I was surprised that Asmaa hadn’t had GOTW before! Somehow I assumed she must have had it, but no.

I got caught down a YouTube rabbit hole the other day, a Victorian Singer sewing machine that had been found in a chicken shed, and was restored to gleaming working condition. The really extraordinary thing was watching the machine being dismantled, I couldn’t believe how many little bits and bobs it takes to make the mechanics of it work, and how they are all hidden away inside. I was hoping there would be a shot of all the pieces laid out ready for re assembly, but there wasn’t.

Useless at links but if you google YouTube sewing machine restoration you will find it.

On another subject - the music on this episode was so nostalgic! DH and I were both having massive 90s nostalgia pangs all the way through. I’m thinking about making a playlist 😂

Sewing bee do a Spotify playlist of the music they use each episode. They post the link on twitter

I was sorry to see Lizzie leave, but then I’m not sure really who else would have gone if not her.

I would like them to do a repair theme. I just took a gillet to have a zip replaced and the fabric around it need repair.

i think it would be a good challenge to have the sewers repair something, or let something out or take something in.

I thought the Prodigy "hair" was spot on. Although I thought it was meant to be inspired by, rather than that person in dress form.

I thought that was so unfair. It was not about the quality of sewing or creativity, it was about who.made it easy for judges to guess.

2 union jack dresses were nothing special but they were easy to guess so they were ranked higher than Lizzie and Asma's.

Floralnomad · 06/07/2023 15:03

I really liked Asmas dress , however I do think that they should swop the models around as using last night as an example Tony’s dress on Asmas model would have looked fantastic and her dress on his model would have looked pretty rubbish . I’m not knocking bigger models but I do think it should be a fair playing field for all involved .

123ZYX · 06/07/2023 16:25

I was surprised they kept their usual models this week - given it was based on 90s supermodels, it would have made sense to bring in models with that shape - there wasn't much diversity in the shape of super models in the 90s.

ArcaneWireless · 06/07/2023 17:02

I still love Tony the Post. I loved the way he complimented Asmaa.

I saw one on Facebook and was amazed at just how many parts there were. I wonder if we watched the same video? This one the chap remade some of the metal parts like bolts etc. Stunning labour of love.

I think Asmaa deserved gotw. It would have been nice to see the back detailing though as they didn't really show that. I was so sad to see Lizzy go :( but as soon as I saw her hem and the bust line of her dress I thought nope. I thought Mia might have been on danger this week.

My dd didn't recognise Tony without his hat! He just looked all wrong!

The one I saw seemed to clean up and reuse all the parts, even the tiniest screws, the sewing machine dated from the 1870s I believe. You didn’t actually see the restorer at all, which was a shame as they were an amazing craftsman.

Brefugee · 06/07/2023 19:49

It really annoyed me that Tony's model was wearing rubbish and lumpy undergarments, it made the dress look worse than it was.
I think Asmaa's dress would have looked good on a curvy model or a tall thin one,

Lizzie went at the right time i think - I'm sure she's a cracking sewist, but the time pressure really gets to her. The cargo pants were just to test fly zips and bellows pockets, because to me cargo pants have pockets to put your hands in and pockets on the bum too. All the pockets. But if they'd done proper cargo pants, they would have been there a week.

As for what I'd have them sew? a box pleated skirt with waistband and invisible zip. Lined.

MouseMinge · 06/07/2023 21:42

I loved it when Tony praised Asmaa's dress as well. It's one of the things I love about this show, even when some of the themes get a bit tedious, is that although they all would presumably love to win, they've all got each other's backs and it's just so bloody lovely. We see it when people are leaving too. It's not that they're pissed off that they're not going to win but that they'll miss all the other sewers. That's why I love my Wednesday evenings so much.

Bouledeneige · 06/07/2023 21:47

I agree about the look and shape of the models. My DD and I discussed it. I think it's great that today model shapes are more diverse, but they simply weren't in the 90s. But Asmaah absolutely knocked it out of the park. She absolutely deserved that win. She won by a country mile.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/07/2023 06:56

Sophie Dahl was famous for her fuller figure but I think she was actually a size 12. They did show a picture the real plus size model from the 90s though. I can't remember her name and had never heard of her so she wasn't that famous.

Maireas · 07/07/2023 07:10

Asmaa's dress was just stunning.

Brefugee · 07/07/2023 07:15

i do think it's unfair to give a plus sized model to someone, they are harder to fit in some types of outfit. Even if you are curvy yourself. I do think they should mix it up so we can see that they can fit a vey slim model, one with a bigger bust maybe or one with wider hips and a plus sized - over the weeks.

Brefugee · 07/07/2023 07:16

also thinking about 90s icons? I'd probably have gone for Björk with a slinky dress with a fluffy cropped top (as in the video where she jumps around on the back of a flatbed truck)

FriendsDrinkBook · 07/07/2023 07:21

I think Vicki requested a model close to her own size.

FriendsDrinkBook · 07/07/2023 07:21

I think Vicki requested a model close to her own size.

I didn't know they could do that - it makes sense, i guess.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/07/2023 07:47

When Vicki was talking to her model she was saying something about how she fits to her own body so it was probably more familiar to her with a model of a similar body shape.

AnImaginaryCat · 07/07/2023 08:24

Just caught up (watched after coming in from an all night rave...)

I'm sorry to see Lizzie go. Not sure it was justified, especially as the two of them made out there was no contest as to who goes.

Not in with the Tony love (at all) but appreciate he has talent, though absolutely cannot understand why he did so well in thr transformation challenge. His union jack dress was rubbish - even out of the two he somehow come on top. It looked like someone I could have made. Dis it do well because just because the judges knew who the 90 icon it was?

Also 90s icon thing bit unfair on the younger ones. I know the 90s were only last decade but apparently some adults weren't alive during it.

HeadNorth · 07/07/2023 09:18

I’m also not getting the Tony love. I didn’t think his dress was especially 90s - more 80s, if anything. It was ugly and looked like it would be uncomfortable and sweaty to wear.

Djangor3725 · 07/07/2023 10:34

It's odd but despite watching every series it is only on this series that I realised that they have the same model each week so they really ought to be pretty good at the fit in the final challenge by now as they know the measurements, plus their choice of pattern will be influenced by the model's body shape for the final challenge. The judges were very complimentary about Tony's construction of his dress but it didn't fit & was unflattering on the model. Glad that Vicki did well this week and sorry that Lizzie had a bad week.

Brefugee · 07/07/2023 11:01

i thought his was more 80s too. But. That seam was spot on. Not easy.
Having said that, scuba is going to get very old very quickly so i hope he doesn't use it again

I thought that on the show Lizzie looked weak. But i think from looking at her instagram she is one of the stronger ones. I really think it's about time. And she said herself that she'd done too much chatting. I guess like me, the 90s was a really good time for her.

2Rebecca · 07/07/2023 11:03

I think to make it fair all models should be a similar size especially if you're going to have a 90s supermodel week.
With the no themes you could still have a type of clothing each week skirt week, blouse/ shirt week, bra week, ballgown week, winter casual dress week, trouser week, dungaree week etc but not the silly themes. I'd probably keep children's week. They could have a cosplay and dressing up week as people do do that but some themes are just silly.

SBAM · 07/07/2023 12:09

I have wondered what level of choice the contestants get with picking their model - some models appear to have measurements which would be very close to a standard pattern size, which would in theory make the fitting portion of the challenge much easier.

I don’t mind the theme weeks, but the transformation round is not great and sometimes feels like they’re running out of ideas. Perhaps it could be occasionally switched up with an alterations round - provide them with a garment that fits the mannequin poorly and see what they can do eg. A bridesmaid dress thats smaller or larger than the mannequin but it needs to become a bridesmaid outfit that fits properly. Or a suit jacket that’s too big for a model, can they see what needs to be altered and make it work? A 45min challenge to hem a pair of trousers?
Or a repair round - replace a broken zip in something? Patch a hole?
