According to Jesse's interviews on so dramatic, Clare was set up by the producers. She was a good friend of the main producer, and that's why she got so much airtime and that's why she was there in the beginning anyway. Apparently when they weren't on air she didn't really have anything to do with Jesse. The interviews are very interesting.

I haven't read/watched any of the aftershow interviews but the impression I'm getting is Jesse has reverted back to type, and is the nitpicking negative Nancy he was during the honeymoon
