As much as I found it nice that Alex didn’t want to compete against the siblings, I couldn’t understand it when they were literally running against each other, I think in Portugal, to get first to the hotel.

Being first is only important in the last leg, who cares if you come second or third when you arrive literally only within 5 minutes of each other?

Ok. But she's obviously not a shirker. So her general attitude seems to me to be informed by her physical limitations. Which she has an accurate assessment of. It's perfectly ok to be 63 years old and not be able to do everything a 23 year old person can. In fact it's perfectly normal.

This.

When I was in my 30s I travelled the world, inc USA, Canada, China. I am 62 now and cannot imagine doing what Emma is doing. I am reasonably fit and active for my age but those bus journeys especially, would see me off.😁

I laughed, though, when Emma and Harry were moaning about all the noises on the bus.

They were running against each other in Portugal because there were no issues with Billy's leg at that point. It was obvious that he was having problems in last night's episode and I thought Alex did the right thing by saying that all four of them should go together.

2023usernameNew · 12/10/2023 17:15

@TastingSinister , I know they were running against each other and his leg was fine.

what I’m saying is that I don’t see the point of running to get to the hotel first when they’ll arrive within minutes of each other.

the place on the check in book is Only important on the Last episode. Yes, it’s a nice boost but I remember them really going for it and i personally thing it’s not a big deal that early on in the Race.

It's was probably the psychological boost of being a place ahead that was driving the teams to race in the first leg. By this week I think Alex had realised that it doesn't really matter if you are 2 minutes ahead or 2 minutes behind another team because it's not going to have any impact when you leave after the rest day(s).

TastingSinister · 12/10/2023 18:34

@2023usernameNew

Ah, sorry, I think I missed the point of your post.

Yes, I agree that a few minutes either way is neither here nor there at this point.

martinisforeveryone · 12/10/2023 19:05

I'm a cynic so I can quite imagine the production crew saying Go! Go! Go! to be quicker to sign in and then as time goes on, the contestants say 'hang on, sod that'

neveradullard · 12/10/2023 19:20

She's in her 60s! ......... Of course she's tired.

Woah there! Why 'of course'?! I really don't think 60's means you're knocking at death's door these days. Some of my friends in their 60's are fit, active and backpacking still. I expect the pace of RATW is a bit relentless but Emma does seem older than her years to me and if you told me she was 73 not 63 I wouldn't raise an eyebrow. I think it's her general manner, posture etc. Whereas Helene and Noel might be the same age or older but seem more up for it.

RaraRachael · 12/10/2023 19:51

Thanks. I'm 61 and I'm not tired all the time but Harry's mum looks at least 10 years old than me and my friends.

Starlette · 12/10/2023 21:05

I’m mid 50s and hope I will look and act nothing like Harry‘s mum in 19 years, having said that a 19 hour bus journey followed by scrubbing out you’re in the rain finish me off

trulyunruly01 · 12/10/2023 21:58

I have wondered whether a career in nursing, as she has completed, has left her rather more tired than some other careers might. And perhaps with some joint and muscle issues due to the physicality of the job.
I work in a similar profession and am a few years younger. I have a dodgy knee and some lower back damage that I attribute to my work.

Stopsnowing · 12/10/2023 22:19

I also really like Mel’s honesty.

Presil · 12/10/2023 22:54

I think she's really getting into her stride and looking a lot happier but my goodness she is very hard on herself.

Dulra · 13/10/2023 14:03

I'm another one who thought Harry was a bit lacking in cop on this episode but I think he took on board his mum's complaint with dignity. No matter how old I am I would have killed him with his time keeping. Years ago before me and dh had kids we were a bus ride from the airport, rather than feel stressed with my dhs time keeping I used to always get the earlier bus to him, check in have a nice browse in duty free and meet him at the gate where he'd be all sweaty and stressed at nearly missing the flight 🤣.

Harry does remind me of my own brother who does not seem to have noticed that our parents are in their 70s and still expects them to do far more than they're able

martinisforeveryone · 13/10/2023 15:03

I think it’s really demonstrating that Harry and Mel have had rarified experiences through their careers. Bookings would be made, travel organised, cars sent for them. They’ve missed out on acquiring skills that most of us have to learn early on. On the flip side they often knew nothing of where they’d been, they existed in a bubble really. It’s quite a learning experience for them both.

I definitely think this, I've been nursing for 20 years with another 20 to go until retirement and I dread to think what I'll be like by them 🫠🙈

My neck, shoulder, back and knees all cause see me trouble now and I'm constantly knackered at 44yo!!

Doingmybest12 · 13/10/2023 23:25

Just caught up, what a lovely sister and Bonnie is .

Maireas · 14/10/2023 10:26

I always think that when someone does very well in a sport, sacrifices have to be made. I suspect many parents and siblings have to compromise their own choices.
Billy and Bonnie are lovely, and I thought Alex was very kind. I quite enjoyed Emma having "words" with Harry!

Doingmybest12 · 14/10/2023 11:12

I wanted to hear Alex acknowledge Bonnie s role in supporting Billy , we are relying on the edit.

Samcro · 14/10/2023 16:38

I’m a couple of years younger than Emma(she does act older than her age)
i would struggle with all the running, having been a carer for years my body’s fucked. Her telling Harry of made me laugh as he sounded just like my son for a moment.
Bonnie is amazing, I wish she had got to ride a horse.

Umanresources · 14/10/2023 16:53

It made me laugh when Emma said she had two things to say to Harry and then couldn’t remember the second one 😂

Me too! She's lovely.

poorlyarm · 16/10/2023 22:14

I can't believe some of you think Harry is nice to his mum I think he's a right dick to her! Whether she is 23 or 63 he shouldn't get to call the shots and have her struggling along, feeling that she needs to 'stick up for herself'. Gah what a selfish prick he is, I wish he'd have vommed on the bus!

I like all the others. Looking forward to next episode. Smile

Halsall · 17/10/2023 09:13

I think some of the editing is a bit pointed - I noticed it particularly last week. There was a sequence where we saw Harry chivvying Emma along with a constant litany of 'where are you, Mum? - Come on, Mum! - Are you nearly there, Mum? - Just run a bit faster, Mum! - Of course we're going to make the bus, Mum! - We've got loads of time, Mum! - Look, Mum, a whole 55 seconds, MUM!!'

If I was Emma I’d have cheerfully strangled him by now.

They also buried in the edit that the time they were getting there for was 15 minutes before the bus was leaving so they were given 7.15 as an arrival time for the 7.30 bus. Totally understandable that the bus company doesn't want all the passengers it arrive 30 seconds before the bus was due to leave but if they had not run and arrived at 7.19 they would still have had time to load their luggage and board the bus.
I'm not a morning person so I'd prefer 5 minutes more in bed to extra time standing in a bus station!
