asamaa Is great

MouseMinge · 05/07/2023 21:55

Oh dear. I think Lizzie is toast.

MouseMinge · 05/07/2023 21:56

Asmaa must be garment of the week. Phwoar!

Binglebong · 05/07/2023 21:57

Asmaa's 😲

littlbrowndog · 05/07/2023 21:57

Jeez Patrick. What are you saying

HeadNorth · 05/07/2023 21:58

Lizzie had such a bad week, after looking like a potential finalist, such a shame.

littlbrowndog · 05/07/2023 21:59

Well done asmaa

MouseMinge · 05/07/2023 22:00

I really thought Lizzie would be in the final but I guess all it takes is one bad week and she had a bad week.

Binglebong · 05/07/2023 22:01

I've just spotted the camouflage pattern Vicky is wearing - cats!

CwmYoy · 05/07/2023 22:03

Sad to see Lizzie go. Loved Asmaa's dress of the week.

yesbutnobut · 05/07/2023 22:10

Asmara's looked amazing but why did we not see the back of the dress? It looked to have an elaborate and striking strap design so why weren't we shown it? Did something go wrong?

Spudlet · 05/07/2023 22:11

Asmaa’s made to measure was amazing, there would have had to have been a stewards enquiry if she hadn’t have got garment of the week with that. The fit! 🤩

Poor Lizzie, but she had an absolute shocker. Knew she was toast the second I saw that hem on the gold dress 😕

The 90s was ten minutes ago and anyone who says otherwise is just lying.

Agreed. My daughter claims to be over 30, which is arrant nonsense as just yesterday she was starting school.

<Nurse! The screens!>

Delighted for Asmaa. Hard to say now who might be in the final with her.

You see it before the judging, just after they finish sewing and the models all do a twirl.
All straps present and correct, all nicely evenly spaced.

What I discovered from this is that I don’t remember the nineties. I was certainly there. I left school in 91 and was a student in Manchester in 93-96. I don’t remember anything. I would have really struggled with the icon, I couldn’t think of anyone. And it’s was a rave 90s, what about Britpop?
Also I remember cargo trousers being uncomfortable. They were all too tight on my thighs.

Sausagenbacon · 05/07/2023 23:01

Well, I thought Asmaa's dress was hideous. That horrible plether fishtail - awful. I loved Lauren's.
Someone has mentioned the Woolpatch podcast, and I'd second that. They have one reviewing the programme and a second one discussing some of the techniques used.

ArcaneWireless · 06/07/2023 02:03

Tony’s seam on that frock was great but too much of a cling for me.

Asmaa’s deserved its spot.

I haven’t warmed to Lizzie and didn’t think I’d be bothered when her peg went shoogly.

I was. I didn’t like seeing her upset. She just had a shocker poor bugger.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/07/2023 07:48

I remember the 90s, but next to nothing about the music or fashion. My children were born close together in the early 90s so for a long time everything was a haze of sleepless nights. Can't remember exactly what Lizzie said about the Tories - was it rejoicing about Mrs Thatcher's resignation or the Tories finally losing an election? Long gap between those two things. Mrs T departed after the poll tax riots - 1990? John Major held on by a whisker at the General Election in 1992 and then limped along, sabotaged by the Eurosceptics in his own party (this may seem familiar to younger readers), until Blair triumphed in 1997. That was when Cool Britannia, so called, got under way.

upinaballoon · 06/07/2023 08:09

"That was when Cool Britannia, so called, got under way."

And they left office about 13 years later saying there was no money left and the people would have to be put into special measures and stop buying badly-cut shoddy old rubbish off the peg and get some lessons from their grannies about how to cut out on the straight of the fabric* and sew a bit, and that you can hand stitch a seam in a fairly short time even if you can't afford a sewing machine.

  • except when they wanted to cut out on the cross Mmm, must look at Tony's clingy dress again.

Why all the themes? Why can't we just have nice current clothing to inspire us?

This is not a semi-angry challenging question, just a matter-of-fact one. What would you ask them to do and how long would you give them to do it? Just one round. (Those last three words aren't a proper sentence. I feel a bit bad about that.)

FriendsDrinkBook · 06/07/2023 10:13

It's interesting to see a 'history bit' about a decade I remember well. Wrt combats/cargo pants I don't recall wearing them until 2002 when I owned an embroidered pair from topshop that I'd wear with heels.

In the 90s myself and my friends (I was a teenager) were mainly in adidas 3 stripe , kappa and bootcut levis.

The shoes were my favourite. Mega platforms from shellys and ravel the most ridiculous neon trainers. I've not grown out of this yet I confess.

Spudlet · 06/07/2023 10:31

On another subject - the music on this episode was so nostalgic! DH and I were both having massive 90s nostalgia pangs all the way through. I’m thinking about making a playlist 😂

Dinopawus · 05/07/2023 21:50

For praising Asmaa I mean.

Yes - I thought that was lovely, too.

Ans Asmara's dress was gorgeous! 50 years ago I would have looked a knockout in that. (Would barely get an arm into it now.)

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/07/2023 11:00

Was sorry to lose Lizzie - poor woman, she looked stricken!

I thought Vicki would be the one to go, but she had an amazing week.

Some lovely MTM dresses. I was wishing I was young and slender again.

viques · 06/07/2023 11:17

I was surprised that Asmaa hadn’t had GOTW before! Somehow I assumed she must have had it, but no.

I got caught down a YouTube rabbit hole the other day, a Victorian Singer sewing machine that had been found in a chicken shed, and was restored to gleaming working condition. The really extraordinary thing was watching the machine being dismantled, I couldn’t believe how many little bits and bobs it takes to make the mechanics of it work, and how they are all hidden away inside. I was hoping there would be a shot of all the pieces laid out ready for re assembly, but there wasn’t.
