Shortly afterwards, she learns that Alan Conway has died in an apparent suicide by falling off the tower of his mansion.

A suicide note in Conway's own handwriting is delivered to her office.

However, she has nagging doubts about the reality of the events, and decides to investigate Conway's death in order to know the truth, and to find where the last chapter of the manuscript went.

Thanks @Blondeshavemorefun I've looked at the cast, Lesley Manville is Susan. I like her.

Confusingly it seems to have debuted on another platform in February last year. The first review says

'The best mystery drama , based on the wonderfully written novel by Anthony Horowitz. It has a stellar cast, there are no small parts, everyone is interesting and absolutely real. It touches different aspects of life and human nature. The show is very intelligent and gentle.'

daffodilandtulip · 27/03/2023 14:14

A murder programme on a Saturday evening, what now? Also, where's Casualty then 👀

ScrambledSmegs · 27/03/2023 14:24

Ooh, I know you didn't tag me but I've read the book (and sequel, think there will be a 3rd) the series is adapted from and I really like them. This series had good reviews when it came out on Britbox, but I wasn't going to subscribe just for one show.

Glad to get a chance to watch it now, I like the character of Susan Ryeland and think Lesley Manville is a great choice to play her.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/03/2023 14:53

Anyone welcome @ScrambledSmegs

People just ask me to tag them in stuff I watch /look good

Dinopawus · 27/03/2023 15:41

Was having a deja vue there for a minute. Then had a google and realised it was series twoGrin

Should be good!

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/03/2023 16:53

Series 1 is available on subscription. Six episodes of 44 minutes. It's on ITVX Premium or Amazon Prime Video Britbox, which offers a week's free trial if anyone has time to catch up via that. I've never taken a free trial as I know I'd forget to cancel.

JoanThursday1972 · 27/03/2023 17:43

Is this any good, or is it a quaint/whimsy show like Midsomer Murders or Heartbeat?

LadyEloise1 · 27/03/2023 18:01

Thank you for including me @Blondeshavemorefun.
BBC1✅
Series 2 🙁

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/03/2023 18:05

I have no idea @JoanThursday1972

Never seen it

Def says s1

Maybe it's been on other channels so people have seen it before?

It was on BritBox about a year ago, I enjoyed it, there was a thread at the time and most people liked it.

I don't think that there is a series 2 yet?

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/03/2023 18:46

I don't have britbox

Sounds like this is s1 so a repeat for some but not for me

OP posts:
RedRiverShore3 · 27/03/2023 18:52

I don't think many did have BritBox so it will be new to most, I only got it as it was free with BT internet for 6 months, it's definitely series one as there doesn't seem to be a series two at all.

Meceme · 27/03/2023 19:01

Haven't seen the show but read the book. Should be great if it sticks to the text. Lesley Manville a great choice, fits my idea of Susan and is a great actress.

Dinopawus · 27/03/2023 20:43

That's so weird! I've definitely seen it - and with the cast members mentioned. Maybe it was Britbox & I've forgotten ???

Oh well, worth watching again.

yellowhedges · 27/03/2023 20:58

Thanks, as always, @Blondeshavemorefun

The BBC has announced the acquisition of the mystery series Magpie Murders – and revealed that it will be airing a follow-up season next year.
The first season, which previously aired on BritBox, was adapted by Anthony Horowitz from his own novel of the same name and starred Lesley Manville as editor turned sleuth Susan Ryeland and Timothy McMullan as fictional detective Atticus Pünd.
Both stars will reprise their roles in a sequel series titled Moonflower Murders, which will commence filming later in 2023 before airing next year.
"I’m very happy that Magpie Murders is going to be shown on the BBC – its natural home," Horowitz said of the news. "I had such fun writing the scripts and they’ve been brought to life by a brilliant director and cast.”

I've read the book, was very good

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 27/03/2023 21:18

This has made a rubbish day a little bit better. I enjoyed the books and Antony Horowitz is an experienced tv writer so finger crossed it is an enjoyable series.

shouldisay · 27/03/2023 21:31

Oooo it's fab. I watched it on BritBox and really enjoyed it. Had read the book first and then got overly excited when I saw it adapted for tv. I did wonder how it well it would translate to tv but it's been done brilliantly. Enjoy!!!
