Late to this… persevered through it but god, it’s awful. Miranda is sooo annoying. All the woke stuff is just so trite.

I am kind of interested in Carrie’s storyline so will watch to the end but I’m not sure why!

Because I am very sad (and work avoidant), I have dusted off the box set and found the episode where Steve and Miranda visit the Brooklyn house for the first time - "Out of the Frying Pan". This is the description of the house for sale ad Steve reads out: 3 bedroom, outdoor space, finished basement - it's an entire house. And it is evidently huge when they go to see it.

I believe Miranda's apartment was on Lexington Avenue - even with a mortgage, she would have made great money on that sale, and Brooklyn was not the trendy, desirable suburb back then that it is now. There's no way that property is not more or less mortgage free and/or worth 3 times the amount they paid for it (provided there's no story that they remortgaged it to prop up Steve's bar business of something).

Miranda invites Steve to bring his mother to live with them in the last episode - I can't see her doing that unless there was room. They have a whole basement to go at for extra space as well. Nobody needs to move out or sleep on the sofa. The Miranda 2.0 martyring herself on the sofa/travelling all over NY to make breakfast for her arse of a son is just a complete contrivance, and an insult to the viewers who've probably watched SATC 50 times and know it doesn't make sense. I think it's been done to fit into a narrative of Miranda being subjugated by all the decisions she made in the past - corporate law, marriage to a man who wasn't her equal, going ahead with her pregnancy, moving out of Manhattan. And being "saved" by the wonder that is Che and the entire gender queer movement and finding her "true self".

Absolutely!
that's such a retcon of Miranda's choices. She was sitting in a gown waiting for a termination and CHOSE to keep Brady on her own, fully as a single parent. She was a kick ass independent woman! She CHOSE Steve too. She had a lovely wealthy boyfriend who she left for Steve who let's not forget had a successful business by then. And she loved her career!

ReeseWitherfork · 14/07/2023 12:12

I can see her getting burnt out by corporate law. I kinda buy the Columbia storyline. The rest… nah. I’m so sick of the “she’s better than steve” narrative. Because I don’t think she was. He made her laugh, they clearly enjoyed each other’s company. And let’s not forget she then chose him AGAIN in the movie.

Gowlett · 14/07/2023 12:28

I’d like to know who is paying due everything in the Miranda / Steve scenario? Their home / lifestyle does not come cheap. She’s given up her career. What’s he doing now?

Harry / Herbert / Seema never seem to be at work either. Bit strange for wealthy NYC high-fliers…

On the money thing… Hated when Carrie just bought that posh apartment then changed her mind. Then moved back to the flat. As if…
How does Jewellery girl afore her huge flat? (I know same was asked when Carrie was a freelance writer!)
When Carrie gave Enid the money. Just doesn’t sit right with me that Carrie married BIG money. I mean, she married for love, right?
And her buying ALL those shoes. No. She loves shoes & would covet a pair back in the day. A spree like that wouldn’t be her style… Even now she has the cash.
So much of it just doesn’t add up. Literally!

Ridemeginger · 14/07/2023 12:29

I think I said this on the other thread, but Miranda's interest in Steve always seemed to increase when she wasn't with him and somebody else was interested in him (much like it was with Skipper). When you watch the movie, and she's writing the pros and cons list before deciding whether to reunite with him on the Brooklyn Bridge, her list of cons are bigger than the pros and she clearly doesn't think he measures up intellectually. I think the narrative with Miranda and Steve was always about Miranda having more head than heart in most of her dealings with the world, but Steve was the one decision that was completely heart driven and irrational, but viscerally real. One of the things she bitterly says to him when they break up in the movie is that she changed who she was for him. I think, at the end of the movie, she concludes that wasn't necessarily a bad thing to have happened.

Miranda 2.0 is just an alien invader body snatcher. Trying to make sense of where her story has gone is ultimately pointless, because it makes zero sense. It's a fever dream conjured up by progressive writers and producers and in particular, Cynthia Nixon, who wants to play out her real world on screen, and is doing it through a much loved fictional character whose memory has all but been destroyed.

Gowlett · 14/07/2023 12:30

And the dinner where nobody turned up & they had to eat all of the lobster etc, that was so tasteless considering COL crisis…

ReeseWitherfork · 14/07/2023 12:44

Gowlett you may be watching the wrong shoe if you don’t enjoy the extravagance. I think that bit is very true to the original! Especially Carrie’s shoe shopping spree. She definitely married Big for love but I think the Carrie we all know and love would have been a fan of the money too.

Gowlett · 14/07/2023 13:05

RW, ah no I love all of that. I’m all about the clothes & the shoes! It’s just jarring in places with AJLT. I enjoy the opulent scenery for sure, but context is key I think. But, you might be right about Carrie & here desire ti be part of a certain echelon of NYC.

yes, spot on. Miranda is ruined for me now. It's like they've introduced a brand new character who looks and sounds like Miranda but is nothing like her at all!

doorstopper123 · 14/07/2023 14:53

starting to see glimmers of the old SATC with carrie meeting unsuitable men, seeing the ladies dating and ONS

Che is not a convincing character. She/They is a 47 year old teenager staying up all night with their mates, smoking pot and gaming? What does Miranda see in they? What does Che see in Miranda? Total mismatch

Miranda's story is not convincing. Successful corp lawyer shopping for a second hand single mattress

Get a hotel. Rent an apartment. Buy a new bed. An Air BNB? Last week carrie gave away a million without a second thought.

Steve and Miranda used to live in a huge house but seems like they're now in a 2 bed flat

The ralph lauren photoshoot was cringe. Rock leaping around on a trampoline for hours. Harry creeping in wearing a wig? Security!

Barold · 14/07/2023 16:33

@Gowlett But she’s not trying to join any echelon - she has always moved in moneyed circles. She tells Berger she ‘used to be a party girl’, she dated Big, she worked at Vogue, her friends have money, Samantha used to get her into all the cool new bars (Bed) and restaurants (Raw), etc.

She’s just spending money that she now has on things she needs (a new apartment that doesn’t remind her of Big - and the old one was pretty fancy) and things she loves (shoes). Just because she didn’t marry him for the money doesn’t mean she wouldn’t spend it.

I don’t think a show about a rich, successful New Yorkers needs to reflect the COL…

Whiskeypowers · 14/07/2023 17:41

last night’s episode was - for me anyway! - just awful. Again.
Carrie is regressing and this coy girly shit with that man who lives in a loft redolent of a derelict Debenhams was embarrassing. She is annoying me than Miranda who I just feel really sad about now in terms of the way CN has derailed the character with her real life agenda.
it’s a show resting on its laurels of the glory days of SATC.
If someone showed the old Carrie and Miranda what they morphed into : self parodies and lost souls with no sense of self anymore they would be horrified.

Agreed.

The reason Carrie didn’t have a deposit for her apartment in SATC was the forty odd pairs of Manolo Blahniks. She didn’t covet expensive shoes, she bought them.

Barold · 14/07/2023 17:58

a loft redolent of a derelict Debenhams

😂

NeedToThinkOfOne · 14/07/2023 17:59

This week’s ep done, spoilers ahead…

I thought the scene with Che up with friends until 3.30am was meant to show symmetry with Miranda’s role as Brady’s parent. They’ve switched Miranda or rather Cynthia has switched to a maternal role, looking after Che’s needs. Ranting on about the feedback from the panel whilst doing the domestic chores of cleaning plates whilst Che sat on the sofa, was a classic parent scenario, in contrast to Brady not really needing her there to make breakfast. Brady looked stable in comparison to Che. Che lighting up and pushing M away as she’s not emotionally mature enough to deal with all. Miranda offers a hug, again in a maternal way, demonstrating maturity. Che doesn’t offer that back, it looks like we’ve reached the point in this season M is going to realise they’re incompatible and the writers and producers have also realised this.

The parting gift to us about their relationship was shoehorned in with the pilot review panel. We were meant to pick up on how it must feel to receive that kind of character assassination from strangers- almost to the point of breaking the fourth wall- it was so obvious Cynthia Nixon had directed the episode.

If I remove all those CheDa scenes, the rest of the episode was probably my favourite so far this season. Our other favourite character was back too; the city itself. The subway, a touch of the ‘fall in New York’ on the trees, overall it was definitely more enjoyable to watch…and to also overthink 😂

Gowlett · 14/07/2023 19:54

Fair enough, good points re. Carrie!
I’ll shelve any thoughts of COL while watching, you’re right, that’s the whole point!
SATC days, I lived that life in Paris. And it all made sense. I need to tune into my NYC self, ha ha…

Lottapianos · 14/07/2023 21:03

'it is a shame Che is such a crap character because Sara Ramirez is actually a decent actor'

She is, and a gorgeous woman. The character is just awful though, more obnoxious every week. The 3am whooping and shouting with mates was awful

Agree that all of Carrie's outfits were stunning again, especially the checked coat and the gold dress with fuchsia jacket 😍

LTW and Anthony were v funny on the dancefloor. Wish Anthony was given more to do

I've been watching this new series with interest, as well as being extremely invested in this thread.

Wow. So the writers and producers have got us all talking. That's for sure. Just wait. I've got a feeling this show, and the various storylines will all make more sense as the series progresses. I have a feeling that all the Che hate, and the indignity over Miranda's personality being taken over by an Alien is all intentional...

Maybe Samantha will come back and sort them all out ( wishful thinking...🤞)

Time will tell!

I think / hope you’re right. Che is not coming across so badly, it must be intentional.

This Miranda is like the fake LA Miranda ‘who am I to judge’

LadyWhineglass · 15/07/2023 08:36

We were watching an old episode of SATC last night. Miranda complained to Steve that they never had sex so she called him up, dragged him out to her apartment, he fell asleep while she was fading around doing something else and so she chucked him out and made him go home. Steve, that should have been a major red flag there for you.

Interesting article about how MPK and Sara Ramirez are handling che this season based on last season's viewers reactions.

Did anyone else find the scene where Miranda was Che’s cheerleader exceptionally irritating? I find Miranda’s new personality much more annoying than Che’s.

Miranda is completely insufferable. Maybe purposely to create some sympathy for Che? It’s not working for me though, I still can’t stand Che!
