Looking for a well-made, cosy murder that I might have missed.

I LOVE Midsomer, loved Magpie Murders, thoroughly enjoy Death in Paradise (even though it's nonsense). Used to enjoy Doc Martin, back in the day. LOVED Broadchurch.
Found Vera a bit bleak, though it was very well done. Loved the Alan Davies magician windmill one but the kids find it dated. Didn't enjoy Shakespeare & Hathaway.
Quite enjoyed that one on the Scottish island with the policeman and his daughter.

Enjoyed Lewis. Enjoyed Endeavor.

What have I missed? Maybe a stand-alone, or a mini-series?

Assume I have been down a well for the past 3 years and have not had access to British TV or media. What fun, well-made cosy murders or mysteries might I enjoy?

I don’t know how ‘dark’ you’re after.

But if you like episodic, years ago I really loved Monk.

don’t know if it’s showing anywhere though.

I absolutely love The Brokenwood Mysteries, it's my favourite at the moment. Also Murdoch Mysteries, Dr Blake, and most of what has already been mentioned.

merryhouse · 02/09/2023 09:34

Murder on the Blackpool Express/Death on the Tyne/Dial M for Middlesborough

There's also a follow-on series but I haven't seen that.

The Cadfael mysteries weren't as good as the books (no idea where you'd find them anyway).

Have you seen the Joan Hickson Miss Marple? Mandatory viewing back in 1986 ;-) Oh, and ditto the Wimsey series - Strong Poison is the first but they appear to be calling it A Dorothy L Sayers Mystery nowadays.

Ariela · 02/09/2023 09:34

The Coroner - it's available on Britbox/Amazon Prime only at the moment I think . Sometimes is on UKTVPlay but not currently (That's the one with Claire Goose and Matt Burdock, not 'Coroner' the Canadian series - edited to add)
Re Midsomer they've just started running series 24 on ITV, so only 1 or 2 so far - we're watching because we're in Midsomer County filming area one episode was filmed very locally and we love spotting the local sights

Bluetoesnewtoes · 02/09/2023 09:36

Shakespeare and Hathaway on the BBC I like it and filmed on location in Stratford upon Avon two excellent actors in the main roles

ThomasHardyPerennial · 02/09/2023 09:38

Young inspector Montalbano is very good, think I watched that on iplayer. Have you seen Scott and Bailey, op?

merryhouse · 02/09/2023 09:39

"That one on the Scottish island" - was that Hamish MacBeth? it's a long time ago but I don't remember him having a daughter (or it being an island tbf). Anyway if not that's worth a try.

Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) has the added bonus of a young Lovely David being a git in the first episode.

Someone's already mentioned Only Murders in the Building, which I know H really enjoyed.

Communionmom · 02/09/2023 09:41

You tube often had episodes of Hallmark mysteries which are usually murder in small town America where the local florist/chef/teacher helps the police solve the murder. They’re my perfect lazy day mystery.

Longlive · 02/09/2023 09:42

Karen Pirie on ITV based on a Val McDirmid book

Icepinkeskimo · 02/09/2023 09:46

Oldies but still goodies
Whitcliffe
Public Eye on Talking Pictures just brilliant

DollyPartum · 02/09/2023 09:50

Second only murders in the building.
I am currently on series 2 and loving it

Beeinalily · 02/09/2023 09:54

Father Brown, and the Aurora Teagarden mysteries. That's two separate things by the way, although I for one would love to see a crossover! 😀

Wanderingowl · 02/09/2023 09:58

Not British but if you enjoy very surprisingly well thought out plotting and high level puzzles, The Afterparty is kind of amazing. The basic premise is 'unreliable narrator,' so events are described differently by each suspect and over time you can work out which discrepancies in the various retellings are innocent and which are a sign of someone lying. But on top of that every episode is stuffed with clues, some within the characters' universe and some just for the audience. There are coded messages in unexpected places and finding them yourself or seeing them pointed out online afterwards is staggering. Things like Playfair codes hidden on background imagery, morse code happening in the background of a scene, semaphore in photographs, the phonetic alphabet used throughout an episode to reveal a clue, etc.

Came on to recommend Only Murders in the Building - brilliantly made.

For very light hearted try Psych.

Only Murders in the Building

lavenderlou · 02/09/2023 10:26

Grantchester?

JoanChitty · 02/09/2023 10:29

Grace and my favourite, Inspector George Gently

MorrisZapp · 02/09/2023 10:35

Miss Scarlet and the Duke is unthreatening Victoriana featuring a suspiciously well groomed young lady private detective and a dour but hot Scottish policeman who pretends to disapprove of her. No swearing, lots of cosy scenes and a lovely blue colour theme. Think there's four seasons of it.

JellyBabyToManual · 02/09/2023 10:39

Professor T?

RampantIvy · 02/09/2023 10:39

Rosemary and Thyme

MerryBeard · 02/09/2023 10:41

If you like Father Brown then Sister Boniface is similar - just pure tosh but lovely to look at and very silly.

Another vote for Agatha Raisin (it's very funny and cosy, don't let the name put you off), The Coroner (Claire Goose version - just excellent, no idea why they stopped it) and McDonald and Dodds too.

Mrs Bradley Investigates is an oldie but a goodie and has Neil Dudgeon of Midsomer fame and the fabulous Diana Rigg in her absolute element. No idea where you might find that.

Rosemary and Thyme

Someone on here described this as 'Felicity Cutesy and Ma Larkin bickering in twin beds'. A perfect review. Lovely, gentle, ridiculous viewing though. I long for one I've not seen.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/09/2023 10:43

I used to like the Mallorca files

RampantIvy · 02/09/2023 10:47

I'm gutted that the current series of Brokenwood Mysteris has finished. I miss Mrs Marlow and Jared from the older series.I

Father Brown played a cameo role in one of the Sister Boniface stories @MerryBeard .

I feel like I have found my people on this thread Smile

MerryBeard · 02/09/2023 10:53

@RampantIvy Yes, I saw Father Brown pop up. It was like a visit from an old friend.

OH - just thought of Grantchester.

The Last Detective with Peter Davison is an oldie but a goodie. Very much reminded me of Jonathan Creek so might seem very dated for youngsters.
