What IS the embroidery they are doing?

Some sort of tapestry, a kit I think. One each!

Harry richly deserved a telling-off tonight.

LIZS · 11/10/2023 21:57

Awww, Alex's empathy for Billy.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/10/2023 21:57

Just when you've written Alex off...

Halsall · 11/10/2023 21:57

That was good to see.

lightinthebox · 11/10/2023 21:58

And now I like Alex! That was so heart warming. Really hoping Billy gets lots of rest for his leg.

Jellykat · 11/10/2023 22:00

Agree, ive done a turnaround re Alex too!

SwedishEdith · 11/10/2023 22:05

Didn't catch what the route is next week. Sarajevo to where? And looks like (or edited to) Hélène has missed the train!

And, yes, that joint walk to the hotel was lovely.

EvilRingahBitch · 11/10/2023 22:17

I'd be really cross with Harry if he was cutting it so fine to set off to catch a bus and there were only two a day. Sometimes on this show you've got no choice but to try for a really tight connection, so a bit of running is inevitable, but for a bus first thing in the morning there's no excuse not to build an extra 15 minutes in case of upsets and so you can walk at a leisurely pace.

On the other hand Emma was moaning that she was tired and wanted to sit on a train and not stress right at the beginning of the leg when she'd literally walked out of a day's relaxing in a five star hotel, so that was a bit off.

I still love them: he's a smashing ballroom dancer, and she's very relatable.

Alstroemeria123 · 11/10/2023 21:33

Is Harry annoying anyone else tonight?

I thought he was a right dick tonight, his poor mum being dragged around everywhere because he's so desperate to win 🙄

I'm worried about Billy's stump, a blisters not good 😕 I hope there's a medic or nurse keeping an eye on him.

I thought Alex and his dad might have taken Billy's bag tbh, he didn't need to be carrying stuff when his stump was so sore.

I don't think you find that out until the beginning of each show. Poor Helenes face though when she lost Mel in next weeks clip 😥

PuppyMonkey · 11/10/2023 22:25

Good old Alex - I Grin when Billy asked him “how’s your leg?” And Alex was all: “My leg?” And then Billy explained he meant this leg of the journey. Grin

Harry and his mum have been filmed running for lots of buses and trains all series haven't they? With mum trailing along behind. Now it all makes sense, Mr Crap Timekeeper.

But Emma is always moaning about how tired she is.

She's in her 60s! And spent her working life doing a physically demanding job. Of course she's tired.

I've felt frustration with Harry from the start that he can't see this. I mean, I get that we all have to navigate the transition from being children to being adult children of older parents with physical limits yadda yadda, I've done it myself and it's not a smooth ride, but Jesus, it doesn't take a lot of working out to realise when someone is physically overwhelmed.

FrazzledFirefly · 11/10/2023 23:18

I'm not fit, so I do sympathise with Emma but this race compared with series one of normal RATW really highlights how well Tony and Elaine (the winning team) coped as they were a similar age to Emma.

Same with Jo in series two. Though she was likely late fifties.

Emma does seem older than her years unfortunately. Hope Harry becomes more accommodating of her.

BeaLola · 11/10/2023 23:32

Enjoyed tonight and especially the joint second place due to the two teams putting the race aside for Billy's leg - so hoping they would go that and they did.

The editing for next week - I expect Mel and Mum are only momentarily split up.

Harry ! Yes I would be getting up earlier so as not to miss the train/bus - my DH is like this - we've got loads of time yah de yah and I will be running as we've 2 mins left to sprint along 3 platforms - I would rather be early than running with the possibility of missing it.

5foot5 · 11/10/2023 23:53

I was glad that at least one team (Alex and Noel) took time to have a proper look at Slovenia.

We had a holiday there pre-pandemic and it is a really beautiful little country. We spent two days at Lake Bled and it is breathtaking. Our hotel had views overlooking the lake and that island. They mentioned about it being good luck to ring the bell in the church. In fact when we were there the bell was going all the time because every visitor to the island has a go. Including us Grin.

Presil · 12/10/2023 00:09

Emma does seem older than her years unfortunately.

Emma seems about right for her years to me @FrazzledFirefly . She is a woman in her sixties ie within years of her three score and ten. Her son just hasn't realised yet that his mum is getting older. It happens to us all, and it's not a personal failing or to do with mindset. I know that there is a drive now to think that age is just a number but it's not true - as we age, we face physical limitations.

Alstroemeria123 · 12/10/2023 00:18

It’s not her physical limitations that make Emma seem older to me, though - it’s her general attitude. I don’t know how old Helene and Noel are, but they both seem younger than Emma to me - but considering how old their “children” are, they may well be older.

Presil · 12/10/2023 00:28

Ok. But she's obviously not a shirker. So her general attitude seems to me to be informed by her physical limitations. Which she has an accurate assessment of. It's perfectly ok to be 63 years old and not be able to do everything a 23 year old person can. In fact it's perfectly normal.

awaynboilyurheid · 12/10/2023 09:18

Agree Harry ( bit like myself) is rubbish at timing person, ( believe me I try too but it’s not easy) so poor mum has to run when they could have left early and just strolled to the bus. I still think he’s lovely with her, and you can see him fighting his competitive nature to try and accommodate his mum too.
Eviringah totally agree he was the most beautiful ballroom dancer, but now I’m realising he would have put his all into it and he would have been rehearsing every second!
Yes Alex redeemed himself a bit tonight, poor Billy he’s such a lovely young man really hope things settle and he can be pain free.

5foot5 · 12/10/2023 09:18

I am 61, so nearly the same age as Emma. At first she seemed a lot older to me, perhaps because it had been edited to play up her more "doddery" moments, e.g. faffing in a shop so they missed a connection. But I increasingly have sympathy for her because I would be getting tired with all the running about and probably stiff as a board after 19 hours on a coach.

Also I am very much with her on the timing thing. I hate being late or even cutting it fine for things. In fact it is a bit of a joke with DH and DD that I always get us to places with loads of time in hand, but I have noticed that DD, as an independent adult, now does just the same!

awaynboilyurheid · 12/10/2023 09:29

Same age as Emma (she does seem older than me but everyone ages differently, I had same job too) but then I would prefer the nice hotels and hate ( couldn’t do ) a 19 hour bus journey!

ScribblingPixie · 12/10/2023 09:45

No way could I do a 19-hour bus journey - my back would totally give out. And being dragged off to scrub out a yacht afterwards? No, Harry, reign it in. Emma also mentioned taking statins last week so she must have high blood pressure or a heart condition.

Graciebobcat · 12/10/2023 10:03

Yes Emma doesn't look that well, she looks at least ten years older. I would hate rushing around for things too though and would hate having to run with heavy stuff because we've cut it fine.

Kingdomoffife · 12/10/2023 12:48

Agree, Harry was a bit annoying in this episode. I know it is a race but unlike the non celebs, they don't get a cash prize for winning, do they? So why not enjoy the journey more, and listen to his exhausted mum.

Like Melanie and her mum - very honest about the impact of fame and how you adjust once you're not as successful anymore.

LIZS · 12/10/2023 12:51

I'm with Emma. There is no point winning if you don't enjoy the journey. I would be ready for bed after a 19 hour coach journey especially with an early start next day.
