TRIGGER

SUICIDE

This is based on true life events

will be shown on wed and thur x 4w

warning for those who may be effected so don’t read/watch

Michelle Carter was a teenager living in the eponymous middle-class suburb Plainville in Massachusetts, when she struck up a long-distance relationship with Conrad Roy, another teen who lived an hour away and who, like her, experienced mental health struggles.

Two years later on 13th July 2014, 18-year-old Conrad Roy died by suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in his truck.

Carter, then 17-years-old, contacted Roy's mother (who was only vaguely aware that Roy had had a girlfriend prior to his death), before introducing herself to Roy's family at his memorial.

Less than a year later in February 2015, Carter would be indicted for the involuntary manslaughter of Conrad Roy, after his phone – and the text messages exchanged with Carter – was discovered by the police.

The unprecedented 'texting-suicide' case proved a landmark one, as it was the first time a person went on trial for manslaughter via text message.

As detailed by Esquire (https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a57125/michelle-carter-trial/), the judge was presented with 317 pages of messages between Michelle Carter and Conrad Roy. The latter frequently brought up the topic of suicide, but Carter did not attempt to dissuade
her then-boyfriend from death by suicide – in fact, quite the reverse.

If u don't do it now you're never gonna do it," she wrote in one message (via CNN (https://edition.cnn.com/2017/06/08/us/text-message-suicide-michelle-carter-conrad-roy/index.html)).

On the evening of the 12th July 2014, shortly before Conrad Roy's death, he had two phone calls with Carter.

Although detectives had no record of what was said during the phone calls, they tracked down a text message Carter sent to a friend, in which Carter appeared to confess to encouraging Conrad Roy to climb back into his truck.

"I could have stopped him," the text read. "I was on the phone with him and he got out of the car because it was working and he got scared and I fking told him
to get back in. I could of stopped him but I f
king didnt. All I had to say was I love you [sic].

Following a two-week trial, Judge Lawrence Moniz declared Michelle Carter guilty of involuntary manslaughter, stating that her "failure to act [and prevent Conrad Roy's death], where she had a self-created duty, constituted each and all wanton and reckless conduct".

Carter was sentenced to two and a half years of prison time and five years of probation. The case was subsequently the subject of HBO documentary I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs Michelle Carter.

Carter was released in January 2020 – just over three months early due to good behaviour – while her probation period ended in August 2022.

Did Words Kill? Behind the Scenes of the Shocking Michelle Carter Verdict

Earlier this year, a young woman from a small town in Massachusetts stood trial for homicide. Prosecutors argued that her calls and texts fueled her boyfriend's suicide. The verdict answered the question of whether speech alone was enough to make her g...

I'm Actually wondering if she made him do it for the sympathy

I totally think this. She was channelling grief into the mirror FFS. Practising it. Then fine when turned away from the mirror.

JaneJeffer · 28/07/2023 16:22

I think so Blondes She's revelling in the grieving girlfriend act but it's like she's so far from reality she doesn't realise what she has actually done yet.

Her family seem very cold and formal and her school pals aren't very nice either.

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/07/2023 19:51

Glad you all agree

Kinda I'd like a Munchausen by proxy but with death and not illness

Only watched Ep1 and it’s a very hard watch. I’m wondering if she was actually like this in real life though. No one really knows how she behaved in her own room. But there’s no denying those texts are beyond belief. Can’t believe it’s a true story. She comes across as incredibly self-absorbed with incredibly low EQ. I’m not surprised her friends aren’t great as I’m imagining she’s not interested in anything they’ve ever done/doing. Wonder if she was diagnosed with anything?

From an article in Harpers Bazaar:
"The pair bonded over their mental healthh_ struggles. Carter was isolated at school, and suffered from anxiety and an eating disorder that – during the time period of her relationship with Roy – necessitated a stay at a residential clinic. Roy himself had already made several suicide attempts"

It really is unbelievable. What on earth was she thinking. I don’t think we can blame her own MH for this. It comes across as a power, manipulation type thing. I just can’t get me head around it. Her prison time was very minimal wasn’t it?

Blondeshavemorefun · 29/07/2023 00:18

I think you are right @NotDonna

It's a power game

butterpuffed · 29/07/2023 18:50

Yes, she loved the power and thinking she was important when she took over from Rob with the memorial event . She seemed to think it'd make her popular with everyone as she hadn't been beforehand , you could tell by her school 'friends' .

There's a documentary called (I think) I Love You, Now Die on Sky which is pretty interesting. It's a two-parter.

NotDonna · 02/08/2023 15:30

Thanks Blondes I've set it to record in case I miss it

purpleme12 · 02/08/2023 22:44

It's a bit jarring because we know it happened but it's also a dramatisation. So I can't help thinking which bits about Michelle's character and what she did are true and what aren't

NotDonna · 02/08/2023 22:51

I’ve just watched the 2 part documentary on Sky ‘I love you, now die’ and it’s much less dramatised, with original footage and very interesting interviews with various people. Seems she may have most likely lied about insisting he go back in the car. During the 2 years of ‘dating’ & texting he attempted suicide a few times, wasn’t always nice and she lied an awful lot to her friends about him (sex, rape etc). It came across that whilst she did encourage his suicide in his final few days (she certainly hadn’t over the years prior & had in fact encouraged help as you’d expect) it was portrayed that it wasn’t in a calculated manipulative manner as we may be thinking. That’s at least how it came across. Still incredibly hard to even begin to understand what she was thinking! Just so so very tragic!

NotDonna · 02/08/2023 22:53

Exactly @purpleme12

Roussette · 03/08/2023 06:16

I tried to watch it last night, but the frequency of adverts drove me completely bonkers. It was like every five minutes!

I got halfway and will do catch up when I'm not so tired

purpleme12 · 03/08/2023 06:45

Three lots of adverts in an hour's programme. The normal amount

I think you're right @purpleme12 . The series is six hours , after all, so there must be a fair bit of padding .

ageingdisgracefully · 03/08/2023 17:07

So we're only half way through? I'm enjoying it, but it seems very padded out.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/08/2023 17:10

Agree seems very passed out

Ben Peter and Ann was 4hrs but an hour of court

This is 6

Yes w elbow the outcome but does seem long winders

She does seem unhinged

Tho

Saying that. Those who have watched the I love you now die - seem to have a different view

Maybe I need to watch that as well
