anything about him in the public arena.

She certainly doesn't display that kind of attitude on the Race, she's been up for it and doing well.

RaraRachael · 03/10/2023 13:25

I'm slightly younger than Emma and never heard the word brunch when I was little, nor did we ever have it but I know what it is.

martinisforeveryone · 03/10/2023 14:36

@RaraRachael I agree, I didn't know it growing up either. I googled as I wondered when it entered popular culture and apparently the term was coined in the UK in 1895 and the 1930s in the USA. I'm definitely not that old 😂 I feel like it was a late 1980s or early 90s thing? but certainly all of this century, so it just felt odd to me for her to say it's not something she's familiar with, specifically because of her age.

Graciebobcat · 03/10/2023 14:45

Brunch is the best! Most days I just eat brunch and dinner.

BeaLola · 04/10/2023 00:16

I did warm more to Emma on episode 2 although I still can't believe she's only 63. I tried not to laugh when Harry said if his Mum could sleep on the floor of a ferry then he would too - but then musing afterwards I guess if he left home at 17 , became boy band famous and wealthy he hasn't really had a normal life/struggles .

Halsall · 04/10/2023 21:53

LOL at Harry and Emma sitting on the train, both doing their tapestries!

tennissquare · 04/10/2023 22:01

Wow, what a great episode!

RainBow725 · 04/10/2023 22:01

Loved this episode. Best one so far.

Alstroemeria123 · 04/10/2023 22:02

I would still prefer to see more of the countries and less of them all yammering on about the past

cakeorwine · 04/10/2023 22:16

Italian trains are cheap.

Switzerland has eaten their budgets and they still have a long way to go.

keiratwiceknightly · 04/10/2023 22:24

I love Billy and Bonny. Their relationship is great and he is so determined not to be held back. What an inspiration.

Enjoyed this ep (though hoped to see some footage of the Italian dolomites) but it was a bit frustrating to see the other teams faffing about and wasting time. Presumably a production decision to give Alex and Noel a chance to catch up. No way would they have done that well without help.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 04/10/2023 22:27

I thought Emma was older than 63 as well, my mums 73 and she reminds me a lot of her. That said she is a retired nurse and that can easily add ten years to you (I'm a nurse!!)

Billy and Bonnie are amazing, Billy is inspiring, nothing gets in his way.

To be fair the teams who came third and fourth were seriously held back by the French train strikes which was just the luck of the draw.

Nottheeightoutoftencats · 04/10/2023 22:38

Do they get the chance to change what they are carrying at the checkpoint breaks? If they have been lugging their down jackets since North Africa there wouldn't be room for much else in their bags (Emma can't have can't have more than a tooth brush and one pair of pants if the jacket was in her bag along with her Richard and Judy books and a bumper pack of sewing kits).

Alwaystheplusone · 04/10/2023 22:45

It’s interesting that Emma talks about missing out on years with Harry as he went off with the band from the age of 17. Yet she doesn’t mention that he spent years away at boarding school which would have been a choice made by her and her husband.

Cleebope2 · 04/10/2023 22:50

How old is Melanie’s mum? I am loving this series and I like them all. Who cares who wins? I thought Emma was older and was shocked when they revealed she was 63. I’m 53 and do not want to be old in ten years but she does seem knackered. She was great on horseback though and seems a lovely woman. Sometimes Melanie gets too sentimental but she obviously grew very apart from her mum for a long time and is really reconnecting now. Billy and Bonnie are a total joy to watch.
