And yes. Aziraphale would never.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/07/2023 16:42

I did love Bildad the Shuhite, with his twin interests in shoe making and obstetrics. And the Angel Gabriel's credentials in human birth from being in the Garden of Eden.

I think the story of Job was probably my favourite of the mini episodes.

RagzRebooted · 30/07/2023 17:17

DD and I just binge watched the entire season today. She was delighted when they kissed! DD also guessed the Beezlebub and Gabriel plotline really early on, with the fly clue.
I agree the ending was annoying and unlikely. I also thought a few of the episodes were unnecessary padding.
6/10

Apologies in advance as I have nobody in real life to talk to about this, so I'm just going to ramble!

I loved the book and the first season, and I think the partnership between Crowley and Aziraphale was definitely the high point in both, but there were lots of other well-drawn characters there to balance it out. It feels a bit self-indulgent to focus on them so much this season, especially in the flashback scenes, which felt quite overlong in places. I think they could have made the same points in a much more succinct way. Aside from the angel Muriel (whom I really liked), I didn't really feel like any of the newer characters were interesting or fun enough to balance them this time around. The Nina and Maggie relationship didn't seem to have any depth to it; I guess maybe that was kind of the point, that it was just being used as a proxy for Aziraphale and Crowley, and I liked that they were called out on that at the end of the series, but it still felt quite contrived.

I loved the opening scene seeing Crowley as an angel. I also loved Aziraphale driving the Bentley and his acknowledgement that he lets Crowley rescue him because it makes him happy. I think I prefer stuff like that when the insight into their dynamic is a bit more subtle, as it was in the first season.

I don't know how I feel about the ending. It seems to undo so much of Aziraphale's character development from the first season where he slowly comes to realise that Heaven isn't all it's cracked up to be and he and Crowley decide they're on their own side. It feels like a bit of a cheap reason to create drama and heartbreak and make people demand a third season in a way that doesn't seem to fit the characters. Maybe it will make more sense if they do get to explain it in season 3?

What a load of absolute GARBAGE!!

First half was ok (not great but ok) but the second half was frankly ridiculous and the ending has made me so bloody mad. I am amazed Rob Wilkins was involved and allowed it to be connected to TP, it was an insult to the man. I had wondered who wrote which bits in GO and now I know.....all the funny, intelligent and well crafted parts.....so probably most of it. The loss of TP was so glaringly obvious.

In the original story, despite what the shippers would have you believe, there was strong friendship between A and C because they were literally the only two beings who knew what their lives were and had been like. There was never any indication of romantic love but because a bunch of idiots online wanted it to happen, Gaiman sold out to them.

The writing was abysmal, the story line was utter crap and some of the acting was so bad I was embarrassed on behalf of the actors because it must have come from the director as these are all actors I would have considered good before I watched this.

I was really looking forward to it and predisposed to like it but I am appalled at how bad it was.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 30/07/2023 21:42

I liked it overall I think. I love Crowley and Aziraphale, and would enjoy watching them just go for a walk or something together 😄, so maybe I'm not particularly objective.

I didn't love that C and A's relationship was made romantic at the end. Their relationship had spanned the whole of time, and had survived so many different things. It seems reductive / simplistic to change it into a romantic relationship after all of that.

At the end, Aziraphale looked sad for a while, then he smiled at the very end. Maybe he has a plan...?

LuckOfTheDrawer · 30/07/2023 21:52

Oh, and the kiss - since it was happening anyway, I thought Oh well, I bet it will be a good one. But I didn't buy it at all in the end.

I suppose re the whole romantic relationship thing, I thought that wasn't how Crowley thought about the relationship at all, and that Aziraphale sometimes thought about it in that sense a little, but ultimately knew it was bigger than that.

Badbudgeter · 30/07/2023 21:54

Bloody hell I thought they were releasing it weekly. I will definitely be binge watching.

DD was convinced they'd kiss, I kept saying they wouldn't because Angel love is more spiritual and not physical. Like they don't really have genders. I was annoyed to be wrong about that. I also never picked up on the romantic aspect when I read the book, but I could have just missed it.

I'm glad I was able to binge it in a day rather than having to wait for episodes, because it was quite disappointing. I'm tempted to re-read the book now but I'm worried I'd get more annoyed!

TyneTeas · 30/07/2023 22:22

It didn't even look like a good kiss

Have only seen the first episode, I'm disappointed it's deathly dull. Like a pp said it was deffo Pratchett who wrote the best bit of the book. I'm still annoyed they left out the other 4 horsemen from the first book tbh. I don't like gaiman at all, his Dr who episode was shite.

You didnt miss it, it wasnt there.

Its a whole new generation of people who think that two people cant be true close loving friends without being in love. Its the "Shipper" thing......like how so many people wanted Draco and Harry or Hermione or whoever to get together in HP. But instead of following the story of the characters, which is that they managed thousands of years without rummaging in each other underwear, Gaiman sold out for popularity. Like I said above, I am amazed that Rob Wilkins signed off on this as Exec Producer.

user9630721458 · 30/07/2023 22:50

I enjoyed some of it, but agree that the romance angle just felt false and contrived. I don't think angels and demons are interested in romantic love, seems too human and personal.

Yes, I liked their friendship. Seems more unselfish than lust and true long lasting friendship is rare.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/07/2023 23:01

Oh and dont get me started on Beelzebub and Gabriel!

That could actually have been a really good story if it hadnt been lifted straight off a page of Bridget Jones Diary. Formulaic predictable and frankly embarrassing.

nocoolnamesleft · 30/07/2023 23:11

Yeah, it did feel like selling out to pressure from series-only never read the book fans.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/07/2023 23:15

I'm another one who rolled her eyes at the kiss (and I agree, it didn't look like a great kiss anyway!)

AffIt · 31/07/2023 01:39

Gaiman is such a fucking sell-out. The man is basically a walking ego.

WHY has no studio got the balls to employ a really good, strong editor in any project he's involved in?

He jumped the shark in American Gods (his own fucking novel!), now this... worried for the next series of The Sandman (again, his own work, but undoubtedly he'll overegg the whole thing again).

The only good adaptation he's ever been involved with was the BBC version of Neverwhere, and I think he was only a producer on that, as opposed to EP / showrunner.

Really disappointed by this and sad for the memory of PTerry (and also a bit saddened by what feels like a demotion of the wonderful John Finnemore to 'junior writer of jokes about cakes').

I agree completely about Gaiman. I feel like he's more interested in getting adulation from younger fans than he is in staying true to his own work. I was worried he was going to do pretty much exactly this. Once I read that this season is about getting the pieces in place for season 3 (which, if it ever happens, would apparently be based on the stuff he and Terry Pratchett actually discussed as the substance of the sequel), it made a depressing amount of sense; none of this is from Pratchett, it's all Gaimain giving the tumblr crowd something to wank to.

Also, I love John Finnemore and was so excited to hear he was going to be part of this. When they first announced it I thought that they couldn't have picked a better person to collaborate on it, but I really couldn't detect much of his influence at all.

JaukiVexnoydi · 31/07/2023 06:28

I have only watched the first episode so far but I read an interview with Gaiman that said that he and Terry Pratchett had worked together on an overall plot for a sequel, but that plot couldn't follow on straight off from season 1 of the tv series because of the way that series 1 diverged (not unreasonably imo) from the book. However the workshopping for season 2 of the TV series was done in a way so as to make sure that the plot he'd worked on with Prachett would be feasible fot season 3.

So I am prepared to put up with pretty much anything in season 2, knowing that it's just preparing the way.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 31/07/2023 09:21

I’ve been thinking about this series and I think part of the problem is that the streaming services will only commission the third series if enough people watch the second. If you know you need three seasons to tell the full story then you have to do something “dramatic” in the second season to keep up the buzz and the fan engagement. You can’t just do slow burn character development. They had create a pretty big hook to keep fans demanding another season and NG went for what the fans wanted. He now has the classic “will they live happily ever after…” question left hanging

gettingolderbutcooler · 31/07/2023 09:40

Not as good as season one.
I also loved the actress playing Muriel!
I thought the different story lines were rather forced, and the gabriel/ beelzebub thing was ridiculous.
The Crowley/ Aziraphale kiss was very staged and corny and the ending was disappointing 😞

user9630721458 · 31/07/2023 11:48

Muriel was really charming. I hope she learns a lot from reading the books and turns out actually rather clever, instead of 'not very bright!'
