Looking for a well-made, cosy murder that I might have missed.

I LOVE Midsomer, loved Magpie Murders, thoroughly enjoy Death in Paradise (even though it's nonsense). Used to enjoy Doc Martin, back in the day. LOVED Broadchurch.
Found Vera a bit bleak, though it was very well done. Loved the Alan Davies magician windmill one but the kids find it dated. Didn't enjoy Shakespeare & Hathaway.
Quite enjoyed that one on the Scottish island with the policeman and his daughter.

Enjoyed Lewis. Enjoyed Endeavor.

What have I missed? Maybe a stand-alone, or a mini-series?

Assume I have been down a well for the past 3 years and have not had access to British TV or media. What fun, well-made cosy murders or mysteries might I enjoy?

"That one on the Scottish island" - was that Hamish MacBeth? it's a long time ago but I don't remember him having a daughter (or it being an island tbf). Anyway if not that's worth a try.

Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) has the added bonus of a young Lovely David being a git in the first episode.

Someone's already mentioned Only Murders in the Building, which I know H really enjoyed.

I think the one on the Scottish island is “Shetland”.

I used to love Inspector Wexford. Was my favourite of that time.

DinosaurOfFire · 02/09/2023 11:13

Enola Holmes on netflix is really good and quite cosy.

BlueKaftan · 02/09/2023 11:15

Grantchester

MattDamon · 02/09/2023 11:40

Elementary on Amazon Prime. Modern Sherlock Holmes set in New York. Has enough humour to mitigate the murder aspect.

MattDamon · 02/09/2023 11:42

Bones can be pretty gruesome but lots of humour. It's on Disney+.

Someone on here described this as 'Felicity Cutesy and Ma Larkin bickering in twin beds'. A perfect review. Lovely, gentle, ridiculous viewing though. I long for one I've not seen.

Oh that was me! Fame at last 😂

Beyond paradise
Death in paradise
Agatha Raisin
Miss Fischer
The Mallorca files
Sherlock
Professor T (funny and same actors Ben M as DIP series 1&2)
Rosemary and Thyme - ridiculous but easy for 9 year old. Same as Shakespeare & Hathaway.
Broken wood Mysteries

Vera - took dark as was Cuckoo Calling
Jonathan Creek

Reading wise
Agatha Raisin
Agatha Frost etc

fuzzyelbow · 02/09/2023 11:58

I'm enjoying Ragdoll at the moment.

Lostmyway86 · 02/09/2023 12:46

Jonathan Creek still one of my favs.

mogtheexcellent · 02/09/2023 13:15

Another aurora teagarden fan here. I think they are on channel 5 catch up but loads are on youtube. Pure fluffy nonsense as by hallmark. The books are much grittier but still a good uncomplicated read.

Only murders in the building is glorious purely because of martin short. His facial expressions crack me up.

Why didnt they ask evans is excellent. Also enjoy macdonald and dodds. Mallorca files, the coroner etc.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/09/2023 13:57

I adored Jonathan creek

Sadly I used to love Lewis- but refuse to watch re runs because of LaurenceFox and his revolting views

thesurreyyouth · 02/09/2023 14:43

I enjoyed reading DCI Banks books. You may be able to find tv episodes with Stephen Tompkinson on one of the platforms

Riverlee · 02/09/2023 14:48

Morse/Lewis/Endeavour

lLaw and Order UK - slightly more gritty than cosy but good series

SwirlyShirly · 02/09/2023 14:50

The fall? It was a short series but very good I thought.

Lalgarh · 02/09/2023 14:50

Columbo absolutely

PerkingFaintly · 02/09/2023 14:54

Van der Valk - the original series. Showing currently, but can't remember which channel (Drama?).

Second George Gently.

GrumpyPanda · 02/09/2023 14:57

Another vote for Miss Fisher.

A pp mentioned Cadfael - they're available on DVD or for free on YouTube. YouTube also has loads of old Dorothy Sayers episodes.

Concentrating on well-made and ignoring 'cosy' and 'British' - which may be useful to you as you won't waste your time on them if 'cosy' is the absolute necessity:

The Bridge - best crime series ever (Swedish/Danish)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1733785/

Paris 1900 and the sequel Paris 1905 - French. Excellent, but very gory.

Reverting to British, but again, not cosy:
The Sweeney. Gritty in terms of plots, language and social atittudes, but none of the currently mandatory closeups of corpses and post mortems. Distilled essence of the 1970s, which means it's full of casual sexism and many other -isms. I watched a lot of them during lockdown and absolutely loved them.

The Bridge (TV Series 2011–2018) ⭐ 8.6 | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

1h | 15

Hetty Wainthropp Investigates is fun and light hearted

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 02/09/2023 15:21

If it was Edinburgh and not an island, was it Case Histories? Jason Isaacs played the main character and he had a young daughter.

TarquinOliverNimrod · 02/09/2023 15:28

Agatha Raisin ticks all your boxes. So well
made, amusing and a bit silly. Feel good, cosy tele.

PictureConsequences · 02/09/2023 15:29

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/09/2023 09:15

The Sixth Commandment- not cosy though

No and slow to get going (I thought) but very good overall. It's not graphic but is a true story, plus it stars Timothy Spall and Anne Reid.

Briandouglas · 02/09/2023 15:49

I haves Bones on repeat! Some of the bodies are a little graphic but I love it anyway, on Disney +

Lucienandjean · 02/09/2023 15:54

The Doctor Blake Mysteries. Set in 1950s/60s Australia. I loved it so much my username is 2 of the characters 😍.
