An unmarried, middle-aged editor named Susan Ryeland receives from her superior the handwritten manuscript of the latest projected novel of the best-selling writer Alan Conway, but notices that the final chapter is missing.

Shortly afterwards, she learns that Alan Conway has died in an apparent suicide by falling off the tower of his mansion.

A suicide note in Conway's own handwriting is delivered to her office.

However, she has nagging doubts about the reality of the events, and decides to investigate Conway's death in order to know the truth, and to find where the last chapter of the manuscript went.

Thanks for this. I always pop over if a new thread appears in active to see what new programmes are coming soon, then I record, forget about it for a month then bingewatch 😂

I appreciate your posts Smile

How exciting! I bought a britbox subscription just to watch it.

I’m going to enjoy re-watching and awaiting season two!

Ah haa.
https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/magpie-murders-season-2-bbc-newsupdate/

The BBC has announced the acquisition of the mystery series Magpie Murders – and revealed that it will be airing a follow-up season next year.
The first season, which previously aired on BritBox, was adapted by Anthony Horowitz from his own novel of the same name and starred Lesley Manville as editor turned sleuth Susan Ryeland and Timothy McMullan as fictional detective Atticus Pünd.
Both stars will reprise their roles in a sequel series titled Moonflower Murders, which will commence filming later in 2023 before airing next year.
"I’m very happy that Magpie Murders is going to be shown on the BBC – its natural home," Horowitz said of the news. "I had such fun writing the scripts and they’ve been brought to life by a brilliant director and cast.”

Well done @martinisforeveryone

We saw it on Britbox and it is very good .

Meceme · 27/03/2023 19:01

Haven't seen the show but read the book. Should be great if it sticks to the text. Lesley Manville a great choice, fits my idea of Susan and is a great actress.

@Meceme seems they usually don't when From a book

You will have to tell us at the end

Thanks for this @Blondeshavemorefun my sister loved it so I'm looking forward to it 😊

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 28/03/2023 07:40

Did Anthony Horowitz write the screenplay? It would sense for him to do so as he started his writing career in TV (Foyle"s War,).

If he has written both book and screenplay it should stay pretty faithful to the original.

Thanks @Blondeshavemorefun , looking forward to this , the posters who have seen it like it 👌

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/03/2023 20:26

Fantastic news. I love the books and subscribed to Britbox briefly in order to watch the series when it was first released. Lesley Manville is great in this series and wears some fantastic clothes! Definitely worth watching if you haven't already.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/04/2023 21:19

Bump

Been a manic day so will watch tomorrow

Just watched the first 2 episodes. Really good. Anthony Horowitz wrote the book and screen play and his wife is the executive producer. Might as well keep it in the family

TonTonMacoute · 01/04/2023 22:05

Good? Good?

Just watched it and thought it was the biggest pile of insultingly, patronising crap I've seen for a very long time.

Fucking rubbish, great cast. What on earth were they thinking?

purpledalmation · 01/04/2023 22:08

I'm reading the book at the moment so can't watch it until I've finished, but I am recording it so maybe I can watch and read in tandem 😂

daffodilandtulip · 01/04/2023 22:08

Really not sure what I think. It was easy to watch and a bit feel good with how pleasant everyone was, but I don't think I knew what was going on.

sashagabadon · 01/04/2023 22:24

I enjoyed it. Loved Susan’s clothes, her shirts were gorgeous and the cardigan too. Wonder what shop they came from?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 01/04/2023 22:42

i enjoyed that
i like lesley manville

Winniewonka · 01/04/2023 22:43

I've read both books and I thoroughly enjoyed it. 45 minutes just flew by!

SoupDragon · 01/04/2023 22:48

I enjoyed it - just what I need from a Saturday night programme. Nothing too deep, just intriguing.

(as an aside, there's no need to @ me as I have opted out of notifications 😂😂)

bizzey · 01/04/2023 23:11

Thanks for the thread.
I have watched it but not feeling the urge to binge watch it yet !

It was confusing me about the double casting.

Is it significant? Wondering whether to re - watch when I am not so tired 🤔🤔

Double casting mostly signifies that Conway put someone from his life as a character in the book. But I'm not sure about the double casting of Daniel Mays as the two cops - I think they're just doing that for the hell of it.

I read the book last year but can't remember much of the detail: only who did the real-world murder and why. DH coincidentally finished reading it last week so is trying not to "spoil" it for me.

bizzey · 01/04/2023 23:40

Thank you.

longtompot · 01/04/2023 23:46

We really enjoyed it. Not read the books but have read previous ones by him. I loved that it was an intriguing story and wanted to know more. I liked the same actors used in the story as well as the real life. I really liked the relationship between Lesley's character and her partner. Looking forward to next weeks
