Late to this… persevered through it but god, it’s awful. Miranda is sooo annoying. All the woke stuff is just so trite.

I am kind of interested in Carrie’s storyline so will watch to the end but I’m not sure why!

I’m being picky but wouldn’t the wedding dress need a serious steaming to be Met Ball ready, after over a decade in a box?!

I don't think the dress was in that box (far too small), only the bird head-dress packed with lots of tissue. That Vivienne Westwood dress would have been hung up, I imagine, pride of place so that Carrie could look at it and wallow in the "pain" of her non wedding. I'd have thought 15 years of marriage to Big would have "repurposed [her] pain" a long time ago.

Anyway, VW was the Queen of Punk, and the music at the end of the episode and into the titles was from the High Priestess of Punk, Siouxie Sioux (and The Banshees). The same music was used in the Marie Antoinette film, when she was attending a masked (veiled) ball.

Absolutely. It was a shame this wasn’t explored when Carrie was dating last season. That episode with editor Edith hankering after Alexandra Petrovsky (who was the same age as her) was done well & depressingly true. Also I’ve heard from a friend that lived in NYC that single women outnumber single men (don’t know how true that is) so it would be even harder to find a man your age to date.

Yes it was a great episode. The actress was Amazign - and there is nothing Carrie has now that Edith didn’t then.

LifeIsPainHighness · 26/06/2023 23:03

Although the woke-ness and ridiculous taxi hailing story was very tone deaf - I did feel moved when Herbert’s mum said “Your grandfather dodged the brickbats of Selma without even loosening his tie.” I can’t imagine what so many people must have gone through in that generation and I don’t understand how that wonderful line could be in this shitshow of a TV program

LifeIsPainHighness · 26/06/2023 09:48

I agree with the PP who said this show is Cynthia Nixon’s liberal agenda. Singing ‘best me evvvvvvvver’ like an immature 14yo, all because she got an appointment in a fucking flotation tank is so far removed from Miranda Hobbs that I wonder why no one ever pointed out the personality transplant

I watched this back. The first. time round, I was reeling from CN's full frontal to listen to what she was saying when she opened the door of the tank. But actually, it was very much the cynical Miranda of old, exclaiming "fuck the new me" or something similar.

It occurs to me that Nya is the new Miranda, the cerebral, ascerbic, no nonsense lawyer, facing the choice of career v motherhood and partnership with a man she loves, but who is not her equal and with whom she seems to have little in common - very much like Miranda and Steve. Miranda's life choices covers both her possible destinies. Marriage and child, eventual discontentment, lack of fulfilment and boredom; or holding out for "the one" and being the "best me ever".

GellerYeller · 26/06/2023 23:53

@Ridemeginger loved the Siouxsie at the end, and didn’t make the connection with VW, that’s lovely to know. I was convinced the dress would be boxed and creased to buggery. Gorgeous though- lovely to see it again.

My god was it clumsy. I can’t be the only one to remember there were scenes for all of them across the seasons of SATC when a hailed cab didn’t stop, it was a somewhat endearing reference to daily life in NYC (also, cabs not stopping features in most films about NYC, especially when people need one to urgently get to the airport type scenes🤣).
There was a nod to the cab not stopping because he had kids with him, he asked them to go inside. I wonder if that’s a reason sometimes cabs don’t stop and they wanted to show that too?

In the previous episode their building was clearly shown to have two doormen on duty at one time. One of the doormen would have hailed a cab not Herbert. It's also a fact that well over 90% of NYC cab drivers are first generation immigrants, the vast majority coming from the West Indies and South Asia. So whatever they were trying to say about racism in this episode was, in reality, more racist than the message they were intending to convey. And lastly, Chris Jackson, the actor playing Herbert, is a mixed race man who would not immediately be viewed as black, especially to the average NYC cabbie. Most drivers would look at him and see a wealthy man with light skin standing outside a building resided in by wealthy people. A man who is far more likely to give an excellent tip than pose any sort of issue that would make them avoid taking his fare.

I also don't know why Miranda was cleaning seaweed off the beach. That actually seems like it would be bad for the biodiversity on the beach and the environmental equivalent of an over manicured lawn????? As in it makes the beach appear more pleasant to humans but removes food sources for wildlife? And why the hell didn't she ask one of the other people on the clean up team to call her phone so she could hopefully hear it?

I really do agree that the taxi-hailing scene seems unlikely - possibly they've put themselves in a narrative corner where they're trying to depict things that really do happen (some cab drivers refusing to stop for people of colour) but with characters that are too rich/privileged/light skinned for it to ring true? It would have made a lot more sense to find a better example of everyday racism that would logically extend to a rich guy like Mr LTW (no idea what his name is).

I live coastally and clearing beaches of certain types of seaweed is done because it's invasive and bad for biodiversity. But you'd usually see a lot of coverage - Miranda just appeared to be picking up a bunch of wrack weed!

born2runaway · 27/06/2023 13:31

Why the dig into Bethenny Frankel?

Why is such a woke/inclusive/pc show having digs at real life women !

What she done to piss SJP off?

thebellagio · 27/06/2023 13:51

@born2runaway what did they say about Bethenny Frankel?

BriarHare · 27/06/2023 13:53

I’m enjoying the hate watching.

Charlotte could not have looked more hideous in her Met gala outfit.

Miranda and the strap ons and the oral sex was almost unwatchable.

The hailing a cab scene in what looked like Park Avenue was SO implausible.

Lily’s angsty song was hilarious.

I guess if the beach was covered in sargassum, the clean up would’ve made sense. But it just looked a bit off.

And, really. Would Carrie move back to her shitty little Brownstone apartment when she’d moved up in the world?

Anyway, when’s the next episode? 😂

born2runaway · 27/06/2023 13:53

Surely black poor people of NY would be offended by that ridiculous cab story

What cabbie is going to refuse to pick up a rich business man outside his luxury apartment on park ave because he's black? And he was ignored by mulitple cabs

Unlikely

QueefofSheena · 27/06/2023 19:01

I’m not finding Carrie as irritating as Miranda, Che and Charlotte. KD looks like Jack Nicholson’s Joker with the work she’s had done, and it’s affected her speech in some way. I hope Nya has a thing with Gary Dourdan’s character, he’s a bit gorgeous

LifeIsPainHighness · 27/06/2023 19:04

Yes when Carrie is the least annoying it’s saying something 😂😄

Kristin Davies has overfilled her lips to the point she can’t speak properly. I was surprised it didn’t come up in last season’s Botox episode

Barold · 27/06/2023 20:35

But do you really think KD would be better without the fillers? I feel like she’s lost the ability to actually act.

I put on SATC the other night and she was really good!

I also put on AJLT to go to sleep last night (I listen to things I’ve already watched) and Carrie’s nonsense about the egg poaching gave me the absolute rage! She’s so unlikeable at times.

I will be disappointed (and surprised) if Gary doesn’t make a reappearance.

In Sex and the City, Enid (Carrie's editor at Vogue) said: 'stop expecting it to look like what you thought it was going to look like.'

Admittedly, she said this with regards to having it all and relationships, but the sentiment can be applied to so many things. Am not ashamed to say I have quote Enid many times over the past twenty years.

And Just Like That isn't Sex & the City, nor is it trying to be. And without Samantha and Kim Cattrall's involvement, nor the original writing team and costume designer(s), it can't be anyway. AJLT is a whole different thing, hence the lack of Carrie narration and final voiceover of each episode starting 'and just like that...'

I realise I'm in the minority, but I'm enjoying it for what it is. But maybe that's because I wasn't expecting Sex and the City 2.0

Totally agree with this. I really dont want it to be cancelled. Its a separate show and its no worse than any other frothy American show ive enjoyed like Gossip Girl or Flight Attendant. I cant get worked up about it. SJP looks amazing Im starting to wonder if shes a smoker as thats what her voice reminds me of. Shes also perfect as Carrie. Its Miranda that I have problems with and I would even if I didnt know the Miranda before.

Lentilweaver · 28/06/2023 00:06

I think SJP looks rather haggard actually. The scraped back bun doesn't help. I agree she is the least irritating, though that is not saying much.

Why is there so much pointless nudity? We all know Cynthia is trying to recapture her lost youth, but even Kristin had to go topless.

Sometimes I want to reach through the TV and slap Che. Which is a pity because I liked the actress-forget her name- so much in Grey's Anatomy.

Just rewatched that episode and it's brilliantly done. And actually quite shocking when poor Lexie went out of the window.

Enjoying this thread very much, ladies. Certainly more than the new series 😁

Sisternyc · 28/06/2023 01:09

Ok so cabs don’t stop for most people in NYC these days and on Park Avenue, the doormen hail them for you and the awnings have little taxi signs that light up on top.

Cynthia Nixon has ruined Miranda, she no longer exists and she’s just playing herself it seems.

I actually think SJP has been living in New York bubble too long and has made the series too niche - the met ‘ball’ and the Real Real etc. The OG SATC was much more relatable as even though they clearly all had lots of money and free time, their problems felt real).

I recommend the Every Outfit (On Sex and the City) podcast. Free every Friday and extra eps available behind a paywall. Been listening since it started. I love those girls and have proudly been a Fuckette since day dot. Any serious fans of SATC/AJLT will love it Blush

The franchise seems supportive of this podcast but I wondered if Carrie refusing to do that ad was a dig as a lot of their ads are along the same lines!

Great podcast! So glad they finally addressed the ‘English’ journalist in the pilot actually being Australian. Has bugged me for years!

QueefofSheena · 28/06/2023 01:50

I don’t think Carrie living in her old apartment after years of luxury is very realistic. I get that it’s supposed to be a comfort but she used it for writing anyway. She also didn’t need to do a shitty podcast, she’s rich and still writes.

born2runaway · 28/06/2023 07:44

Can somebody explain why carrie not doing the ad resulted in the whole production company closing down?

Was she their only client?

Barold · 28/06/2023 08:58

I mean, they always had their boobs out in SATC. Why isn’t it ok now that they’re older? 🤷🏼‍♀️
