Late to this… persevered through it but god, it’s awful. Miranda is sooo annoying. All the woke stuff is just so trite.

I am kind of interested in Carrie’s storyline so will watch to the end but I’m not sure why!

This episode felt better than the last few. The not liking mayo comment from Miranda had me and I’m sure it looked like SJP heavily eye rolling. The scenes with Miranda, Che and Lyle were just awful and embarrassing. Miranda is like some simpering idiot. It’s grim to watch so far removed from her character in SATC.

They are a lot of simpering idiots in this.

For instance all the gasping and shrieking over a man sending a text to Ava.

Miranda's stuttering when talking to Che does my head in. She turns into an absolute bumbling idiot around them.
As much as I dislike Che (and I really, really do) - its more puzzling what Che could possibly see in Miranda as she exists right now.

I very much get Carrie/Petrovsky vibes from the whole thing (Miranda giving up her life and being the travelling partner/left to own devices while Che goes to work on something that is SO important and dominates everything) but from what I have watched so far I don't think the writing is clever enough to be intentionally portraying this.

I don't understand why Cynthia Nixon would want this to be the portrayal of a relationship with a non-binary person. I hope Miranda's real awakening is finding herself.

Carrie does this too. For example when she wants to talk to Gloria Steinem when she comes out to the toilet.

Talking about Miranda buying in Brooklyn does anyone remember when she was looking at properties (I think in the first film?) she says something like ‘white guy with a baby, quick see where he’s going.’ That always made me feel quite uncomfortable.

There were a lot of uncomfortable moments like that. I wonder if AJLT has tried to redeem itself but just not quite got it right.

I'm persevering to the end of this one, just to see, but it's not good at all. I still think this might be the last series.

EachandEveryone · 08/07/2023 14:00

Well it will be if you all keep saying it☹️. Im enjoying it for what it is and I cant be bothered to pick it to pieces. Its just light entertainment for me in a sea of misery.

FluffyCat17 · 08/07/2023 14:53

Episode 3 has still been the best so far for me, as the Big/book stuff was good in that, although overshadowed somewhat by the ridiculous phone in the studio plot.

Am afraid I couldn’t stand the Charlotte and Harry stuff (would she really go with him to the Dr?) and also couldn’t work out why Carrie felt the need to donate at all at the end of the party. She used to have a backbone.

Speaking of backbone, Miranda and Che. Stop it.

The anniversary party was good though, cringy done well.

I am loving reading all this so much
Thankyou for this thread

I was a huge satc fan in my late 20s and early 30s … I am 52 now .
I have been “ car crash “ watching AJLT and also rewatching SATC episodes ( can’t bring myself to rewatch those 2 films especially the one they were in the UAE as I lived 8 years there myself and all I could muster was “ wtaf “ ?

My thoughts ..

Carrie .. gorgeous , aging with graceful dignity and giving total shoes and frock . I sobbed at season 1 when Big died . Amazing acting from SJP. I love every outfit and accessory and consider her a role model . Just loving Carrie in season 1 and 2.

Charlotte
.. to be honest it would be so much easier to like and identify with her character now without the pillow face . But I think huge future possibilities for her now the fillers appear to be settling down . Hope she goes back to working in a gallery

Miranda
… I am beyond disappointed to be honest . There is no way this 50 something Miranda would ever have evolved from the feisty 30something Miranda . Might as well tell our daughters law school is pointless and the 50s are back provided it’s a non binary “ them” you allow to gaslight and control you .

Sex scenes .. unnecessary and hideous . My eyes , my eyes , my eyes Ffs !
Am bloody loving the posts describing the threesome as a “ bundle “

Che …. Selfish and narcissistic .

Harry .. love him tons but he has an annoying wife . I liked Charlotte In satc .. she is just a massive Karen here .

Charlotte’s mate is great value in terms of fashion , but a highly unrealistic character

Carries mate who was in homeland is gorgeous and fabulous . Love her

Main problem is it isn’t the job of AJLT to try to educate me on pronouns . I don’t want it to . I want it to give me escape and fabulous clothes.

Best after Carrie is Antony .. love him

KillingMeDeftly · 08/07/2023 20:13

SJP seems to be that Hollywood rarity - an actress in her 50s who looks great but hasn't had a ton of work done and actually looks like she's in her 50s. I've always loved her style too - at least she (and by that extension Carrie) is never boring!

Ilikeskinnyjeans · 08/07/2023 20:17

I also feel there is a danger in falsely portraying society as so racially blind
I know it should be , but I have freinds dealing with society’s attitudes towards their mixed race children . It’s very sad ,

I think AJLT is great for showing equality as it should be , however it is not representative of how it is , a danger lies in pretending we don’t have a lot more improvement and change to make .

I go to nyc for work a lot .. it’s is still very much old mayflower money.

tribpot · 08/07/2023 20:35

Poor Anthony doesn't seem to be getting any screentime to talk about the end of his own marriage (he and Stanford have divorced, I assume?), he just has to provide sass for everyone else. I can understand why they might not want to talk badly of Stanford (but then again why write him out that way?).

Ilikeskinnyjeans · 08/07/2023 20:46

Agree
They are giving us a very preachy message about gay rights
Yet zero concern for a gay man whose long term Husband died .
Carrie and big married long after Antony and Stamford

Although it’s really fucking me off i also entirely agree with the sea of misery analogy!

This is a good point!

I'm guessing they had to remove Stanford in some way (RIP Willie Garson) but couldn't have two characters die in Season 1.

Just rewatched the Bobby and Bitsy Hamptons wedding in SATC and it's fabulous.

tribpot · 08/07/2023 21:52

@Ilikeskinnyjeans Stanford isn't dead. It's confusing because Willie Garson has sadly died, but the character has just 'moved to Japan'. And apparently cut Carrie out of his life, she's not doing very well with her BFFs of old.

LeonardCohensRaincoat · 08/07/2023 22:21

I started to watch satc after hearing so much at work about ajlt.

There’s a scene in an early show where Miranda is sleeping with a guy who needs to shower each time they have sex. She then says some really bigoted things about Catholics ( not uptight men, not religiously educated men but just Catholics) She says they should be labelled so we can avoid them.

I cannot imagine any other group being described like this and it being accepted.

And no other Irish descent/Irish in New York but Steve’s alcoholic mother? It really was as awful then as ajlt is now - they weren’t likeable characters at the time- funny as in laughable but not really likeable, I don’t think.

memoriesofamiga · 08/07/2023 23:12

Agreed @LeonardCohensRaincoat , I'm a Catholic and notice it in real life and on TV. The difference is its socially acceptable to say these things about some lifestyles and not with others. It's not a level playing field at all.

I think they implied Stanford has been back in the Met Gala episode - Carrie said the kimono she was wearing (while the Pilot/ Dunelm curtain dress was being finished) was a present her friend Stanny had brought back from Japan. I do agree that his and Anthony’s relationship needs closure, and that Anthony needs a plot worthy of his amazing screen presence. Also, I can’t believe they haven’t dedicated an episode to Willie Garson’s memory. He was an absolute treasure in SATC, never failed to light up an episode.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 08/07/2023 23:20

Has anyone been watching ' The Carrie Diaries?'
It is a prequel to satc . Carrie is 16 and living with her widowed father and sister in conneticut. She's doing an internship in new york.
There is a weird glitch in the matrix when her dad dates the woman who pulled a face at Carrie after she split up with Aidan..

@memoriesofamiga absolutely. I can believe that characters that vacuous would be ignorant about other communities but nothing so explicit is said about anyone else.

Really? In the Carrie at Vogue episode, Carrie says her dad left when she was young, it was just her and her mum. Where are you watching the Carrie Diaries, please?

Highlyflavouredgravy · 08/07/2023 23:34

It's on ITVx.
